CUP-FORMING MACHINE WITH STAOKING ATTACHMENT.

This invention relates to an improved automatic paper cup forming machine and more particularly to mechanisms adapted to support cup blanks in position so that the glued surfaces thereof are supported in position by improved supports out of contact with a moving table while the cup blanks are being advanced into the field of operation of forming dies to be formed into cups which when discharged from the forming dies are deposited in a cup stacking attachment and are held in position by improved automatic means against springing out of a nested position before the glue has had time to set.
It is an object of this invention to provide an automatic cup forming machine wherein cup blanks are adapted to have adhesive automatically applied to certain portions of the cup blanks as the cup blanks are advanced toward a forming position, ith said cup blanks being supported by improved holding members so that the ad hesived surfaces of the cup blanks are not permitted to come into direct contact with a moving table while the blanks are being advanced to be formed into cups.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a paper cup forming machine having a cup stacking attachment connected therewith for receiving cups in nested relation without permitting the cups to rebound from a deposited nested position by means of presser mechanisms operated from the machine at predetermined times.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a cup forming machine having improved members adapted to support glued cup blanks out of engagement with a feed table during the time the cup blanks are advanced into the field of operation of forming dies.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide a cup forming machine wherein a blank after being removed from a cup blank magazine is carried over improved stationary supports or guides which serve to support a margin of the cup blank out of contact with a movable feed table during the time the cup blank is fed into the field of operation of forming dies.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a cup forming machine wherein adhesived cup blanks are supported in position out of contact with a movable feed table, said cup blanks being formed into cups which when deposited in a stacking attachment are held against rebounding by a presser device which is automatically operated at predetermined times through connection with the feed table operating mechanisms.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As. shown on the drawings:
The reference numeral 1 indicates a machine frame having supported thereon a head or standard 2. The machine is adapted to be driven from any suitable source of power. Mounted on the head 2 is a cup forming cone or die 3 and a pivotally supported cup presser cone or die 4 similar to the arrangement illustrated and described in the pending application of Cesare Barbieri for a machine for form' and gluing paper cups, filed July 20th, 1923, Serial No. 652, 63. Also mounted u n the machine frame 1 is a. on blank olding magazine 5 adapted to ho] a stack of roperly formed on blanks in stacked re ation ready to be fe' into the machine into the field of operation of a glue or adhesive applying mechanism comprising a shelf 6 upon which a glue box 7 is supported. Rotatably supports in the glue box 7 is a glue feed roller 8 adapted to be driven from the machine by suitable driving connections. Rotatably supported on brackets 9 formed on the side of the glue box 7 is an upper glue roller 10 positioned to rotatably and resiliently contact the ripheral surface of the lower glue roll 8 igure 3). The bearings for the upper glue roller 10 are adapted to be adjusted by means of set screws 11. Springs are engaged around the set screws 11 and act to resiliently hold the glue spreading roller 10 in resilient contact with t e larger roller 8. The rollers 8 and 10 rotate at different rates of speed so that there is some slippage between said roller whereby the glue on the large roller 8 is evenly spread by the smaller roller 10. The use of a. glue spreader roller 10, in place of a scraper blade, serves to" afford a self cleaning glue supplying mechanism wherein the fuzz coming from the blanks is not permitted to accumulate but is spread by the upper roller 10 and used up with the glue so that the glue mechanisms are of a self-cleaning type and do not require removal and cleaning of the parts.
A rod or shaft 12 is supported in suitable bearings 13 fixed on the machine frame 1 and it is connected to be driven from the driving mechanism of the machine. The shaft 12 also rojects through a bearing formed on a racket 14 of the machine frame. An arm or lever 15 is pivoted on one end of the shaft 12 and has the upper end thereof connected to 0 rate an inclined reciprocating blank fe table 16. The slide table 16 is mounted parallel guide rods 17 positioned beneath a stationary table 18 having an opening therein. The stationary table 18 is supported on the machine frame in a horizontal position above the level of the inclined table 16. The slide table 16 is adapted to be reciprocated by the lever 15 in a plane substantially that of the meeting surfaces of the cup forming dies 3 and 4. The table 16 has a wide head portion 19 provided with a plurality of upturned projections 20 and 20. Curved cug blank stops 21 are provided along a curve mar 'n of the table head portion 19 to the outslde of short blank supportin pins 22 as illustrated Figure 4. A th ir porting pin 22 is also provided upon the upr surface of the table head portion 19. A

The upturned fingers 20 are shorter than the finger 20' and serve to hold a cup blank supported out of contact with the upper surface of the enlarged head portion 19 of the movable table 16. Secured to the machine frame (Fi re 4) are the ends of a pair of stationary ars or arms 25 which pro ect over the top of the to slide on a pair of blank supmovable inclined table 16 with the ends of said bars projecting over the curved margin of the enlar ed head portion 19 of the table when the ta 1e 16 is in its advanced position. The ends of the bars 25 act to support thetrailing or curved margin of a cup blank so that together with the pins 22 and the fingers 20 and 20 there is no chance for the glued under surface of the cup blank to come into. contact with the surface of the movable table.
