VANITY BOX OF WATCHCASE TYPE.

Application filed September This invention relates to vanity boxes and has special reference to a box for containing face powder, rouge and the like such boxes commonly known as compacts, of watch case type.

One object of the invention'is to improve the general construction of the compact.

A second object of the invention is to provide a novel hinge arrangement for boxes of this class.

A third object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangementof the rouge box and its cover.

A fourth important object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the rouge boxin the outer case.

A fifth important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of snap for holding the rouge box cover closed.

\Vith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.

ing upwardly from this bead. At one point of its periphery, this flange 12 is extended upwardly as at 13, and rolled as at 14 to form a tube wherethrough passes the straight portion of a hinge wire 15 which extends around beneath the shoulder 16 of the top 17. This top has a flange 18 which, when top is closed on the bottom, fits within the flange 12. The hinge wire 15 extends each way from the flange about quarter way around the cover and there has an outwardly bent end 19 which passes through a suitable aperture 20 formed in the top of cover 17 just below the shoulder 16; lVith this arrangement the hinge wire reinforces that portion of the cover adjacent the hinge. Seated in the body 10 is the rouge box and this consists of a sheet of metal stamped to provide a central portion 21 of general cylindrical shape, the portion being slightly shouldered as at 22 to form retaining means for a spring ring 23, which latter serves to hold the rouge pad in position. Around this central portion is an outer wall 24 having at intervals upwardly extending portions 25 which there extend up to the groove formed by the bead 11 and are bent outwardly to fit in said groove and retain the rouge box in place. These portions may also be punched out as at 26 from the inside of the box so as to lock with the body 10 and prevent rotation of the rouge box. At one side of the rouge box the outer flange 24 is extended upwardly and rolled as at 27 to form hinge lugs. The rouge box top consists of a plate of metal 28 which is bent over to retain a bezel 29 which holds a mirror 30 in position. One portion of this bezel is rolled as at 31 to form a complementary part of the cover hinge, an ordinary wire pintle be ing used to connect the parts 27 and 31. Opposite the hinge of the rouge box the outer flange 24; is provided with a pair of spring clips 32 which are so spaced as to readily permit the thumb nail to be inserted between them and the rouge box top to open such box and it is to be noted that one of the extensions 25 is, as shown in Figure 8 located between these two spring tongues to hold the latter firmly in position in the body 10.

\Vith this construction it will be obvious that the box may be made of very thin metal while the hinge arrang m nt is of we strength and the box so reinforced that collapse or other injury will not take place in ordinary use.

There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing frointhe spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invent-ion, what is claimed as new, is:

1. In a box of the class described, a box body having a peripheral wall provid d with a groove on the interior extending around the wall parallelto the edge,-a rouge receptacle having an annular outer wall itting againstthe peripheral wall or" the box body and provided with upwardly extend ing portions having their endsengaged in said groove to retain the rouge receptacle in place, said rouge receptacle having an inner annular wall forming a substantially cylindrical rouge pocket.

2. In a box of the class described, a box body having a. peripheral wall provided with a groove on the interior extending around the wall parallel to the edge, a. rouge receptacle having an annular outer wall fitting against the peripheral wall of the box body and provided with upwardly extending portions having their ends engaged in said groove to retain the rouge receptacle in place, said rouge receptacle having an inner annular all forming a substantially cylindrical rouge pocket, a cover for said rouge pocket hinged to the outer wall of the rouge receptacle, and cover holding spring lingers disposed on said outer wall opposite the hinge.

3. In a box of the class described, a box body having a peripheral wall provided with a groove on the interior extending around the wall parallel to the edge, a rouge receptacle having an annular outer wall fitting againstthe-peripheral wall of the box body and provided with upwardly extending portions having their ends engaged in said groove to retain the rouge'receptacle in place, said rouge receptacle having an'inuer annular wall forming a substantially cylindrical rouge pocket, aeover for said rouge pocket hinged to the outer wall of the rouge receptacle, and cover holding spring fingers disposed on said outer wall opposite the hinge, one of said upwardly extending port ons of the outer wall being positioned between said spring lingers to prevent rotation of the rouge receptacle.
