EOLDABLE CONTAINER.
Application filed July 25, 1924. Serial No. 728,158.
The present invention relates to containers formed by folding and'suitable for the reception of articles at the time of the sale thereof or for use by shoppers as shopping bags, and one object of the inventionv is to provide a container vformed by folding1 having a top or closing flap and a tongue on the closing flap which is adapted to be bent downwardly and passed through registering transverse slots in the front and rear sheets or sides of the' container and hence carried upwardly rearwardly of the` rear sheet and extending thereabove for providing means for grasping the container for transportation and acting as a binding means on the closing flap for holding it in closed position, the weight of the articles in the container exerting a strain on the fiap and conducing to the binding effect.
Another object is to provide a container of the character described in which a portion of the front sheet is overlapped longitudinally of the sheet for reinforcing the front sheet in the longitudinal mid portion thereof and providing a front sheet a portion of which is of double material through which registering transverse slots are cut for engagement therewith of the tongue of the container for the purpose above mentioned.
Another object is to provide a container of the character described having a ltongue functioning as above stated and which is provided with a base portion for strengthening the closing fiap of the container.
Another object is to provide a container of the character described having a tongue provided with a base portion for strengthening the closing flap and which has an extension of the base portionfor reinforcing the rear sheet of the container and providing with the rear sheet double material through which registering transverse slots are cut for engagement of the tongue therewith for the purpose above described.

in the subjoined specification and shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is afront view of one form of the container.
Fig. 2 is a front view of a container having a body portion or receptacle portion similar to that shown in Fig. 1, and
having a tongue provided with a base portion for strengthening the closing flap of the container.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 5 the container which is made of any suitable bendable material such as leather, fibre or paper comprises the front sheet 10 and lthe rear sheet 11 of similar shape and size and formed from a single sheet of the material by transversely folding the sheet on its middle line. the line of fold forming the bottom of container. The rear sheet 11 is provided at its top with the closing flap 12 defined from the rear sheet by the transverse scoring 13 and in length is the width of the rear sheet and in width is suiiicient when folded on the scoring 18 to overlap the front sheet 10 substantially for the width of the Hap. The iap 12 is provided on its free side or edge with the tongue 14 in this instance integral with the flap. The tongue 14 is provided with the circular opening 15 for insert-ion thereinY of a finger Aof the user of the container for carrying purposes, the tongue 14 being defined from the flap 12 by the scoring 16. Referring' to Figs. 2 and 6, the body or receptacle portion of the container is the same as shown in Fig. l., but the tongue is composed of matching parts 23 and 28 which provide a tongue of double material, one of these parts beine; formed on the flap l2 and the outer being foldahly connected at one end to the first part and haring at its opposite endy an extended iportion 2l. which when the parts 23 and 23 are hroueght together and adhesively or otherwise suitably secured provides an extended base of sinn'le material for' the tongue which is adhesively or otherwise suitably secured to the flap l2 for strengtheninev the vflap. Referring to Figs. 3 and 7, the container formed of a rectangular sheet of material of greater width than length folded at its sides to provide a rear sheet 26 Fig. 7 of sing e mate 'ial and a front sheet 27 of the saine shape and dimensions as the rear sheet and having' a longitudinally extended iniil portion 2F, of double material formed by overlap folder which the rear sheet 26 is formed. as shown in l? 3 by the broken lines 29 and the full lines Si), the overlapping portions heine' adhesively or otherwise suitably secured together and havinfa)I registering' transverse slots each 31H31 cut through the niid por` tion the mid portion in width being; sullicient to extend for a distance on either side of the slots for providing strengthening' portion adjacent to the slots. rlhe rear sheet '2G has at its lower edeje the flap 32 which is foldable over the mid portion and the adjacent portion of the frontsheet, and is adhesively or otherwise suitably secured thereto for 'fastening together the front and rear sheets at their lower ends. The rear sheet 26 is provided at its top with the fold able flap similar to the Hap l2. The rear sheet has cut therein a transverse slot 34. not conveniently shown in Figi. B. hut seen 7 which registers with the slot 3l in the mid portion of the front sheet the arrangement of these slots when the sheets are in operable relation. as to the distance thereof from the scoring' 35 of the flap being' the saine as stated relative to the slots of the form of container shown in Fig. l.
