Application and September 1,1925. Serial 1%. 53,913.
This invention' relates to certain improvements in door holders and has re-- lation more particularly to a device of this general character of an overhead type, and it is an objectof the inventio to provide a device of this kind which operates effectively to maintain the doorin full open position or at other intermediate positions. Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kindcomprising two pivotally connected sections, one of which being, operatively engaged with a door and the other with the door frame or kindred support and wherein means. is provided to prevent-said sections from having relative movement beyond a center line when the door is at the limit of its opening movement. 1
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several .parts of my improved door holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
'The novel features of my invention will.
hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illust-rating a. door holder constructed-in accordance with an sections,
two sections or arms tively,
re 3 is a fragmentary view in perof the pivoted end portions of the sections or arms of the holder;
Figure 6 is a view in pivoted end portion of one of the arms or Figure 7 is a view in plan of the bushing comprised'in the lock or latch mechanism herein comp ised. 7
As disclosed in the accompaning draw.- ings,
bottom plan of the my improved door holder comprises A and B of desired length and each having their outer extremities. or end p rtions operatively engaged. with the br ckets, 1 and 2 respecthe bracket 1 being secured to the crown sill C of a door casing or the like while the bracket 2is secured to the upper portion of the door D. The opposite or iny ner end portions of the arms A and B are provided with the circular plates or discs 3 in overlying relation and ivotally connected by a bolt 4 disposed through the axial centers thereof. By this means, the
arms or sections A and B are connected for relative swinging movement and inorder to prevent said arms when extended passing beyond a center, one of said arms, as B, is provided with arf inwardly or upwardly disposed lip 5 positioned preferably immediately adjacent to a disc orplate. 3 and with which is adapted to contact a suitably positioned angularly disposed lug 6 carried y theperiphery of the'disc or plate 3 of the arm A. 4
As herein set forth,the plate or disc 3 carried by. the arm A is uppermost and the under I surface of said plate or disc 3' is provided, with an annular series of pockets or recesses 7.in which is ada ted to be selectively engaged an end portlon of a looking bolt 85 This bolt 8 has its working end portion disposed through a suitably positioned opening 9 provided in the plate 3 of the arm B and is extended outwardly through a tubular member or sleeve'lO depending from the disc or plate 3 of the arm B sand preferably integrally formed there'- w1t Threaded or her or sleeve 10 is a bushing 11 through otherwise engaged within the lower or free end portion of the mem;
which the bolt 8 is directed, said bushing 11 serving as a guide for the bolt. Interposed between the inserted end of the "bushing 11 and an outstanding collar 12 6 carried by the bolt 8 is an expansible member 14 herein disclosed as a coil spring encircling said bolt and which operates normally to urge the bolt 8 into working engagement with a rmcket or recess 7, said collar 12 being arranged within the tubular member or sleeveil0.
As is particularly illustrated in Figure 7, the bore 15 of the 'bushing 11 has in communication therewith the diametrically opposed grooves 16 which are adapted to receive the oppositely directed outstanding projections 17 carried by the bolt 8 to per-' mit said bolt to have desired movement forlocking engagement with the plate or disc 0 1301 the arm A.
Through the instrumentality of the bolt 8 and the pockets or recesses'7,*the door D may be effectively locked or held in its full open or closed position or at selective intermediate points. a 4 The arms orsections A and B are normaL ly locked against relative swinging move ment but when it is desired to either open or close. the door D, it is only required to pull downwardly upon the bolt-8 until the projections 17- are free from the bushing 11 and then impose a slight rotary movement to the bolt 8 to bring such projections 17 out of register with the groove 16 in the bushing 11, the resultant'contact of the projections 17 with the outer end of the bushing 11 holding the bolt 8 againstreturn to looking or working position. I It will also be understoodthat when it is desired to have 40 the arms or sections A and B free for rela tive swinging movementzthe bolt 8- will be maintained in such extended position.
In order to facilitate the desired operation second the pockets of the first plate to lock the arms of the 'of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obviousthat my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:- An overhead door hanger comprising a pair of arms,
the plate of the other arm,
permit the arms to have relative swinging movement, the inner face of one of the plates being provided with an annular series of pockets, a bolt having movement through the plate for a selective engagement with against relative swinging movement, said bolt moving ina direction substantially parallel to the axis of the pivotal connection plates and extending downwardly from said plates, means for constantly urging the bolt toward the second plate for engagement Within .a pocket; and coacting means carried by the bolt and the second plate for holding the bolt free from the first plate. r In testimony whereof I hereunto atfix my SAMUEL J. RAWLINGS.