The table actuating lever 15 has connected thereto one end of a coiled spring 26 the other end of which is connected to an adj usting screw 27. The screw 27 is mounted on an arm or plate 28 having a hub fixed on the shaft 12. Integrally formed on the plate 28 is an extension 29 which is held in contact with an adjustable screw 30 which projects through a boss formed on the lever 15 (Figure 1). i
A blank feeding mechanism is provided for delivering cup blanks discharged from the magazine 5 from the stationary table 18 over onto the stationary bars 25. The blank feeding mechanism is operable from a gear 31 driven by the machine operating mechanism. The gear 31 is in mesh with a gear 32 which is fixed on one end of a shaft supported in bearing brackets 33 (Figure 5) formed on the machine frame. A bevelled pinion 34 is fixed .on the other end of the shaft in the bearings 33 and meshes with a bevelled gear 35. The bevelled gear 35 is fixed on the inner end of a shaft 36 supported in hearings on uprights 37 of an auxiliary frame secured to the machine frame. The shaft 36 is provided for the purpose of affording a drive for a blank feeding mechanism associated with the blank holding mag- .azine 5 for the purpose of discharging cup blanks from the bottom of said magazine one at a time onto the stationary table 18.
After a cup blank has been advanced from the magazine 5 onto the stationary table 18, said cup blank is in position ready to have a film of glue applied or stamped thereon in a predetermined configuration through an opening provided in the stationary table 18. The glue applying mechanism is operated from the machine and since it forms no part of the present invention a description and showing of the same is omitted.
After a cup blank has been fed from the cup blank magazine onto the stationary table the cup blank is stamped with a film of glue. The stamped cup blank is then ready to be advanced or transferred by a cup blank transfer mechanism onto the stationary bars 25 and then onto the reciprocating blank feed table 16 when in its retracted position. The cup blank transfer mechanism is operated through a crank arm 38 fixed on the shaft 12 to the outside of the plate 28. The
upper end of the crank arm 38 is pivotally connected to one end of a connecting rod 39. The upper end of the connecting rod 39 is connected to a cup blank gripper mechani"'n not shown or described but similar to that illustrated and described in the copending application hereinbefore referred to. When the blank gripping or transfer mech-' anism engages a cup blank on the stationary table and transfers the cup blank into the machine the advanced cup blank rests primarily upon the supporting bars 25 and beneath the raised arm 40. The supporting bars 25 therefore afford a means for sup porting a glued cup blank in a position out of direct contact with the reciprocating table so that the film of glue on the blank will notcome in contact with the table proper. With the advance of the table 16 the stops 21 engage the blank and advance the same over the base 25 and onto the pins 22 and the fingers 20 and 20 of the table head 19. When the blank is moved onto the supporting members of the reciprocating table the blank is pulled underneath the lowered resilient spring arm 40 and beneath the tip of a spring arm 41. the, upper end of which is secured to a bar 42 secured transversely of the machine frame upon the top of a yoke frame 43. As illustrated in Figure 5 the spring arm 41 has secured thereto resilient fingers or spring members 53 and 54 adapted to resiliently contact the upper surface of the cup blank to prevent buck-- ling and to direct the cup blank between the cup forming cones or dies. The spring arm 40 is mounted on a block secured on one end of a rotatable rod or shaft 44 supported by the arms of the yoke member 43 (Figure 5). Secured to the end of the shaft 44 is an arm 45 having a roller 46 supported on the end thereof having co-action with the periphery of a cam 47 which is keyed on the end of a shaft 48.
A cup blank after being removed from the cup blank holding magazine 5 and advanced in position onto the bars 25 and onto the pins of the reciprocating table after adhesive has been applied to said cup blank, is advanced by the reciprocating table into a. position wherein one portion of the cup blank is projected between the cup forming dies 3 and 4 to be formed into a cup thereby. Connected with the cup forming die 3 is a cup ejecting mechanism of any desired construction or of a construction similar to that illustrated and described in the co-pending application hereinbefore referred to. The cup ejecting mechanism is adapted at a predetermined time to blow or push a completed cup oil of the forming die 3 into a cup stacking mechanism at the front end of the machine. When a finished cup is discharged from the forming die 3 it is discharged into a curved guide or chute 49 the nected to the bracket 62. A. fork 80 secured to the bracket .62 removably receives the upper end of a slotted cup collecting tube 50 into which a slidable arm 51 projects to support a cup receiving holder within the tube. Pivoted on the bottom of the cup guide chute 49 is 'a notched shutter 52 adapted to be swung into a closed position as illustrated in Figure 2 to prevent cups from entering the tube 50.