The container shown in Figs and 7 has a tongue of double material formed of matching' parts of single material one of said parts having` a base portion 36 of single material formed similarly to the base portion of the container shown in Figs. 2 and 6. rlhe base portion 36 however is extended to provide a reinforcing strip 3? ot single material having a transverse slot 38 therein. The reinforcing' strip S7 is so adapted that when the matching' parts of the tongue are secured together. the base portion 36 may be carried over and secured tothe flap 33 for strengthening' the flap and the reinforcing' strip 37 may be carried over and secured to the rear sheet 26, the slots 34 of the rea sheet and 38 of the reinforcing strip registering' and the double material thus provided by the rear sheet and reinforcing` strip serving` to strengthen these slots for sustaining the strain and wear of the engagement of the tongue therein, while the double material provided by the mid portion 28 of the 'front sheet strengthens the slots 3l thereof for the same purpose@ The hlank Fin'. 5, for forming' the oontainer shown in Fig'. l. has a main portion of oblong shape comprising' the front sheet section l0 and the rear sheet section l1 deiined therefrom by the transverse scoring' 39. The rear sheet section il has on its sides the attaching wins` sections 1'? and 18 defined from the rear sheet section by the portions of the sheetfroni parallel scorings 19 and 20 and has on its upper side or edge the flap section 12 defined therefrom by the transverse scoring 13. rlheV verse. slot 22, so arranged that when the` sheets are in folded relation these slots will register.
The blank Fig. 6,for forming the con-v tainer shown in Fig. 2, in its main portion attaching wing sections `and flap section is similar to the blanlr'last described, but the flap section V12 has thereon a tongue composed of matching parts 23 and 23 defined from each otherbyv the transverse scoring 40, each matching part having therein a circular opening 25 and .25',which openings register when the parts are in matching relation, and the matching part 23 is extended to provide the base portion 24.
The blank Fig. 7, forl forming the container shown in Fig. 3, has a mainor body portion of oblong shape comprising the rear sheet section 26 and the side fold front sheet sections 41 and 42, defined from the rear sheet section by the parallel longitudinal scorings 43 and 44, the side fold sections having near their tops adjacent to their outer edges the transverse slots 31 and 31', and the rear sheet section having in its middle longitudinal line near its top the transverse slot l34, the slots 31, 31"`and 34 registering when the rear sheet section and side fold front sheet sections are in folded relation. The rear sheet section 26 has at its bottomthe flap section 32 defined therefrom by the transverse scoring 45 and has at its top the flap section 33 defined therefrom by the transverse scoring 35. The flap sectionr-33 has thereon a tongue composed of the match,- ing parts 46 and 46 defined from each other by the transverse scoring 47, each matching part having therein av circular opening 48-48 which openings register when the parts are in matching relation. Thermatching part 46 is extended to provide.V the base portion 36 which in turn is extended to provide the reinforcing strip 37 having a traverse slot 38 therein which registers with the slot 34 of the rear sheet section 26 when the reinforcing strip `and rear .sheet section are secured together infolded operative relation.
vIt is within the purview of the invention that -the blank portions for forming the tongues and parts cooperating therewith shown in Figs. 6 and 7 can be made separate from the' main blank portions and that the tongues can be adhesively or otherwise suitably secured to t-he top flap section of the rear sheet section to form-the container. should be understood that there may be modifications thereof and variations therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
lWhat I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a foldably formed container, sheets secured together to form the front and back of the receptacle portion of the container, a fiap on the back sheet foldably engageable over the front sheet for closing the container, each Vof said sheets having a slot therein adjacent to said flap and said slots registering wth each other when the sheets are in assembled relation, and foldably connected matching tongue parts of single material on the free end edge of the flap and extending transversely to said edge and when folded on their connection forming a tongue of double material` adapted to be passed, when the flap is in closing position, through said slots from one side of the container to the other side thereof and carried upwardly above the top edge of the container for holding said flap in closing position, saidinatching parts each having an aperture therein and these apertures registering and providing a finger hold of double material when the matching parts are in folded form and in position for holding the Hap closed.
2. In a foldably formed container, a front sheet having a transverse slot therein, a rear sheet having a transverse slot therein, flap on the rear sheet foldably engageable over the front sheet for. closing the container, and a tongue on the free end edge of said flap and composed of foldably connected matching tongue parts, said slots each being spaced away in the front and rear sheets fromthe line of fold of the flap by distance equal to the width of thexiiap and registering when the sheets are in assembled relation, and said matching tongue parts when the flap is in closing position being adapted in length tol be passed through the registering slots from the front to the rear. of the sheets and thence carried upwardly eXteriorly rof the container to a point above the top edge of the closed container for holding the iiap in closing'posr tion and for transporting the container.
3. In a container formed by folding, front and rear sheets, a flap on an end of the rear sheet and engagealolev over the front sheet for closing the container, and a member consisting of a tongue portion appurtenant to the free end edge of theflap and of double material formed lby matching parts of singleinateriah said member having a base extension of single material for reinforcing the flap, said tongue portion when the flap is in closing'position being engageable with registering transverse slots el O in thesheets and passing inwardly through said slots fromone side of the container to the otherv side thereof and outwardly from said other side and upwardly exteriorly of the container to a point above the t-op edge of the container for holding the flap in closing position and constituting a handle for the container.
