Tanning-Apparatus. No. 159,510. Patented Feb. 9,1875.
UNITED SrATEs A'IEN FFIUE.
ERNEST O. HASERICK, OF MAYNARD, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE W. WILLIAMS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TANNING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,510, dated February 9, 1875; application filed February 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST E. HAsERIoK, of Maynard, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Apparatus for, and Process of, Tanning Hides and Skins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side elevation of the essential parts of the improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a top view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section of a part of the apparatus in a plane indicated by the line 00 00, Fig. 2.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The principal parts of my improved tan-,
ning apparatus are a vat or vats, A, a pressureproducing pipe, B, extending upward from the vat or vats to a height properly of not less than thirty-three feet, and even as high as seventyflve or one hundred feet with improved effect; a reservoir, 0, at the upper end of the pressure-pipe, to contain a supply of tan-liquor to produce the pressure; a second pressure-pipe, D, extending from the vat to the reservoir, and being surrounded by a steam-pipe, E, or its equivalent, for heating the liquor in the said pressure-pipe; a pipe, G, extending from a leakage vessel or cistern, H, under or below the vat to the reservoir, and provided with a force-pump, I, whereby to pump up the leakings from the vat back to the reservoir, and, if desired, additional supplies ot' the tan-liquor, though that may be furnished to the reservoir by other means.
The tan-vat A is to be made strong enough to resist the pressure of the liquid in the pipes B D. It may be made of wood, as usual, or other suitable material.
It has a sliding or equivalent cover, a, which has a packing, b, of india-rubber, or equivalent material, to prevent leakage under the pressure, and it is fastened on the vat by screw-bolts and nuts 0 c, or equivalent means.
Any leakage that takes place from the vat flows into the vessel H below, to be raised again to the reservoir 0 by the pump I.
The vat has a strainer, d, under the cover. to keep the pipes B D from becoming choked by pieces of tan-bark getting therein.
The pipes B -D are connected with the vat A through the sides, or through the cover a, as shown, which, being required to be frequently removed, may have a connectingjoint with the pipes readily separable by any suitable and known coupling, the pipes being jointed or swiveled, or otherwise constructed, so as to be readily moved to or away from it.
The main pressure-pipe B'may be surrounded with some material of slow heat-conducting properties, or otherwise equivalently protected from freezing cold in the winter.
The auxiliary pipe D, which either may extend entirely from the vat to the reservoir, or may be connected with the main pipe B, between the same, at the upper and lower ends, is provided with a suitable stop-cock, g, to regulate the quantity of liquid to be passed through it, and the pipe B should have a stopcock, h, to let on or take off the pressure, when required.
The surrounding pipe E may be filled with exhaust steam, admitted through a pipe, f, from the exhaust-pipe of a steam-engine or other source of heat; or the pipe D may extend through the flue of a chimney.
The pipes and the reservoir 0 are supported by a frame, L, or by a building or a chimney, as may be most convenient. Thus the heat of the liquid in the pipes and vat is regulated at pleasure to produce the best results according to experience.
I have found by experience that hides kept immersed in a tan-vat under the pressure of the same, and in a very short time, so that thereby I accomplish in twenty-four hours what requires at least a month by the ordinary tanning processes, and more evenly, since I tan the interior of the hides as completely as the outside thereof.-
In using this apparatus, the hides are alternately (as often as once a day, at least) im-.
The combination of the auxiliary pipe Dv and its heating pipe or case E, with the tanvat A and pressure-pipe B, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
Specification signed by me this 13th day of October, 1873.
ERNEST O. HASERIOK. Witnesses:
JOHN HILL1s,. EDWARD S. HUNTRESS.
