The supply of gasified oil is controlled by means of the needle valve 29. The latter comprises the usual valve stem 30 having a hand wheel 31 at the extremity thereof and a valve head 32 operatively disposed adjacent the valve opening 28. Means are provided for injecting steam or compressed air for aiding in atomizing the gasified oil. For this purpose a valve 33 is inserted in the supply line 34 for the steam or compressed air. The valve 33 is of the usual construction having the valve head 35, and the lia-'nd wheel 36. Below the valve 33, an annular chamber 37 is provided disposed adjacent the lower end 38 of the supply line 34 for receiving the steam or compressed air. The latter is then led through small openings or channels 39 around the valve chamber 27 leading through the opening 40 by means of the channels 41, so that an intimate mixture of the gasified oil and steam or compressed air is obtained upon emerging from the outlets 28 and 40. Before entering the furnace the atomized gas and steam, or compressed air enter the circular mixing chamber 42 where an intimate mixing of the gasified oil and compressed air or steam is obtained, and the A gasified oil is then further atomized so as to produce a highly efficient combustible mixture, which will burn without smoke. Orifices 43 for'admitting air from the outside are provided in the mixing chamber for starting the burner when no steam or air under pressure has -yet been admitted. The supply of air may be regulated in any suitable manner, during continued operation of the burner as by means of a ring or sleeve 44 having ports 44a which ring may be operated to close or open the orifices 43 thus-securing proper combustion at all times.
It is clear that part of the heat of combustion, generated in the furnace, serves to heat up the distillation and gasification tube 16, particularly by reverberation through the passage 15. For effectively and positively controlling the temperature to which the oil is subjected during distillation and gasification, I provide the dampers 45, 46, disposed horizontally over the tube 16 between the latter and the passage 15. The dampers may be of any suitable design, preferably arcuate in cross-section, as shown in the drawing, and when spaced'from each other as shown in Fig. 2 to provide a variable opening 47 wheret-hrough heat from the furnace box is transmitted to or impinged on the distillation and gasification tube 16. The said dampers 45, 46 extend respectively from the upper ends -of the arms 48, 49, which are secured at their opposite ends respectively to the rock shafts 52, 53, having the operative handles 54, 55. The dempers 45, 46 may be moved toward or away from each other by rotating the rock shaft 52, 53, thus varying the size of the opening 47, and regulating the heating of the tube 16, as will be readily understood.
For. starting the hydrocarbon burner, I provide the trough or basin 56 disposed belowthe distillation and gasification tube 16 and adapted to contain a. suitable liquid fuel such as alcohol which is burned to supply the initial heat for raising the tube 16 to the required temperature for distilling and gasifying the oil.
The operation of the device will now be clear. The hydrocarbon oil is fed through theinlet 23 into the distillation and gasification tube 1'6, where it is heated to the required temperature. In the lower compartment 17. the oil is distilled so that volatile combustible ingredients of lower boiling points are separated from those of the higher boiling point oils, thus eliminating to a large degree the smoke producing elements. From the distillation compartment 17, the distillate passes through the passage 20 into the gasification compartment 18 and then into the atomizing chamber 42 through the valve 29 which regulates the supply of gaseous fuel to the furnace box. The steam or compressed air line is opened shortly after the burner has warmed up and as already explained is intimately mixed with the gaseous fuel before entering the furnace box. At the start the air orifices 43 are adjusted by means of the ring 44 for supplying the initial air to the furnace. After the burner has been started, the outside air supply may be shut off or regulated to obtain the greatestheating effect. The dampers 45, 46 are also adjusted to provide the desired size of opening 47 for the radiant heat from the furnace box to the distillation and gasification chamber so as to obtain the maximum heating effect.
vIn Fig. 4 of the drawing a modified form of the burner is shown whereby the. oil inlet portion of the burner may readily be disassembled and dismounted. In this form the distillation and gasification tube 16 is a separate member which may be inserted through an opening in the supporting frame 12. The inlet 23, outlet 26, and exhaust 24" are all in one piece or casting 56. which may be detachably mounted in operative relation to the tube 16a. In the particular form shown in Fig. 4, this tube is provided with a flange 57 which is mitered as at 57a to form a seat for the correspondingly mitered member 58 of the piece- 56. A lug 59 extends from the frame 12a and a screw bolt 60 extends through said lug with its head abutting against the piece 56 to secure it in position. The baffle plate 19 is secured atone endto the head of the piece 56 and extends into the tube 16a so that when the piece 56 is removed, the balile is withdrawn together therewith.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a furnace adapted to burn a hydro-carbon fuel, a hydrocarbon oil burner therefor comprising a compartment, means in said compartment for distilling and gasifying the oilfuel suplied to said burner, saidcompartment having an opening therein in communication with said furnace whereby .the interior thereof may be heated from said furnace by reverberation of the heat thereof into said opening, and means for regulating the amount of heat reverberated through said opening.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a furnace adapted to burn a hydrocarbon fuel, a hydrocarbon oil burner therefor comprising a compartment, means in said compartment for distilling and gasifying the oil fuel supplied to said burner, said compartment having an opening therein in communication with said furnace whereby the interior thereof maybe heated from said furnace by reverberation of the heat thereof into said opening, and means for regulating the amount of heat reverberated through. said opening, said regulating means comprising one or more damper means disposed between sald furnace andsaid compartment'so as to vary the size of said opening.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a furnace adapted to burn a hydrocarbon oil fuel, and a hydrocarbon oil burner therefor having a distillation and gasification chamber adapted to be heated by'reverberation from said furnace, and means for regulating said heating of said distillation and gasification chamber, said means comprising one .Lor more damper members disposed between said furnace and said chamber and means for opening and closing said dampers so as to regulate the amount of heat reverberated from the furnace.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a furnace adapted to burn a hydrocarbon fuel, a hydrocarbon oil burner therefor including a distillation and gasification chamber disposed so as to be heated yby the latter by reverberation, an outlet from said chamber for the gasified oil. and an inlet in communication with said outlet for supplying a fluid under pressure to mix with sald gasified oil and atomize the latter.

The art or process of securing heat energy from a combustible fluid consisting in exposing the fluid to heat, adjusting the intensity. of the heat for' vaporizing and ex# panding the fluid, atomizing the vaporous constituents thereof by a jet of other fluid -under pressure, and then introducing and regulating an air supply to the resulting mixture prior to combustion.

The art or process of burning liquid hydrocarbons consisting in vaporizing and expanding said liquid hydrocarbons by heat ing same, passing the vaporous constituents thereofthro'ugh a heated passage, adjusting the intensity of the heat of said passage, then atomizing said constituents by a jet of other fluid under pressureand subsequently introducing and regulating an atmospheric air supply prior to combustion.

The art or process of securing heat energy`from a combustible fluid which comprises simultaneously vaporizing and expanding the fluid by exposing same to heat, adjusting the intensity of the heat for controlling the vaporization and expansion of ing the heated vapor constituents-With a jet of other fluid, spraying the mixture, and subsequently introducing and regulating the atmospheric air supply.