4. In a container, sheets. foldable to provide the front and rear sides of the container and provided with slots registering with each other when the sheets are folded, a flap on the end edge of one of the sheets and foldable for closing the container, and
Y a foldable member on the free end edge of the flap and consisting of a tongue portion of double material formed by matching parts of single material, one of said parts having thereon a base portion having an extension provided with a slot, said base portion when the sheets are folded being secured to the flap and said extension secured to the rear side of the container, the slot of said extension then registering with the slots of the folded sheets.
5. In a container formed by folding, front and rear sheets, a flap on an end of the rea-r'sheety and engageable over the front sheet for closing the container, and a member consisting of a tongue portion appurtenant to the free end edge ofthe flap and of double material formed by matching parts of single material, saidr member having a base extension of single material with w a transverse slot therein, said tongue portion when the flap is in closing position being engageable with registering transverse slots in the sheets and engageable with the slot of said extension registering with said slots and passing inwardly through the slots of the sheets and base extension from one side of the container to the other side thereof and outwardly from said other side and upwardly eXteriorly of the container for holding the iiap in closing position and constituting a handle for the container.
6. In a container formed by folding, front and rear sheets, a iap on an end of the rear sheet and engageable over the front sheet for closing the container, and a member consisting of a tongue portion appurtenant to the free end edge of the flap and of double material Jformed by matching parts of single material, said memberhaving a base eXtension of single material with a transverse slot therein, said tongue portion when the flap is in closing position being engageable with registering transverse slots in theV sheets and engageable with the slot of said extension registering with said slots and passing inwardly through the slots of the sheets and base extension from one side',A of the container to the other side thereof and outwardly from said other side and upwardly exteriorly of the container to a point above the top edge of the container for holding` the flap in closing position and constituting a handle for the container, said slots being spaced away on the sheets from the top edges of the sheets and said slot of the base extensionbeing spaced away from the free end edge of the extension by a distance equal to the width of the Hap.y
7. In a container formed by folding', comprising a rear sheet of single material and a front sheet having a longitudinal portion of double material formed by overlapping portions of the sheet, the rear sheet having a transverse slot therein and the front sheet having registering transverse slots in said longitudinal portion, the slots of the respective sheets registering with each other when the sheets are in assembled relation, a flap on the rear sheet foldably engageable over the front sheet for closing the container, a tongue of double material formed by matching parts of single materialand extending outwardly from the free endv edge of said flap, a base extension of single material on one of said matching parts, and a reinforcing strip of single material on said base extension having a transverse slot therein, said base extension providing whenthe matching parts of the tongue are in assembled relation reinforcement for said Hap, and said reinforcing strip providing double material for the rear sheet around and adjacent to the transverse slot thereof and the transverse slot of said strip then registering with the slot of the rear sheet.
8. In a fol'dably formed container having front and rear sides and an open end, a iap for closing said end, a tongue on the free end edge of said flap and composed of foldably connected matching tongue parts, and registering tongue-receiving slots in said front and rear sides whereby tol lock said flap in closing positionby passing the foldably connected ends of the tongue parts when the parts are' in matching relation through said slots from one side of the container tothe other side thereof and carryingl upwardly exteriorly of the container the foldably connected ends ofthe matching tongue parts for providing a handle for the container. l i

A blank for forming a container by folding theA blank on'V scorings thereon, the blank having an oblong main portion comprising a rear sheet section and side' fold sections for forming a front sheet section defined from the rear sheet section' by parallel longitudinal scorings,the rearrsheetsection having" a transverse slot nearrits upper end and lthe side fold sections each having a transverse slot near'its"v upp'er'end and near itsV free edges, 'the slots ofthe rear sheet section andthe slots of the side fold sections registering when the rear sheet and side fold sections arev in assembled relation, a flap section on the lower end of the rear sheet section defined therefrom by'. a transverse scoring, a iiap section on the upper end of the rear sheet dened therefrom by a transverse scoring, matching tongue parts one of which is connected to the last mentioned flap section and dened therefrom by a transverse scoring and the other of which is connected to v'the first part in end to end relation therewith and defined therefrom by a transverse scoring and has on its opposite end a base extension for reinforcing the last mentioned flap section, and a reinforcing strip for the rear sheet section connected to the base eXtension and having a transverse slot therein registering with the transverse slot of the rear sheet section when said strip is in reinforcing position.
10. In a container, sheets folda-ble to provide the front and rear sides of the Container andV provided with transverse slots registering with each other when the sheets are folded, a ap on the end edge of one of the sheets and foldable for closing the container, said-transverse slots being spaced away from the adjacent end edges of the sheets by a distance substantially equal to the width of the flap, and a foldable member on the free end edge of the flap and consisting of a tongue portion of double material formed by matching parts of single material, one of said parts having thereon a base portion having an extension provided with a transverse slot spaced away from the adjacent end edge of the extension by a distance substantially equal to the width of said flap, said base portion when the sheets are folded being secured to the iiap and said extension secured to the rear side of the container, the slot of said extension then registering with the slots of the folded sheets.
