UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RAOUL J'. GRUENBERG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FIRE-RESISTANT FIBER ROOFING TILE.
Application filed November 24, 1923.
This invention relates to a fire resistant roof tile and it and strong tile like the ordinary s object is to produce a light which will look substantially fired tile without its 5 weight and with equal durability and waterproof qualities.
Another object of the invention is duc a tile which Will be initially so a to avoid any to proformed tendency to flatten out after it has been placed in position on the root.
In attaining fibrous materia these objects a tire resistant l of the required lightness is found in rice hulls which form the base of the tile produced. These hulls are very light and contain about 18% ash which makes them 'burn' with great difliculty.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodim 1n the accompa same reference numeral ent of the invention is shown nying drawings in which the is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.
Fig. l is a perspective view of of tile,
Fig. 2 is a one form perspective view of another form of tile produced.
The numeral 1 indicates a half round tile which is a common form produced, while 2 indicates the convex sidand 3 the concave side of an S-shaped tile which may be used instead of the shape shown in Fig. 1.
The tile consists of a mixture of asphalt, rice hulls fibrous material and mineral matter all thoroughly mixed and formed into the shapes desired.
After being formed, to a pressure of several square inch to the tiles are subject hundred pounds per properly solidify the mass,
and after such pressure has been applied they are ready dry as the case to be piled up to cool or to may be, but in any event the Serial No. 676,851.
forming initially brings the material to the shape indicated hardened there is so that when completely no tendency for the tiles to flatten out.
The fibrous materials used may be paper fiber, asbestos fiber or mineral wool and a filling of added, but
broken stone or brick may be the rice hulls and asphalt must alwavs be in sufiicient quantity to give the other materials going into the product the necessary adhesion and lightness to make an acceptable product.
The particular materials product are specifically claimed in plication for patent serial number forming this an ap- 676,850
filed of even date herewith, and are not claimed herein. The tiles may also be formed in an ordinary clay tile machine it great pressure is appiied thereto.
lVhat I claim is as follows, but modifications may be made in carrying out the invention shown in the drawings and in the above particularly described form thereof,
within the fined I claim purview of the invention, as deby the annexed claims.
of asphalt,
rice hulls, fibrous material and mineral matter, moulded under heavy pressure to form a tile.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th ,day of November A. D.,
RAOUL J. GRUENBERG.
