BENCH:V VISE.

Application filed February 2'0, 1926. Serial No. 89,730.

This invention relates to bench vises and particularly to vises mounted upon the bench and designed to be of particular value in slph work as planing doors, sashes and the li e. y A further object of is to provide a device of this character in which all permanent members of the vise are flush with the top of the bench so as to form no obstruction'to the ordinary use of the bench.

Another object is to provide a vise of this character comprising one element adapted to be applied to the edge of the bench and having a plurality of Vsockets and another screw shifted element adjustable toward or from the first named element and having a single socket, and provide work engaging jaws having shanks insertible in said sockets, these jaws being removable from the two elements when desired.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

Referring to these drawings and particularly to'Figures 1, 2 and 4, it will be seen that one element of my vise comprises a metallic strip or other strip designated 10, .having any desired length and adapted to be held against the edge face of the top of a carpenters bench, designated B, by means of screws 11 having their heads disposed in countersinks in the strip 10. The inner face of the strip 10 is formed with recesses or sockets 12 which open onto the inner face of the strip 10 and, therefore, the edge of the table or bench B constitutes the fourth wall of each socket.

The other elementof my vise comprises a head nut 13 which is held against one end face of thebench by means of the screw 14 and by means of the U-shaped strap 15 which is bolted to the bench and may be countersunk therein, this strap embracing the head nut and being bolted thereto, as illustrated in Figure 7. The head nut is screw' threaded for thescrew 16 having a handle 17 at one end, the opposite end having swiveled engagement with a head 18. This head is formedA with a socketA 19 extending entirely through the head. The inner face of this head 18 is formed with arib 20, T- shaped in cross section to4 engageiin the guide recess 21 formed in onefface of the member 15. v L y v Operating in the sockets 12 and in the socket 19V are thel jaw carrying 'posts 01' shanksv 22,l each formed at its upper end with an enlargement constituting a jaw and designated 23, v Ythis enlargement being ro'ughened, knurled' or otherwise formed upon one face asshown inFigures 8 and 9.V The lower end of each post is formed with an inclined'face 24 and riveted to this inclined face isa yspring 25 which, when the post is inserted within a socket, acts to cause a binding action which will hold the post within the socket. I

The use of this device will be obvious from what has gone before. One of the posts may be inserted in any oneA of the sockets 12 and disposed'nearer to or further from the movable Vhead 18 as desired. One of the posts 22 is also to be disposed in the socket in the head 18. Then the article to be clamped is disposed upon the bench in a position to be engaged between the two'jaws formed by the post and then the screw 16 is turned to shift the head 18 toward'the member 10 until the article is clamped firmly upon the bench.` i `f This device may be applied to any eX- isting work bench and necessitates but very little cutting of the bench or change therein as it is to be applied on the eXtreme left hand ofthe bench. It is particularly simple and it is very readily handled. It has been found to be particularly effective for such work as planing doors, sashes and the like. 2. The combination with a carpenters bench, of a vise comprising a strip attached l' to one edge of the bench and extending longitudinally therealong flush with the upper face thereof and having a plurality of sockets extending vertically through the 'strip and at spaced distances, a head nut mounted upon the bench at right angles to said strip, a member engaging the head nut with the bench, the member having a longitudinally extending groove upon the face oil said member parallel to the strip, a screw passing' through the head nut and having a handle at one end and a head swiveled to the other end of the screw and having a vertically extending socket, the head having' a rib slidingly engaging said groove inv said head nut supporting member, and aw supporting posts insertible into any one of said sockets.

3. The combination with a carpenters bench, o't' a vise comprising a member attached to one edge of the bench and having a plurality of vertical sockets extending entirely through said member, a head nut disposed against one end of the bench and having a screw threaded opening, a clamping member for the head nut embracing the same and extending longitudinally along one edge of the bench and embracing the edge ot the bench, said member having upon one face a slot which is T-shaped in cross section, a screw passing through the opening of the head nut and having a handle .at one end and a head swiveled to the other end of the screw and having a T-shaped groove engageable in said recess, the head having a socket extending vertically therethrough, and a plurality of jaw carrying posts engageable in said sockets.

The combination with a carpenters bench, of a vise comprising a member attached to one edge of the bench and having a plurality of vertical sockets extending entirely through said member, a head nut disposed against one end of the bench and having a screw threaded opening, a clamping member for the head nut embracing the same and extending longitudinally along one edge oi' the bench and embracing the edge of the bench, said member having upon one face a slot which is T-shaped in cross section, a screw passing through the opening of the head nut and having a handle at one end and a head swiveled to the other end of the screw and having a T-shaped groove engageable in said recess, the head having a socket extending vertically therethrough, and a plurality of jaw carrying posts engageable in said sockets, each of said posts comprising a. head constituting a jaw proper and a shank, and means for frictionally engaging the shank with the wall of a socket, each socket at its upper end being enlarged to receive the head of a post.

5. A bench clamp comprising a strip hav` ing vertical sockets extending therethrough on its inner face and having meansr whereby it may be attached to the edge of a carpenters bench, a head nut having a screw threaded opening, a clamp therefor U- shaped in vertical section to embrace said head and embrace the edge of the bench and having a groove upon its side face, a screw passing through the opening in the head nut and having a` handle at one end, a head swiveled to the other end of the screw and having interlocking sliding engagement with the groove and said clamping member, said head having a vertically extending socket therethrough, and jaw members each having a head, and a post adapted to extend into said sockets and to be vertically adjustable therein.