The arm 51 is formed on a'sleeve 55 which is slidable on a guide rod 56. Also formed on the sleeve 55 is a guide arm 57 which engages against a vertical tube or pipe 58 in which a counterweight is suspended by means of a cord 59 as illustrated in Figure 2. The cord 59 is trained around a pulley wheel 60 and'is attached to the arm 51. The pulley wheel 60 is mounted on a shaft 61 which is supported upon a bracket arm 62 mounted on top of the pipe 58. A ratchet wheel 63 is supported on the shaft 61 adjacent the pulley wheel 60 and has a pawl 64 co-oacting therewith and operable by a bar 65 from the machine.
At the beginning of the operation when a completed cup is discharged from the cupforming die 3 into the chute 49, it is received by the hand of an operator and held in position to receive successive cups until the chute is filled. lhe cups as formed are thus gradually stacked to afford a stack of cups 66 as illustrated in Figure 2. The cups 66 are thus gradually stacked until the lower end of the stack is low enough to seat in the receptacle supported on the inner end of the arm 51 within the tube 50. When this condition occurs the cups discharged from the forming die 3 are discharged into'the uppermost cup and due to the rolled construction of the cups have a tendency to rebound and spring open before the glue sets.
It will of course be understood that the formed cups at the beginning of the operation are stacked in the chute 49 until the chute is completely filled. The stack of cups is then permitted to rest in the holder on the arm 51. As the cups are stacked in the tube 50 the arm 51 is automatically lowered so that the stack of cups is lowered therewith. WVhen a predetermined number of cups are stacked in the tube 50 the shutter arm 52 is closed thereby permitting the filled tube 50 to be removed and replaced by an empty tube while the cup stackingmechanism continues to operate to keep the tube 49 filled with cups. If desired the shutter arm 52 may be omitted in which case the operator manually lifts the cups in the chute 49 a distance sufficient. to permit the filled can 50 to be removed and replaced by an empty can.
For the purpose of obviating the unseating and springing open of the cups in the upper end of the chute a cup pusher mechanism is provided which is operable from the machine. The cup pusher mechanism cornprises a rod 67, one end of which is positioned to co-act with the table reciprocating lever 15 as illustrated in Figure 6. The other end of the rod 67 is bent at an angle with the angled end 68. thereof projecting through a slot 69 provided in one end of a crank arm 70 (Figure 7). The arm 70 has the other end thereof pivotally mounted 'on a bracket 71 attached to the machine frame. Secured to the arm 70 is a pusher arm 72 the end of which is provided with a pusher head or tip 73 which at a predetermined time is adapted to engage the open end of a formed cup to follow and push the cup into the upper end of the stack of nested cups in the chute 49. The pusher head 73 moves toward the mouth of the chute 49 as a cup is being discharged so that the cup when entering the upper end of,the stack of nested cups is held seated in' a nested position against rebounding andespringing open. Attached to the machine frame member 74' is one end of a coiled spring 75 the other end of which is attached to the pusher arm 7 2. Also attached to the. machine frame member 74 is one end of a spring or guide 76 which is curved as illustrated in Figure 7 to afford an arm adapted to be positioned in an inclined position parallel to the edge of the forming die 3. The resilient guide member 76 serves as a guide for the cups as they are discharged from the cup forming die 3, and acts to direct the discharged cups into the mouth of the chute 49.
The operation is as follows:
The cup forming machine is adapted to be operated from any suitable source of power. When the machine is started a drive is imparted to the gear 31 which is mounted to permit a drive to be transferred to the cup forming die 3 and to the cup presser die 4 in a manner similar to that illustrated and described in the Patent No. 1,495,038 to Cesare Burbieri foran automatic cup forming machine, dated Ma 20th, 1924.
