I This invention relates to typewriting' machines. especially those used for bookkeeping. is sometimes desired to typcthe same matter (in a ledger-sheet form, a longitudinally-folded pack of worksheets bearing a printed statement-form and a pack of proofsheet forms. all of which forms have a number of similar colun'ms to receive similar entries. As these forms are usually printed on dilierentsized sheets of paper. and have other cohunns to receive other typed matter. in. addition to these similar columns referred to, it is diflicult to bring the similar COlUl'l'Hlfii into registration. Moreover, all of the mat ter' is not to be typed during; one typii'ig" operation, and the difle'rent sheets and packs must be removed from and reinserted into the machine possibly a dozen or more times during the course of a month.
Sheet-collating means, to simplify these constantly repeated operations of aligning and typing", constitutes one of the features of this invention. Y 7
Another feature of this invention is the provision of a carbon-pack bearing identification means and having carbonsheets that maybeinterleaved between the folds of a longitudinally=folded pack of worksheets bearing printed statement-forms, so that the latter may be vtiled away between the times when entries are being typed upon it.
Still another feature of this invention is the provision of a carbon-pack having;- carbon-sheets of different widths so that when work-sheets are assembled therein, parts ot those work-sheets will be left exposed to receive type-impressions instead of carbonimpressions of typed matter.

As .is usual in bookkeeping machines, a platen 10 is mounted on a platen-axle 11 which is supported by a carriage 12. The usual feed-rolls 13 and 14 are used to coing work underneath and around the platen 10. Faper-fingers 15, mounted to be adjustable longitudinally of the platen 10, are provided to secure a work-sheet or pack in position while other work-sheets or packs are being inserted in the machine, and a writing-line scale 15 is provided to assist in bringing those work-sheets or packs into longitudinal registration.
Mounted on the ends and running longitudinally of the carriage 12 is a tablesnpporting bar 16, which has adjustably mounted thereon the three collating tablesections 1T, 18 and 19. The left edge of the table-section 17 is upturned ninety degrees to form a side guide 20, which has fastened to it near its lower end a paper-clamp 21. By referring to Figure 6 of the drawings, it will be noted that the carbon-sheet 48 is considerably narrower than the carbonsheet 47, so that a wide margin 40 islett exposed on the upper work-sheet 40 of the prool sheet pack 40. It has not been mentioned that the work-sheets 40 of the proofsheet pack 40 are not provided with headings for names and addresses similar to those of the ledger-sheet 38 and the longitudinally-folded statement-pack 39. This emission of a heading from the work-sheets 40 is made because the work-sheets 40 receive transcriptions from other orders besides those of Mr. Doe, as has been explained. It is desirable, however, to make identification of all transcriptions made to the work sheets 40 as easy as possible, and, to accomplish this, the name of each customer is typed in the exposed marking 40 of the work-sheet 40 opposite the last line of matter transcribed from his order.
Having prepared a ledger-sheet 88 and a longitudinally-folded statement-pack 39 assembled with a carbon-pack 41, with the name and address of Mr. Doe, the stenographer inserts a proof-sheet pack 40 into the machine and advances it until its first writing line appears at the writing-line scale 15",which provides a longitudinal registration means, meanwhile guiding its leading edge 52 underneath. the bar 16 and in back of the collating-table sections 17, 18 and 19, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The paper-fingers 15 provide guiding and holding means for the proofsheet pack 40 while the statement-pack 39 and the l edgensheet 38 are being placed in the machine. The longitudinally-folded statement-pack 39 with its assembled carbon-pack 41 is next inserted into the machine and drawn around the platen to a po sition over the proof-sheet pack 40. The leading edge 45 of the assembled packs 39 and 41 is guided over the collating table formed by the two collating-table sections 17 and 18, and is drawn forward until the first writing line of the longitudinallytolded statement-pack 39 appears at the writing-line scale 15. The rightedge of assembled packs 39 and 41 is now held in place on the collating table by the lugs 36 on the side guide 35. The right-hand edges of the narrow carbon-sheets 41 were previously shaken into alignment with the righthand edges of the slightly wider work-sheets 89 which left a margin 39 as shown in Figure 9. This margin 39 is now engaged by the gripping pads 27 on the papenclamp 21, which is thrown to operative position to hold the longitudinallyfolded statement-pack 39 in place, as shown in Figuers 1 and 2 01"- the drawings.
