THE GRAPHIO COJHU'YO-LITPLBSKQ-l Pia" PLACLNAR UNITED STATEs PATENT -0FFICE,
EVELYN F. FRENCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-RESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,254, dated February 2, 1875; application filed December 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVELYN F. FRENCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting the Hand of an Accountant, or othersin posting or writing up books at or near the bottom of their pages and I dohereby declare that the following specification taken in connection with the drawings furnished is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention consists in constructing a handrest for book-keepers use that may be adapted to the various purposes for which it may be desirable to employ the same, being the embodiment of cheapness, strength, durability, and lightness, and one that may be used without clamping to the desk or book.
Figure 1, a perspective view of my invention appended to a book, showing its position in practice 5 Fig. 2, edge view of my improved hand-rest. Fig. 3 represents a modification with a lid forming a box in the hollow end of the rest.
In the construction of my improved handrest I employ thin materials or veneer, either in single thickness or in layers glued together, for the purpose of adding all possible strength, and at the same time maintain the requisite degree of lightness, and as an additional security against splitting. I would remark, however, that the grain or fibers of the difi'erent layers should cross each other as far as it may be possible, as this increases the strength of the device and prevents to a great degree warping.
The dimensions of my invention may be varied as the books may require, although the medium width may be said to be about eight inches, the length from twelve to eighteen inches subject to be deviated from according to the requirements of the trade or consumers.
Upon referring to the drawing, it will be observed that one end of the device serving as the support for the hand is formed hollow, which is accomplished by bending, leaving a hollow space, the parts being joined by interposing a piece between and. gluing or otherwise securing the parts together.
As the drawings exhibit suitable proportions of parts with details of its construction further description will be considered as unnecessary. Its application and use will also be readily understood from the illustration referred to.
The object of my invention is to insure the production of a serviceable, cheap, light, and convenientarticle devoid of s uperfluous weight, which otherwise makes such rests 'objectiona ble. By its lightness I am enabled to dispense with the use of the clamping process, thereby making it a convenient device to be applied to all purposes of a nature like the posting or writing up of the lower parts of pages in books, 850.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States ofAmerica, is
As a new article of manufacture the hereiu-described hand-rest, consisting of a tongue and hollow base, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
