UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE A. SCHEEFFER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ROWLAND P. RHODES, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
ELECTRIC TEMPERATURE REGULATOR FOR INCUBATORS.
Application filed June 9, 1921.
The object of my invention is to produce an exceedingly sensitive and accurate thermostat primarily designed for use in incubators, but, of course, not necessarily limited to such use.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention. Fig. 1 is a diagram of an incubator equipped with my improved thermostat, the View showing the wiring I" diagram; Fig. 2 an elevation in partial vertical section, on a larger scale, of the thermostat.
In the drawings, indicates a suitable base plate adapted to be secured to the under face of the top board of the incubating chamber. Depending from the center of the plate 10 is a thermostatic element 11 of the bellows type, the elements of which are filled with a readily expanding fluid, such for instance as ether. Depending from plate 10 is a post 12 upon which is clamped a split head 13 by a clamping screw 14, an insulating bushing 16 being interposed between the post and the head. The head is referably metallic and carries a terminal binding screw 17.
Screwed to head 13 is a spring metal tongue 18 provided at its outer end with a contact point 19 which it tends to press against an adjustable contact point 20 carried by a stem 21 threaded into a terminal piece 22 depending from the plate 10 and insulated therefrom, said terminal piece being provided with a suitable terminal clamp 23.
Serial No. 476,127.
The main circuit wires 17 and 23 are connected respectively to the terminal clamps 1'7 and 23 and include the heating coil 25. A resistance 26 is shunted across, as indicated, to prevent arcing between contact points 19 and 20. A double point switch 27 is provided to connect with the main supply wires M.
The bellows thermostatic element being exceedingly sensitive, it is apparent that a very slight variation in temperature will control the heating circuit.
I claim as my invention:
A thermostat comprising a main plate,
a post mounted upon and insulated from said main plate and carrying a binding terminal, a contact comprising a screw threaded through said post to form a normally fixed adjustable contact point, a second post mounted on said plate, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said post carrying a contact terminal and having a spring contact finger arranged to engage said normallyfixed contact and a thermostatic element of the bellows type carried by said main plate and arranged to move into engagement with the spring finger to move it out of contact with the normally fixed contact.
In witness whereof, I, GUSTAVE A. Sonanrrnn, have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana.
GUSTAVE A. SCHEEFFER.
