IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,579, dated February 9, 1875 application filed May 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEWIS J. IVES and JOHN LEARY, both of Medina, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grindstone-Boxes; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same.
Our invention consists of a removable bearing resting in seats of the main box or casing, and provided with raised surfaces, which receive the journal of the grindstone, and an intermediate chamber, which receives the oil, and provided also with end flanges, which overlap the seats to retain the box in place, as hereinafter described.

A is the exterior box or casing, which is of ordinary form, and provided with a cover, B. This box is provided with two notches, a a, on opposite sides, sunken of sufiicient depth to form seats to receive the bearing for the.

This bearing is made to fit into the seats'a. a, and at the ends are flanges b b, which overlap the seats, and bear closely against the outer sides of the main box, as shown, thereby making a close fit, and retaining the bearing from end movement, and also serving to close the space tightly, and prevent the entrance of water or grit. At each end also is a raised surface, 0, which receives the journal, and forms the bearing proper to the same, while between them is a depressed space, which forms an oil-chamber, d. The oil-chamber is supplied with oil through a duct, f, of the cover.
-We prefer to make the bearing 0 of brass or composition metal, as it is more effective in use; but it may be made of other material. When fitted in place in the seats a a, the upper surface of the bearing lies flush with the top of the main box, so that the cover can fit close on top, said cover having a concavity to fit the journal.
Grindstone-boxes of similar form are not new, having been before used, with the journal of the grindstone resting either in a solid or fixed bearing, or onfriction-rollers. The novelty in our invention consists of the separate and removable bearing 0, fitting in the seats a a, and constructed with the bearingsurface 0 c, flanges b b, and intermediate de pressed oil-chamber (Z.
By this construction of the device but a small bearing-surface is exposed to friction, a constant supply of oil is furnished, and the bearing is held firmly against either end or side movement. At the same time the hearing is removable, and can be replaced when worn.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, -with the interior box or casing A having the notched seats a a, of the bearing 0 adapted to said seats, and constructed with the end flangesb b, overlapping the seats a, and with the depressed oil-chamher (1 formed in the bottom of the bearing, all substantially as herein shown and described.