A stack of prepare cup blanks of a desired shape is placed in the blank holding magazine 5 with the. lowermost cup blank positioned to permit removal thereof from the magazine by the cup blank discharging or feeding mechanism operated from the machine. A cup blank which has been removed from the bottom of the cup holding magazine 5 is advanced onto the stationary table 18 into a position wherein the cup blank is adapted to have a film of glue stamped or appliedto the under surface thereof. The cup blank which has thus been advanced onto the stationary table is held in a properly centered position by suitable guides with a portion of the cup blank on which glue is to be applied disposed over an openmg in the stationary table in the field of operation of a glue applying pad or device 77 which'is mounted on a slidable bar 78 which is movably mounted in suitable guides and is o erable from the machine.
The g ue is carried in the glue box 7 in which the glue feed roller 8 operates. The glue feed roller is adapted to receive a'drive from the machine through suitable mechanisms. The excess glue carried upwardly by the feed roller 8 from the box 7 is removed by the action of the auxiliary noller 10 which evenly spreads the glue so that only a thin film of glue is carried past the auxiliary roller 10 by the feed roller 8. i The auxiliary roller 10 is adapted to be adjusted by means of the set screws 11 and the coiled springs thereon so that the amount of glue carried by the feed roller 8 may be readily controlled. -The spring impelled auxiliary roller 10 co-acting with the roller 8 affords a self cleaning glue distributing mechanism in which any fuzz from the paper blanks is not distributed and-used up with the glue.
At this stage in the operation the glue applying pad 77 is lowered and by a movable roller means operated by the machine (but, not illustrated) a portion: of the glue car ried by the rotating roller 8 is transferred and applied to the upper stamping surface of said pad 77. The glued pad 77 is next moved upwardly through the opening in the stationary table and acts to stamp a film of glue on the under surface of the cup blank.
After the application of a film of glue to the cup blank the pad 77 is retracted. The glue stamped cup blank is now ready to be gripped and transferred from the stationary table 18 onto the bars 25 above the reciprocating table 16. When the forming dies 3 and 4 are rotated the table 16 is reciprocated by means of the lever 15. The lever 15 is oscillated from the shaft 12 which is rocked back and forth by a crank arm connected eccentrically with the driving gear 31. When a glue stamped cup blank is advanced onto the stationary bars 25 the table 16moves back toward the stationary table 18 and under the bars 25. The blank supported on the stationary bars 25 is free from direct contact with the table proper and a little in advance of the stops 21 mounted on the reciprocating table. As the table 16 moves outwardly the stops 21 engage the cup blank and push the same outwardly on the bars 25 onto the fingers 20 and 20 and pins 22 of the table head 19. As the cup blank is advanced by the reciprocating tabo 16 it is conducted beneath the tips of the resilient arms 40 and 41 and under the auxiliary fingers or arms 53 and 54 which are attached to the resilient arm 41 as is clearly ermitted to accumulate but is evenly illustrated in Figure 4. The lowered resilient arm acts to frictionally contact the upper surface of the cup blank to pull the cup blank backwardly against the stops 21 when the table 16 advances. At the time the table 16 advances a spring controlled finger 81 mounted below the table 16 contacts the advance edge of the cup blank and pushes the cup blank back onto the table 16 into a central position. The cup blank is thereby properly centered on the enlarged head portion 19 of the reciprocating table. The spring arms 41, 53 and 54 are provided forguiding the cup blank between the forming dies and prevent buckling of the cup blank. The glued cup blank properly centered upon the reciprocating table is now advanced by the table into the field of operation of the dies 3 and 4 to be gripped thereby as the table 16 again starts to move back toward the cup blank magazine 5. With the centered cup blank resting on the pins 22, the fingers 20 and 20 and the ends of the supporting bars 25, said cup blank 1s projected between the rotating dies 3 and 4 and the resser die 4 is moved downwardly toward t e forming die 3, thereby gripping the advance portion of the blank between the dies. The cup blank is thus pulled automatically over its supports into the field of operation of the forming dies and is formed around said forming die 3 with the main portion of the cup blank first being formed into acup after which the glued portion of the blank is gradually wrapped around the body of the cup to reinforce the same. The completed cup is thus formed on the die 3 rea y to be automatically discharged from the forming die by a blast of air or other suitable means similar to that described in the Patent No. 1,494,038 of Cesare Barbieri for an automatic cup forming machine, dated May 20th, 1924.
