POLISHING TOOL.
Application filed April 6, 1525, Serial No.
The present invention relates to a tool to be used in polishing metals and provided with polishing members in the shape of rods carried by a head and placed side by side round said head. This polishing tool is chiefly characterized by therods being retained in the head by means of devices placed at or near one end of the reds while the polishing members are at the other ends of the same. The principal purpose of the invention is that that part of the tool by which the polishing work is to be effected may have a comparativel; small diameter and that the polishing work may be effect ed by a great number polishing members.
The following is a dei'acription 01" an embodiment of my invention, reference being .n'iade to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the polishing tool, partly in section. and
Figure 2 an end view of the same with some of the polishing members removed.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the rear end of L rod shown in its place in the head.
The tool consists of a preferably cylindrical head comprising a core 1 having two front-flanges Q, 3 and a rear flange il, which flanges are provided with grooves 5 for the polishing rods 6 so that these latter when placed in the grooves may be positioned in the longitudinal direction of the core. hen all the rods are in place round the core the latter is introduced together with the rods in a socket- 7 provided at its front end with a flange 8 which, when the core is in its place in the socket, preferably is opposite the flange 2 and is provided with a groove 9 0p posite each groove 5 in the flange 2, so that each rod will be kept by these grooves in a radial plane in the head. Each rod is provided with a lug 10 facing the core and placed between the flanges 2 and 3, said lug having its end resting against the core and being of about the same width as the distance between the flanges, whereby the rod is prevented from being displaced longitudinally. The lug 10 is of such a height that the rod will not come in contact with the bottom or" the groove 5 but is free to oscillate somewhat about the extreme end of the lug as fulcrum. I In order that the outer end of the rod which carries the polishing menr ber 11 which may be of any suitable shape, may liently press againstthe ebje to he pol; it each rod is at some a e 21,177, and in Sweden September 14, 1923.
actuated by a spring, for instance a spring 12;, housed in a bore in a flange 13 on the socket 7 and having its one end resting against the rod while its other end abuts a screw 14 threaded in the bore and by means ot'wliicli the tension of the spring may be adjusted.
The socket 7 is retained in its place on the core 1 by means of a member 15 threaded on an extension 16 projecting from the core through an opening in the bottom of the socket 7. The member 15 is of sullicient size to receive the end of the spindle 17 which imparts movement to the tool when it is to be used. This spindle has preferably a retating movement in which case the polish ing members 11 on all the rods, one after the other, act upon the object to be polished, but the spindle may also, if desired, have a reciprocating movement in its transverse direction in which case the polishing member or members of the tool that are particularly desired to be used may be directed against the object to be polished.
It is evident that it is possible to exchange the rods mounted in the head. A change may be made by removing the springs 12 and unscrewing the screw 16 from the member 15 when the core may be drawn out of the socket 7 and other rods inserted.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a polishing tool, the combination of a core, polishing rods extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said core and pivotally supported intermediate their ends on said core, and means for yieldingly forcing the inner ends of the rods towards the core.
2. In a polishing tool, the combination of a core, polishing rods extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said core and pivotally supported intermediate their ends on said core, a socket in which said core is received, and means carried by the socket for yieldingly forcing the inner ends of the rods towards the core.
3. In a polishing tool, the combination of a core having parallel spaced flanges at one end thereof, polishing rods having intermediate lugs received between said flanges and serving as fulcrums for said lugs, and means for yieldin ly forcing the inner ends of the rods townrc s the core a. In. a polishing a core having parallel space flanges at its front end and a flange at its rear end, polishing rods having their rear ends insertible in said rear flange and having intermediate lugs received between said spaced flanges, and means for yieldingly forcing the inner ends of the rods towards the core.
In a polishing tool, the combination with the elements claimed in claim 3, of a socket in which said core is received, and an interior flange on said socket alined With one of the flanges on the core, the polishing rods extending between said flanges outwardly beyond the core and socket.
6. In a polishing tool of the character described, the combination of a head comprising a peripherally grooved core and a socket for removably receiving the -core,-a plurality of rods in said grooves and constituting levers having fulcrums intermediate their ends and bearing against the core, said rods having forward projecting ends constituting polishing members, and adjustable spring means carried by the socket for yieldably retaining the rear ends of the rods against the core.
7. In a polishing tool of the character described, the oombination of a head comprising a grooved core and a socket therefor having a flange, a plurality of polishing rods carried at their rear ends Within said grooves, and a plurality of adjustable springs carried by said flange for yieldably retaining said rear ends against the core.
8. In a polishing tool of the character described, the combination of a head comprising a grooved core and a socket therefor having a flange, a plurality of polishingrods carried at their rear ends Within said grooves, a plurality of coil springs housed in said flange and yieldably retaining said rear ends against the core, and adjustable screws bearing against the springs for altering their tension.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
J OHAN WALFRID JOHANSSON.
