Description
"STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH MCORACKEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SIZIN Gr HAT-B ODIES.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 15,929', dated October 21, 1856.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be tknown that I, JOSEPH MoORAoKEN, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Working or Sizing Hat- Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in working or sizing the hat body upon an elastic hollow cylindrical roller of india rubber or other elastic substance upon which the roll of felt or hat body is worked or sized while passing through the machine.
As a convenient and cheap material I prefer making 4the cylindrical rollers out of india rubber hose pipe of any suitable size, and for the purpose of facilitating the discharge of the water from the inner folds of the felt I propose to havethe sides of the cylindrical roller perforated with a series of holes, so that the water may work through them into the hollow of the roller, and thereby let the water discharge, so as t-o dry out the roll of felt more rapidly to full or size it up; But to describe my invention more particularly I will refer to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, the same letters of reference wherever they occur referring to like parts.
`Figure 1, is a perspective view of a perforated elasticcylindrical roller. Fig. 2, is a representation of a felt hat body. Fig. 3, is a representation of the cylindrical roller, having a roll of felt upon it.
Letter A, is a hollow cylindrical roller, made of vulcanized india rubber hose pipe. Through its sides are a series of perforations B. The object of these perforations is to allow the water of the interior folds of the felt to escape rapidly; and of the elastic hollow roller, to sustain a perfect roll in the felt, and yet elastic enough to give the roll of felt in passing through the `machine. an easy working motion so as tosize up the most delicate felt textures.
Letter C, represents a hat body rolled upon the elastic cylindrical roller, and D, an outstretched hat body as seen before being rolled up.
In sizing hat bodies several are rolled upon the roller at one time, and according to the work to be given to it, are changed to rollers of various sizes, that is, for the first working of the hat body smallcylindrical rollers are used, but toward the last part of the sizing operation when it is desirable to harden up the felt, a large roller is used; the object however in all cases being the same, that is, aording an elastic pressure to sustain the roll of felt under the outside rolling and pressing operation while passing through the machine.
It will be obvious that various modications may be made of my invention. I therefore do not wish to confine myself to the precise manner of making the india rubber elastic cylindrical roller, but desire the privilege of substituting any equivalent device for accomplishing the object hereinbefore set forth.
Having now described my invention and its operation I will proceed to set forth what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States.
What I claim and desire to secure is- The use of the india rubber or other elastic perforated cylindrical roller, for working or sizing hat bodies upon when constructed in the manner, and operated in the mode substantially hereinbefore set forth.
JOSEPH MCORAOKEN.