When a cup is completed the presser die 4 is first automatically moved away from the forming die 3 to release the cup. The cup being released by the presser die it is now ada ted to be discharged from the forming die y a cu discharging mechanism operated from t e machine so that the cup is guided by the guide member 76 (Figure 7) oil of the forming die 3 through a path leadin into the mouth of the curved chute 49. ith a stack of cups 66 in the chute 49 (as illustrated in Figure 2) the cup discharged into the upper end of the stack of cups has a tendency to rebound and sprin open so that the cups are not properly hel in seated stacked relation one within the other to permit the glue to properly set or dry during the time that the cups pass through the chute into the tube 50. To obviate the rebounding and o ning up of the cups at the upper end of t e stack of cups 66 in the chute 49, the pusher head 73 is provided and is operated from the lever 15 which reci rocates the movable table 16. As the cup b ank is advanced by the table 16 into the field of operation of the forming dies 3 and 4 the blank is gripped by the forming dies and formed into a cup as the reciprocating table moves toward the cup blank magazine 5. When this operation occurs the lever 15 which serves to return the table 16 into a cup blank receiving position moves away from the rod 67 (Figures 6 and 7) thereby permitting the spring 75 to pull the arm 70 from the full line position of Figure 7 toward the frame members 74. Movement of the arm 70 pulls the pusher head 73 into a release or out of the way position to permit a formed cup to be discharged from the forming die 3 to be delivered into the upper end of the cup receiving chute 49. At the time the cup is discharged from the forming die 3 the lever 15 acts to again advance the table 16 and in addition thereto actuates the rod 67 to cause the same to swing the arm 70 from a released position to thev full line position of Figure 7 against the action of the sprin 75. It will thus be noted that the pusher ead 73 is brought into operation to follow closely against the open end of the cup being discharged so that the cup as it is discharged into the upper end of the stack of nested cups cannot rebound or become unseated, but on the other hand is slightly pushed into the open end of the stack of cu s and held in such osition so that the de 'vered cu s in the 0 ate 49 are all properly seate one within the other permitting the glue used in the forming of said cups to set and (1 during the time the cups travel through the chute 49 and are delivered into the removable tube 50.
Each time a cup is delivered into the tube 50 the movable sup orting arm 51 is lowered a predetermined istance b the action of the bar which operates t e pawl 64 and the ratchet wheel 63. When the tube 50 is filled by a stack of nested on s the stack of cups above the top of the tu 50 is manually raised to permit the shutter member 52 to be moved into closed position across the bottom of the chute 49 to receive the cups while the filled tube 50 is removed and replaced by an empty tube. It will thus be noted that the machine need not be sto ped durin the time the tube 50 is removed and that t e cups may be continually stacked in the chute 49 with the pusher head 73 acting automatically at predetermined times to hold the on s seated in nested position against reboun ing and opening.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide ran e without departing from the principles of t is invention, and I therefore do not purpose the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated y the prior art.

In a cup forming machine of the class described the combination with a pair of forming-dies, of a reciprocating table, a plurality of stationary members projected over the table, a plurality of projections on said reciprocatin table with the ends of said projections in the plane of the upper surface of said stationary members, means fordirecting a cup blank into a position to rest on saidstationary members and on the proljections formed on said reciprocating tab e to hold the cup blank out of direct contact with said reciproating table, and means controlled by the reciprocatin table for centering the cup blank on sai stationary members and on said table projections beforethe cup blank is delivered to the forming dies.

In a cup forming machine of the class described the combination with a pair of forming dies, of a reciprocating table, a plurality of projections on said table, stationary members projecting over the reciprocating table means for delivering a cup blank into position to be supported by said table procctions and by said stationary members to hold the cup blank out of direct contact with the reciprocating table, a pivotally mounted spring arm positioned above the reciprocating table, a resilient arm mounted on the machine above the reciprocating table, a plurality of resilient members on said resilient arm, said resilient members, said resilient arm, and said pivotally mounted spring arm all adapted tocontact the upper surface of the finished cup blank when the reciprocating table is advanced to cause centering of the cup blank and holding the same against buckling while the cup blank is fed between the forming dies.

In a cup forming machine of the class described the combination with a reci rocating table having a plurality of blah -supporting projections thereon, a plurality of blank supporting members projecting over the reciprocatin table into a position to permit the ends of the projecting member to co-act with the table projections to ho d a cup blank supported in a centered position out of direct contact with the reciprocating table.

In a cup forming machine of the class described the combination with a reci rocating table having a plurality of cup b ank supporting projections thereon, of a plurality of cup blank supporting members projecting over the reciprocating table into a position to assist the projections on said reciprocating table in supporting a cup blank in position out of direct contact with said reciprocatin r table, and a plurality of resilient members mounted above the reciprocating table adapted to act on the cup blank to move the same into a. centered position on said projections and on said stationary members when the reciprocating table is advanced.

In a cup forming machine of the class described the combination with a recipro: cating table, of means for advancing a cup blank over the reciprocatin table, and a plurality ofstationary mem ers adapted to support one margin of the advanced cup blank in a. osition out of direct contact with the reciprocating table.