The ledger-sheet 38 is now inserted and brought around the platen and over the longit .idinally-tolded statement-pack 39 to a position on a collating table -formed by the collating-table sections 17 and 19. As the ledger-sheet 38 is advanced to bring its first writing line to the writing-line scale 15 its right-hand edge is guided by the side guide 3'? on the table-section 19, and its left-hand edge is guided by the gage-bar 34 on the paper-clamp 21, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
It wi l be noted that the righthand portion of the ledger-sheet 38 extends considen ably beyond the right-hand edge of the staten'ient-pack 39, and upon this portion of the ledger-sheet are typed items of the account which it is desired to have appear only on the ledger-sheet and proof-pack.
The similar columns, which appear on the ledger-sheet 38, the longitudinally-folded statemenhpack 39 and the proof-sheet pack 40. are now all in registration as are the first writing lines of those sheets and packs, and, after bringing the feed-rolls 13 and 14 into operative position and releasing the paperclamp 21, the operator is ready to transcribe matter from Mr. Does order.
After completing the transcription of Mr. Does order, the stenographer places a mark in the margin 39" opposite the last typed line 54 of the transcribed matter, and then back-spaces the carriage to the right to enable her to write Mr. Does name in the er:- posed margin 40 of the top proof-sheet 40 opposite the last line of matter typen in the similar columns. The mark 53 placed in the margin 3? will disclose the last line of writing on the longitudinally-folded statementpack 39 without having to raise the top carbon-sheet 41" when the longitudinally-tolded statement-pack 39 is next taken from its the -tor transcribingadditional matter there on. Mr; Does name typed in the margin 40 of the proof-sheet 40 not only serves to locate the last line of writing on that sheet, which will necessarily be covered up when ill) lot)
dififerent ledger-sheets 38 and longitudinallyago thereon, but also provides means for easy identification of the items which appear on those writing" lines above the one on which the name is written. The stenographer then removes the ledger-sheet 3S and the long tudinally-folded statement-pack 39, together with the carbon-pack d1 assembled therein, but leaves the proof-sheet pack e0 inthe machine to'hc retained by the paper-fingers 15 in position to receive matter on its next writing line.
A ledger-sheet 38 and a longitudinallyfolded statement-pad: 39 hearing the name and address of another customer are. now inserted in the machine, in the same manner as were the similar sheet and pack of Mr. Doe. with their first writing lines in 1"Q{,;!S- tration with the ner't succeeding writing line from that on which Mr. Does name appears on the proof-sheet 40. The entire process Ina; now be repeated.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvei'nents may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, means for guiding and holding a work-sheet or pack in position thereon, gaging means for gaging a second work-sheet or pack to bring it into lateral registration with said first-named work-sheet or pack, said gaging means con prising a movable gage having a body with two upstanding ears formed thereon. a gageliar fastened to two arm-members movably mounted between said upstanding cars, a linger-piece for actuating said gage-bar, a spring to hold said gage-bar in eitheroperalive or inoperative position, and a stop to limit the movement of said gage-bar in inoperative direction.
2. In a typcwriting machine, in combina tion, a revoluble platen, means for guiding and holding a work-sheet or pack in position thereon, means for supporting a second work-sheet or pack in position on top of said first-named work-sheet or pack, said supporting means including a collating-table section having a body-portion pierced with a slot to permit transverse adjustment of said table-section, an upturned guide-portion having its forward or lower edge inclined to assist the passageof worksheets or packs thereover, and duplicate car or lug portions formed on said tip-turned guideportion and bent to a position parallel with said body-portion to form means for retaining a work-sheet or pack in close proximity to said body-portion and in a flattened pasition thereon.
3. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluhle platen, means for p iiidirlg and holding a work-sheet or pack, in position thereon, a collating device adjacent the front of the platen, comprisiu left table, a light table and an ii'itermediate table, means for guiding and securing the left margin of a. second work-sheet or pack upon said left table, means for guiding and holding" the right edge thereof upon. the intermediate table so that said second worksheet or pack lies over said first-mentioned work-sheet or pack, and means as. iaicd with said left table and said r t table for guiding, a third worksheet to position in superposed. relation to said first and said second mentioned \v "k-sheets or packs.
a In a typewriting machine, in combination. a revoluble platen, means for 3;uid1ng and holding a work-sheet or pack in position thereon, a collating device adjacent the front of the platen including a guide for the left edgy of a second worksheet or pack, a clamping device for holding said second work-sheet or pack in adjusted position with relation to said first-mentioned work-sheet or pack, means for guiding and holding the right edge of said second worksheet or pack, and means for guiding a third worksheet to position, so that the left portion thereof lies ovei said second work-sheet or pack while the right portion extends beyond the right edge of said last-named worksheet or pack and overlies the right-hand portion of said first-named work-sheet or pack.
In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, means for guiding and holding a work-sheet or pack in position thereon, a collating device adjacent the front of the platen including a guide and a clamp for guiding and holding the left edge of a second work-sheet or pack in adjusted position with relation to said firstanentioncd work-sheet or pack, a guide adjacent the intermediate portion of said collating dev ce and including retaining fingers for the right edge of said second work-sheet or pack, guide means carried by said clamp, and guide means carried upon the right-hand portion of said collating; device, both of said last-mentioned guide means co-operatiiur in guiding a third work-sheet to position in superposed relation to said second worksheet or pack.
6. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revolu'ole platen, means for guiding and holding a work-sheet or pack in position thereon, a collating device including a bar extending parallel with the platen, a left table, a right table, and an intermediate table, each adjustably secured. upon said bar and disposed adjacent the upper portion of the front of said platen, a guide and a clamp associated with said left table for guiding and holding the left portion of a second work-sheet or pack in adjusted position, a guide and retaining fingers carried by said intermediate table for holding the right-hand portion of said. second woiksheet or pack, a guide-piece fixed to said clamp for determining the position. of the left edge of a thire work-sheet, and a guide carried by said right table for determining the position of the right edge of said third work-sheet.
7. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a revoluble platen, means for guiding and holding a work-sheet or pack in position thereon, a collating device including a bar bridging said platen and extending in parallelism therewith, the ends of said bar being fixed to the carriage, a left table, a right table, and an intermediate table adjustably secured upon said bar and disposed adjacent the upper portion of the front of said platen, a guide carried by the outer edge of said left table for guiding the left edge of a second work-sheet or pack, a clamp pivoted upon said left table and including a paper-gripping member fitted with pads for clamping the left margin of said second work-sheet or pack against said left table, a guide carried by said intermediate table for the right edge of said second worksheet or pack and including retaining fingers therefor, a guide carried upon the free end of said clamp for guiding the left edge of a third worksheet, and a guide carried by the outer edge of said right table for guiding the right edge of said last-named sheet.
8. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, means for guiding and holding a Wide worksheet or pack in position thereon, means for holding a narrow work-sheet or pack in superposed relation to said first-named work-sheet or pack and substantially intermediate the side edges thereof, so as to provide an uncovered portion adjacent the left of said wide worksheet and an uncovered portion adjacent the right thereof, and means for guiding another work-sheet to position, so that the left portion thereof covers the major portion of the width of said narrow work-sheet while the right portion extends beyond the right edge of said narrow worksheet and over the uncovered portion adjacent the right of said wide worksheet.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a revoluble platen, a front table for supporting a work-sheet extending around said platen, and a paper-clamp including a pair of arms pivoted on said front table, a pad on each of said arms for pressing said sheet against said table, said pads being spaced apart to prevent skewing of said sheet, releasable resilient means for forcing said arms in a direction to press said pads against said work-sheet, and a side gage extending between and rigid with said arms for side-edge guiding a second work-sheet on said front table, superimposed over the first-mentioned work-sheet.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a revoluble platen, and a collating device for worksheets or packs extending around said platen, including a left front table and a right front table co-operating to support an outer worksheet and an inter mediate front table co-operating with said left table to support a narrower inner worksheet or pack, said intermediate table having its upper edge spaced below the upper edges of said left and right front tables to provide room for the manual gripping of said work-sheets or packs.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a revoluble platen, and a collating device for work-sheets or packs extending around said platen, including a left front table and a right front table co-operating to support an outer worksheet and an intermediate front table cooperating with said left table to support a narrower inner worksheet or pack, said intermediate table having its upper edge spaced below the upper edges of said left and right front tables to provide room. for the manual gripping of said work-sheets or packs, said left and in termediate front tables having left and right side-edge guides, respectively, for said inner work-sheet or pack and said right table having a right side-edge guide for said outer work-sheet.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a revoluble platen, and a collating device for work-sheets or packs extending around said platen, including a left table having a forwardly-directed flange, an intermediate table having a second for-- wardly-directed flange, said flanges co-opcrating to guide an inner worksheet or pack, a right table having a forwardly-directed flange, and a gage on said left table co-operating with the last-mentioned flange to guide an outer work-sheet, said lastmentioned flange being of greater depth than the second flange to effectually maintain engagement with said outer sheet.
13. In a typewriting machine, the C0111 bination of a revoluble platen, and a collating device for work-sheets or packs extending around said platen, including a left table having a forwardly-directed flange, an intermediate table having a second forwardly-directed flange, said flanges co-operating to guide an inner worksheet or pack, a right table having a forwardly-directed flange, and a gage on said left table oo-operating with the last-mentioned flange to guide an outer work-sheet, said last-mentioned flange being of greater depth than the second flange to effectually maintain engagement with said outer sheet, said second flange having a laterally-directed portion to prevent the escape of said inner work-sheet or pack.
