Description

July 13', 1926. 1,592,780
s.PRuiENsK| RAILWAY CAR BRAKE Filed March 5, 1925 Patented July 13, 1926.
UNITED STATES STEPHAN PRUZENSKI, F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
RAILWAY-CAR BRAKE.
Application filed March 5, 1925. Serial No. 13,194.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railway car brakes and particularly to the type embodying a removable braking face plate that is interlockingly associated with a brake head or body and has for one of its objects to provide novel form of locking connection between the head and face plate.
A further object of the invention is to provide a car brake wherein a face plate or shoe is removably connected to a braking head with the connecting device between the shoe and head being in the form of a tensioned pin or key having the operating end thereof confined in a cutaway portion in the head.
A still further objectof the invention is to provide a novel mounting for the tensioned pin that establishes the interlocking connection between the brake head and shoe wherein a tubular housing threaded into the brake head encloses the tensioned key.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of 5 the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. I
In the drawing wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure l is a side elevational view of a railway car brake constructed in accordance with the present invention, a portion of a car wheel being illustrated by dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the brake showing the supporting rods therefor.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the interlocking connection between the brake head and removable brake face or shoe with the tensioned pin holding the parts in engagement.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on line IVIV of Fig. 3, showing the angle extension end of the locking pin or key to facilitate operation thereof,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the tensioned locking key and illustrating by dotted lines, one end thereof bent to form a gripping handle.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a rail Way brake wherein the brake head 1 is sup ported by the cross bar 2 that may be Stilt-"- ably braced by the angle rod 3.
A braking face or shoe 4 is detachably connected to the inner face of the brake head 1 and the connection between the brake head and shoe includes the formation of a block projection 5 upon the inner face of the brake head'l intermediate the ends thereofas clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 and further the brake head, a tensioned locking pin or key is associated with the head block 5 and the brake shoe lug 7, one side of the block 5 that opens into one of the pockets 8 having a threaded opening therein that receives the externally threaded sleeve or housing 9 that is closed at its outer end by the centrally apertured boss 10 while the bottom wall of the opening that receives the housing 9 is provided with an opening that communicates with the socket 6. A key 11 of the type illustrated in detail in Fig. 5 and having diametrically opposite lug projections 12 adjacent the inner end thereof is slidably mounted in the housing 9 with the upper end thereof slidably projecting through the apertured boss 10 and bent at right angles thereto as at 13 to form a handle grip, the inner locking end of the key 11 passing through the opening in the inner end of the housing 9 and through the opening 14 in the brake shoe lug 7 with the terminal end thereof received in the depression 15 formed in the block 5 at the opposite side of the brake shoe lug 7. A coil spring 16 surrounds the locking key 11 between the boss 10 and the opposite lugs 12 for forcing the operative end of the looking key in a direction to project the same through the opening in the brake shoe lug 7 as shown in Fig. 8.
It will be noted that the handle grip 13 of the locking key is confined within one of the pockets 8 so that protection is provided therefor to prevent accidental displacement thereof. The threaded sleeve 9 provides a safe housing for the locking key 11 and is removable from the block 5 to permit free access to the leaking key and spring for purposes or"- repair or the like. I The engagmg ends of the brake head and shoe have interlocking faces and the locking key connection between the ends of tlre headwandshoe provide a rigid mounting for the brake shoe.
While there 1s herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present 'in-.
vention, it is nevertheless to be understood that: minor changes may be made therein *ithout'departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed;
lVhat is claimed is 1. In a Wheel brake, a head, a shoe deinterengaging projections; said key also having a right angular upper end'i'or manipulatingsaid key, and said housing and key beingremovable from said head projection.
2. In a Wheelbrake, a head, a shoe detachably connected to the head and said connection includinginterengaging projections on the head and shoe, a removable housing threaded into the uppermost of the projections of said head, a key slidable in the housing and' having opposite lugs remote from the operative end 01": the ;key extending through the projections, and a coil spring surrounding the key between the lugs and outer end ofthe housing, said key having an outwardly directed angula r manipulating handle at its upper end above said housing.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
