Sash-Holder.
No.159Q212.
Patented Jan. 26, 1875.
Inventor:
G RkPHIGCO. PHOTO U THIN) B-"H PARK FLAG UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
HENRY G. PERRY, OF WILKESBARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,212, dated January 26, 1875; application filed December 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. PERRY, of the city of Wilkesbarre, in the count-y of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mode of Securing, Holding, and Looking Window-Sashes and I declare thefollowing to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being made to the drawings as a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements'in sash-holders. It consists in a vertical presserbar having a central rib or tongue, the latter extending into a groove cut or formed by a metallic box or case fixed in a vertical mortise in the side bar of the sash, together with a pitman and series of cams connecting with, and for the purpose of forcing and carrying, the presser-bar vertically against the windowframe, and suitable connecting-levers with pawl and ratchet for operating and locking the device.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are verticalsectional views of a window-sash with my device attached, and Fig. 3 is a view of the metallic box or case and the presser-bar.
a is the window-frame. b is a portion of the side bar of a window-sash. c is a vertical mortise cut in the edge of the bar 1), next frame a. d is a cross or horizontal mortise cut through the bar 6, and connects with the upper end of the mortise c. e is the box or case, made to exactly fit the mortise c, and
so as to provide the groove or channel 6 The bottom or rear plate of the box is made shorter than the side plates, leaving open space, 6 the width of the cross-mortise d, and the side plates are widened, and extend into said mortise d, to afford facilities for pivoting the lever hereinafter described. f is the presser-bar, composed of the friction or looking plate f and the rib or tongue f The tongue f fits into the channel 0, and prevents the presser-bar from wabbling, and keeps the plate f at all times parallel with the side of the frame a in the operation of locking the sash. g are a series of oval recesses, formed one half in the bottom or rear plate of the box 6, and the other half in the tongue f and are constructed so as to have a slight inclination toward the frame a. h are a series of cams placed in the recesses 9. They fit loosely, and in the operation of the device turn outward, and carry the bar fin a vertical line against the frame a. 'i is a pitman placed in the groove or channel 0. It rests on the top of the presser-bar f, and extends nearly to the top of the cross-mortise d. k is a lever, pivoted near itscenter to the box 6. One end rests on the top of the pitman i. The other end extends to and rests on the end of the operating-lever hereinafter described. Its length is slightly less than the width of the sash-bar b. l is a plate, bent over the corner of the sash, and covering the end of the mortise d. On its upper portion is constructed the ratchet m. n is a bent lever, by which the device is operated. It is pivoted to the plate I, and extends under the outer end of the pivoted lever k. 0 is a pawl attached to the lever n. It catches in the ratchet m.
To operate the device the outer end of the lever n is pressed down. on the pivoted lever 70, and this latter on the pitman i, which forces downward the presserbar f. The presser-bar acting on the cams h,
the latter turn outward or toward the frame a, and carry the former in a vertical line against the frame.
By increased pressure on the lover a the presser-bar may be wedged to any degree of tightness between the cams and frame.
The pawl 0, engaging in the ratchet m, will hold the device locked.
By releasing the pawl, and removing the pressure from the lever n, the weight of the sash will force the bar fagainst the box e and unlock the sash.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. The combination of the lever n with the presser-bar f by means of the pivoted lever k and pitman i, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
2. The sash-holder consisting of the presserbar f, cams h, pitman i, levers k and a, pawl 0, and ratchet m, when arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY O. PERRY. Witnesses:
