My invention relates to improvements in gas furnaces for heating purposes wherein a tortuous fluevoperates in conjunction with a combustion chamber and connections between said combustion chamber and the .upfper. portion of said 'flue' to facilitatea rapid upward movement ofk gases withinv said flue to vprevent condensation; and wherein `an air passage leading from the exterior of the furnace. through the flue operates to absorb and convey av portion of the heat from said fflue into the air heating passages of said furnace.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved gas heating furnace.
Another object is toprovide an improved device of the character described arranged tofacilitate a rapid upwardmovement of gases within'the `flue to prevent condensation.
A further object is to-provide new and improved means for'diirst, quickly creating a rapid upward movement of gases within the flue' to createor induce a high temperature; and then conduct a current of air from the exterior of the furnace, through a central passage within the .flue lto reduce the flue temperature-and carry a portion of the `heat from said flue back into the air-heating passages of Athe furnace. y
I accomplish these-and other `Vobjects by means of fthe device disclosed in the Idrawings' forming` a part of the present specification wherein Ylike characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said'specification-and drawings, and in whichtFig. l is a broken vertical sectional view of my improved gas furnace;

The present 'state of the art discloses gas furnaces having tortuous flues,- one of the purposes of which is to retard the upward movement of'gases through said fine in order to create a high temperature. The disadvantage ofsuch an arrangement is a high condensation Ithe resulting moisture of which very yhigh temperature is created within said fiue and a great portion of heat is thus wasted through the said fine.
overcome these disadvantages by first creating heat at a point within a tortuous flue which will rapidly facilitate and create an upward movement of the heated gases or products of combustionv to prevent condensation and consequent corrosion of the metal parts of the furnace5 and which will also create a high temperature within the fine, after which an air current is passed through a central pipe or passage within said flue to absorb and carry a portion of' the heat from said iiue into the air-heating passages of the furnace.

The annular flue or drum 5` is provided with a central air space or portion 7, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
The flue or drum 5 is provided with an annular baffle plate 8 arranged within the annular space thereof and in spaced rela` tion with the bottom and top of the said drum or fiue 5 and closed at the top of said p plate 8 with respect to the outer wall of the drum or fine 5 whereby concentric outer and inner fines are formed to provide a tortuous flue 9 through which the gases move downwardly in the outer concentric flue and upwardly within the inner concentric flue, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
Radial connections 11 conn-ect the upper portion of the combustion chamber 5 with the upper portion and outer portion of the tortuous flue 9 and adjacent the top of the baiiie plate 8 whereby the upper portion of the bafde plate 8 and the said tortuous flue 9 will be quickly heated by gases passing from said combustion chamber a to the tine drum 5 as indicated by the heavy curved arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The upper portion of the flue or drum 5 and above the bafiie plate 8 is provided with a iateral flue 12 extending to the exterior of the furnace 1 and is provided with a vent or draft opening 11 arranged to be opened or closed in varying degrees by means of a rotatably mounted sleeve 16 lalso provided with an opening 17 arranged to register' with the opening 1st and thereby permit the passage of air into the said lateral flue 12 and vertically disposed chimney fine 18 connected thereto.
Viithin the lateral liuc 12 I have provided an air pipe or passage 19 extending throughout the entire length of the lateral flue 12 and having an outer ventor openino' 21 controlled by means of a suitable damp-er 22, the inner end of said pipe or passage 19 terminating within the central cylindrical air space or core 7 of the inner fiue drum 5, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings, in order that a draft'of cold air may be drawn inwardly through said pipe or passage 19 by the upward movement or suction of heated air within the air passages 6 of the furnace 1, and thereby absorb and convey a portion of the heat from the combusted gases moving through the fine into the interior of the furnace 1.
In the bottom front portion of the combustion chamber 4t I have provided a suitable door or opening 23 through which eX- tends a preferably annular gas burner 24 which rests on the bottom of said combustion chamber 4:.
This burner 24 is provided with a plurality of holes or jets 26 and is made preferably in two parts to facilitate introduction and manufacture of the parts. In order to insure ignition of both parts from a double pilot burner 27 I have provided an intercommunicating burner 28 having a plurality of et openings 29 in the upper portion thereof, said intercommunicating burner 28 connecting at both ends with both portions of the double burner, so that if, for any reason, the pilot 27 should light one side only of the double burner 24 the flame will be communicated, by means of said intercommunieating burner 28, to the other side of said double burner 2a and thereby prevent an explosion.
In operation, assuming that the furnace is cold, when the burner 2li is lighted it will immediately heat the combustion chamber 4, which in turn will heat the surrounding air passages 6, and the heated products of coinbustion will pass upwardly through the upper portion of said combustion chamber a and through the, radial connections 1l and be directed onto the upper portion of the batife plate 8 and rapidly heat the same which heat will be quickly communicated to the air within the upper portion of the tortuous flue as represented by the inner concentric flue 9. The heating of the air at this point will immediately tend to facilitate and produce an upward movement of air within the tortuous fine or passage 9, uniformly heating the metal drums and parts of the furnace and preventing the formation of moisture through condensation, instead of retarding the upward movement of said combusted gases as in the present state of the art.
This upward movement of the combusted gases will immediately produce a high teinperature within the fiue and induce a powerful draft which will tend to carry considerable heat up the flue. To save this heat and at the same time to reduce the temperature of the flue, the damper 22 is moved to uncover the opening 21 in the outer end of the air pipe 19 within the lateral flue 12. As the inwardly directed current of air, which has been induced by the rising of the heated air within the furnace 1 and air passages 6 thereof, comes in contact with the heated pipe or air passage 19, a portion of the heat of said pipe 19 will be absorbed and carried by said air current into the said air passages 6 within the furnace.
If it is desired to still further reduce the upward draft through the entire flue of the furnace the same may Ibe accomplished by rotating the sleeve 1G the required amount` to uncover the opening 14 within the lateral fiue 12 thereby admitting cold air into said flue, which will ret-ard the upward movement of gases within the tortuous flue and combustion chamber 4.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved gas furnace having a tortuous flue passage arranged to facilitate an upward movement of gases therethrough to quickly heat said flue and thereby obviate condensation and its resulting corrosion.
Itis also obvious that I have provided improved means for absorbing and carrying a portion of the heat from the chimney flue baci; into the furnace thereby reducing the temperature of the chimney flue of the furnace, as well means for regulating the temperature ofl said flue and also the degree of heat of the heated airwith'in the air-heating passages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. vIn a gas furnace, the combination with a combustion chamber of a tortuous lflue; and means connecting the upper portion'of said combustion-chamber with the upper portion of said tortuous flue whereby `heat from said combustion chamber may be directed against said upper `portion of said tortuous flue to facilitate upward movement of gases within said flue; air passages surrounding the combustion chamber and tortuous flue for conducting air to be heated; and means arranged within the upper portion of the flue for conveying an air current from a point eXteriorly of the furnace to the said air passages to absorb heat from said flue; and means for regulating controlling and adjusting air current.

