Description

1. c. onus.
Sulky-Plows.
Patented Feb-9,1875.
No. l59,642. v
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIOE.
JAMES C. GARNS, OF MILLBROOK, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SULKV-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,64 2, dated February 9, 1875; application filed January 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. (Arms, of Millbrook, Kendall county, State of Illinois,
, have-invented certain Improvements in Sulkyunder the arch of the axle to the back part of the frame. To the back and under side of this beam is fastened, by bolts or otherwise, the plow. To the front part of the beam are fastened two standards, connected at the top by a bolt, serving as a fulcrum for a lever, the outer end of which is pix'oted to a pole extending in front between the horses, and backward between the two standards to at or near the arch of the axle, where it is pivoted to the plow-beam.
By aid of this lever, which is operated by the occupant of the seat, and regulated by a spring-catch and perforated guide, the pole is heightened or lowered at will.
To the upper part of the frame, over the plow, are fastened two standards, between the tops of which is fastened an eccentric lever, also operated by the occupant of the seat, and serving to raise and lower the beam and the plow. This action is produced by aid of a chain, one end of which is fastened to the end of the beam, and the other end to the upper part of the eccentric. A catch placed on the side of the back end of the pole serves to hold the lever stationary downward, when the plow is raised out of the ground. To the lower part and center of the axle, under the arch, are fastened two arms serving as guides for the plow-beam. Between these two arms, and fastened to the beam, is placed an eyebolt, to which is hooked a rod extending in front of the frame, and serving as a carrier for the whiffletree. This rod is regulated up and down, as well as sidewise, at the will of the operator, by aid of a slotted support fastened to the under side and front of the plowbeam.
In order to regulate the height of the wheel to the left of the operator, I attach to the end of the axle a slotted standard, into the slot of which is placed a slide, to which the part of the axle on which the wheel rotates is fastened. This slide can be heightened and lowered at will by the aid of a lever placed parallel to and inside of the wheel, and is held in position by aid of a set-screw.
In order to more fully describe my invention, I refer to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a plan view of a sulky-plow embodying my invention.v Fig. II is a side view of the same.
A is the frame; B, the axle; 0, the arch; l3
and D, the wheels; E, the seat; F, the plow- I beam; G, the plow; h h, standards; 7 the bolt between the standards; J, the lever, for heightening or lowering the pole K, pivoted to the boltt' and to pole K at l,- m, the springcatch on the end of the lever J; n, the perforated guide for the catch m; 0 O, the two standards, fastened to the rear of the frame A; 10, the bolt on the top of the same, serving as a fulcrum for the eccentric lever Q; r, the chain, fastened at s to the eccentric lever, and at t to the plow-beam; U U, the two arms, serving as guides for the plow-beam; v, the eyebolt, fastened to the plow-beam; w, the rod; X, the slotted support for regulating the rod 20, to the end of which, at a, the horses are attached; I), the slotted support for holding the slide 0, to which the part of the axle d is fastened; e, the set-screw; and f, the lever for heightening or lowering the wheel D.
Having thus described my invention, I .desire to claim The combination, with the frame A, arched axle B, plow-beam F, and pole K, constructed as described, of the lever J, catch an, perforated guide at, and lever Q, all constructed and operating as shown and described.
JAMES C. OARNS.
