.ATTORNEY Patented July 27, 1926.
UNITED STATES ARTHUR E. ANAKIN, 0F LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA..`
BOLT ANI) LOCK.
Application led September 9, 1925. Serial No. 55,379.
This invention relates to bolts and has special reference to a bolt and lock so arranged as to permit the bolt to be freely manipulated at certain times, while at other times the bolt can only be manipulated by the use of a ke One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this description.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of locking bolt wherein the bolt may be free for manipulation when so desired but may also be locked against such free manipulation.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a front view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the part of the device showing the bolt retracted.
In carrying out the objects of this inven- I'ion there is provided a base plate or casing 10 whereon is mounted a bolt supporting barrel 11, the two being welded or otherwise suitably secured together. Within the barrel 11 is slidably and rotatably mounted a bolt 12 and projecting from this bolt is a pin 13 which works in a T-shaped slot, the stem 14 of which extends longitudinally of the barrel and the head whereof extends circumferentially around the barrel to provide an up er arm 15 and a lower arm 15. Thus t e bolt may be shot outwardly of the barrel and, when so shot, the pin may be swung to rest in one of the sides of the head and lock the bolt against longitudinal movement.
Within the casing 10 is provided a lock 16 preferably of what is commonly know as the Yale type. This lock carries an operating arm 17 which connects with a in a bracket 21 fixed .crank plate 18 by a link 19. The crank plate 1s fixed on a spindle 2O which is supported within the casing 10. lFixed to this spindle is a do 22 which is sc arranged that it may pass t rough registermg slots 23 in the casing yand barrel and enter a recess 24 formed in the bolt 12 upon the latter being moved to locking position and the pin 13 turned downwardly.
A keeper 25 is provided to receive the end of the bolt in locking position and the locking end of said bolt is reduced and is provided with a hardened steel Ysleeve 26 which rotates freely on the reduced end and bridges between the barrel and keeper so that any attempt to saw 0E the end of the bolt is without avail.
This keeper is provided with a shouldered portion 27 having notches 28 therein wherethrough a cross pin 29 carried by the bolt .12 may pass, the pin when turned preventing the bolt from being retracted.
Spring 30 serves to urge the dog 21 into locking position and hold it in such position until released by the key.
In operation the device may be used as an ordinary bolt by turning the pin upwardly upon moving the bolt to engage the keeper or by turning the pin downwardly the Yale lock may be used to keep the bolt shot and prevent the door being opened without the use of a key.
Obviously the device may be right or left handed and may be inverted in position.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In combination, a bolt, a supporting barrel therefor having a T-shaped slot in its wall, a pin for actuating said bolt extending through said slot and attached to said bolt to move the same, the stem of said T-shaped slot extending longitudinally of the barrel and the head of said slot extending transversely of the barrel end projecting on opposite sides of the stem portion of the slot, and a lock having a member adapted to engage said bolt upon the pin being positioned in one end of said head, the locking element being free Jfrom locking engagement with the bolt upon the pin being ositioned at 'the other end of the head o the T-shaped slot and in the stem of the T-shaped slot. v
2. In combination, a bolt barrel, a bolt slidably and rotatably mounted therein, said barrel Ibeing provided with a T-shaped slot having its stem portion extending longitudinally of the barrel and its head portion extending circumferentially thereof, an operating pin extendin from said bolt through said slot, the bolt having a notch therein bearing fixed relation tosaid pin, and a key operated lock having a locking element to enter said notch and prevent rotatory movement of the bolt upon the pin being positioned at one extremity of the head of the T-shaped slot, the locking element being free from locking engagement with the bolt upon the pin being positioned at the other end of the head of the T-shaped slot and in the stern of the T-shaped slot.
3. In combination, a bolt barrel, a bolt slidably and rotatably mounted therein, said barrel being provided with a T-shaped slot having its stem portion extending longitudinally ofthe barrel and its head portion extending circumferentially thereof, an operating pin extendin from said bolt through said slot, the bolt aving a notch therein bearing fixed relation to said pin, a key operated lock having a locking element to enter said notch and prevent rotatory movement of the bolt lupon the pin being positioned at one extremity of the head of the T-shaped slot, the locking element being free from locking engagement with the bolt upon the pin being positioned at the other end of the head of the T-shaped slot and in the stem of the T-shaped slot, and spring means constantly urging the locking elements into said notch.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature. l
ARTHUR E. ANAKIN.