In a gas furnace, the combination with a combustionchamber of a tortuous lue; means connecting the u per portion of the combustion chamber wit the upper portion of the tortuous flue whereby heat from said combustion chamber may be directed against said upper portion of said flue to facilitate upward movement of gases therein; air passages surrounding the combustion chamber and tortuous llue for conducting air to be heated; means arranged within the upper portion of the flue for conveying an air current from a point extcriorly of sai-d furnace to said air passages to absorb heat from said flue; means for retarding upward movement of gases within the flue; and means for regulating, adjusting and controlling sait air current.
In a gas furnace, the combination with an annular combustion chamber of an annular tortuous flue arranged within said annular combustion chamber to provide. annular air passages between and surrounding said combustion chamber and flue; connections between the upper portion of said annular combustion chamber and the upper portion of the tortuous flue and intercepting an annular air passage between said chamber and line and arranged to direct heat from said upper portion of the chamber to the upper' port-ion of the tortuous flue to facilitate upward movement of gases within said flue; means for admitting air into the upper portion of the flue to regulate and control said upward movement of gases; means for conveying an air current from a point exteriorly ol" said furnace through the upper portion of the flue and into the annular air passages to absorb heat from said flue; and means for regulating and controlling said air current.

In a gas furnace, the combination of an outer annular drum arranged to form a combustion chamber; an inner annular drum having a central air passage and arranged within the first mentioned drum to form an annular flue; an annular baille plate arranged within the annular llue and arranged in spaced relation with the bottom of said annular flue and also arrangedto form inner and outer parallel flues within said drum, said battle plate being closed at the top thereof with respect to the outer parallel flue whereby gases may be directed downwardly in said outer flue and upwardly within said inner flue; and connections between the outer combustion chamber and the outer parallel flue and near the top of the ballle plate whereby heat from said combustion chamber will be directed against the top of said baille plate to quickly heat and thereby facilitate upward movement of gases within the inner parallel flue; a lateral flue connected to the upper end of the inner parallel flue; and an air pipe mounted within said lateral flue and connected with the inside of the inner annular drum to absorb and carry heat from said lateral flue into central air passage of said inner annular drum whereby a portion of heat from said lateral flue may be carried into the interior of the furnace.

In a gas furnace, the combination of an outer annular drum arranged to form a combustion chamber; an drum having a central air passage and arranged within the first mentioned drum to form an annular flue; an annular balileplate arranged within the annular flue and arranged in spaced relation with the bottom of said annular flue and also arranged to form inner and outer parallel flues within said drum, said baille plate being closed at the top thereof with respect to the outer parallel flue whereby gases may be directed inner annular downwardly in said outer flue and upwardly Within said inner `flue; and connections between the outer combustion Chamber and the outer parallel flue and near the top of the baille plate whereby heat from said coinbustion chamber will be directed against the top of said bailie plate to quickly heat and thereby facilitate upward movement of gases within the inner parallel flue; a lateral flue cennected to the upper end of the inner pa 'allel flue; and an air pipe mounted Within said lateral flueand connected with the inside of the inner annular druin to ab- Sorb and carry heat from said lateral flue into the central air passage of said inner annular drum whereby a portion of heat frein said lateral flue may be carried into the interior of the furnace; means for regulating and controlling the movement ol: gases through saidflue; and ineans ior con* trolling and regulating the passage of air through the lair pipe Within the lateral flue.
