UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE.
VINCENZO MONTALBETTI, OF MILAN, ITALY, ASSIGNOR TO L. G. MARINI,
l OF WASHINGTON, D. C. n
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-TIP RETAINERS.
Specification forming part of Lettels Patent No. 159,438, dated February 2, 1875; application filed November 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, VINCENZQ MONTALBETTI, of Milan, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Attachments; and I do hereby' declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a view of my improvement attached to an umbrella, lshowing it in use. Fig. 2 isa vertical section of my improvement, and Fig. 3 is a detached view thereof.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted-by like letters.
This invention relates to umbrella-rib-tip retainers; and consists of an annular beveled cap, and a thimble having a chamber for inclosing a spring, in combination with a second thimble attached to the umbrella-handle, and provided at its upper end with a flange underlapping the upper end of the cap-thimble to receive the upper end of a spring, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to an annular cap, to the edges of the top opening of which is secured, in any known Way, at about its middle, a thimble or short tube, B, with its ends bent at right angles to its vertical portion, the upper one overlapping and resting upon the upper lianged end of the thimble or tube G, embracing the umbrella-handle D, and the lower one resting against the latter tube or thimble; by which construction it will be seen that a space or chamber, c, is provided for the reception of the coiled or other spring E. One endv of this spring (the upper one) bears aga-inst the upper flanged end of the thimble O, and the lower end thereof against the lower hanged end of the capthimble B, by which downward pressure is exerted upon the cap A, to keep it over the ends or tips of the ribs of the umbrella, as seen in Fig. 1. The cap A is provided on its lower side with an inwardly inclined or beveled rim or llange, a, as seen in Figs. land 2, by which, as the ends of the ribs F F are encircled by the hand and forced against the sides of the cap,the latter will be caused to ascend and let the ends of said ribs under the cap without the interposition of the hand, after which it will descend and confine them to the umbrella-handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by- Letters Patent, is-
An umbrella-tip retainer consisting of a beveled cap, Aa, and hanged thimble B, constructed in one piece, the spring E, and flan ged thimble O, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
