AUTO CUSHION BENCH.

This invention relates to an attachment for a motor vehicle, the general object of the invention being to provide means where by a bench can beformed from a seat cushion a motor vehicle with means for holding the attachment in collapsed condition under the seat cushion when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to make the device adiustable so that it can be attached to different sizes of seat cushions.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, i1-
5 lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a sectional view through a seat cushion showing the attachment in use.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of Fig ure 1.
Figure 3 is an end view with parts of the cushion broken away.
Figure 4 is a View similar to- Figure 1 but showin the device in folded condition and the seat cushion placed in an automobile.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view with the device in folded position.
Figure 6 is a view of one of the side members of the device.
Figure 7 is a View of one of the legs with parts in section.
In these views 1 indicates a pair of side members which are connected together by the end bars 2 which are rotatably mounted in the side members. Each side member is composed of a pair of flat strips 3 which have eyes at their outer ends for receiving the end bars and which have their inner ends offset by bending them twice at right angles to provide the perforated seats 4, each of which is adapted to rest against the opposite member and to be bolted thereto by the bolts 5 which pass through the perforation in the seat and through any one of a number of perforations 6 in the member so that the side members are adjustable as to their length. The end bars are also adjustable as to their length by each being formed of two parts 7, the inner ends of 1924. Serial No. 712,037.
the portions being flattened and overlapping each other and being bolted together by the bolts 8, the parts having a plurality of holes therein for engagement by the bolts. The side members are also adjustably connected together by the overlapping cross pie ccsfi which are connected together by the bolts 10", the cross pieces being provided with a plurality of holesfor receiving the bolts. A pair of U-shaped leg members 11, having eye s at their-upper ends for engaging the cross bars 7, are also adjustable as to their width by each being formed in two sections with the bight of the sections telescoping, as shown at 12. The
bight has its central part oifset by bend- 7 ing the two parts twice at right angles so as to form a pair of ground engaging portions 13 which are spaced apart. This arrangement permits the bench to be set on uneven ground. Braces 14 are connected with the parts 13 and the upper ends of the braces 1a are provided with teeth 15 for engaging notches 16 on the side members for holding the legs in upright position and each pair of braces is adjustably connected together by the overlapping cross pieces 17 which are provided with a plurality of holes 18, any pair of which is adapted to receive a bolt 20. A tongue 21 is formed on'one cross piece for engaging the other cross piece to limit swinging movement of the cross pieces in one direction but permitting this move ment of the cross piece in another direction so that the upper ends of the braces 14- can be moved towards each other to enable the upper ends to be placed under the side pieces, as shown in Figure 5, when the legs are swung upwardly as shown in Figures 4 and 5. The parts are held in this folded position by the rotatable clips 2 on the side pieces being turned to engage the legs. The upper member 3 of each side member is adapted to be bolted'or otherwise fastened to a part of the seat cushion A so that the device will be fastened to the under side of the cushion, as shown in the drawings.

pair oi longitudinal adjustable side membcrs connected therewith, adjustable end bars rotatably connected with the ends of the side members, U-shaped leg portions having their ends connected with the bars the bight portion of each leg member having its central part offset forming ground engaging portions upon opposite sides of the big-ht portion, said side members having notches therein, brace members having pivotal connections with the ground engaging portions of the leg members and having their other ends formed with teeth for engagementwith the notches in the side members to retain the leg members in an upright position and adjustable overlapping cross pieces connecting said brace members.
