Pursuant to my invention, the shell of wood or other s-uitablekmaterial issevered along theoutline'sof cutting and scoring by;

It will be observed from Fig. 3 that the group of cutting and scoring rules corresponding to each individual blank is duplicated lengthwise of the cylinder and also circumferentially of the cylinder 20 for the purpose of attaining a maximum number of groups of cutting and scoring rules about the periphery of the cylinder 20 and to minimize the waste of the web. The cutting rules are provided with sharpened edges serving as knives in coaetion with the impression cylinder 21, and extend from the axis of the cylinder 20 radially sufliciently to fully sever the web. whereas the scoring rules are of a. construction similar to the cutting rules, but of lesser radial extension relative to the axis of the cylinder 20. In Fig. 3, the cut outline of the blank is illustrated in full outline as indicated at 33 and the scoring outline is illustrated in (lash outline as indicated at 3%. The printing 35 is varied, as will be understood.
A preferred method of forming the strips 30 of the cutting and scoring shell 22 is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the subject matter of which forms a separate application filed by me under date of January 31st, 1925, Serial No. 6,128, bearing the title of Method and means of forming cutting and scoring units. In general, the lines of cutting of the unit 22 are substantially radial relative to the center of the turtle 23, that is, to the axis of the cylinder 20. Comparing Fig. 6 with Fig. 3, the cutting rule 36 provides for the particular line of cutting 37 of a blank 29. It will be noted that the cutting rule 36 is positioned against the face 38, see Fig. (3, of a strip 30. As is indicated in Fig. 6, the body portion of each cutting rule is of substantial thickness; the body portions of the cutting rules are of substantially uniform thickness. The scoring rules are of similar uniform thickness but their knife edges are of lesser radial height and rounded or relatively dull. Isually the rules are selected of lengths of the respective straight-line or rectilinear portions of the outline of the blank and of the corners and of the curved portions of the outline of the blank.
As one convenient procedure of cutting the strip 30 of the cutting and scoring shell 22, I employed the device illustrated in Fig. I and comprising an endless band saw (i guided and driven in the usual manner and passing through the slot 61 extending through the fixed standard 62 of the device. The standard 62 is supported at its lower end on a bench or table provided with a slot similar to the aforesaid slot. (31. In a similar manner, the remainder of the cutting of the ifiarkedoutline 70 is carried out by similar operations.
By the provision of the adjustable bearings 24, 24 of the cutting and scoring cylinder 20 and the corresponding adjustable bearings 28 for the impression cylinder 21, each set of combined turtle 23 and cutting and scoring shell 22 of the different diameters is accommodated on the same press and the straight line travel of the printed web 17 provided for. For any cutting and scoring cylinder 20 of a given diameter, a set of turtles of varying thicknesses and uniform inner diameters are provided respectively for the made-up cutting and scoring shells 22 of varying outer diameters.
Preferably, the press is provided with suitable gearing for interconnecting the cutting and scoring unit with its impression cylinder and controlled by the hand wheel 80, see Figs. 1 and 2, for advancing or retarding the cutting and scoring cylinder 20 relative to the printing or other impression on the web for registering purposes. In a similar manner, the printing or off-set couple or couples are interconnected by gearing, controlled by the hand wheel 81 for advancing or retarding the printing or other impression lengthwise of the web for corresponding registering purposes.
From the above, it will appear that my invention provides for the assembly of cut ting or scoring units or both on cylindrical or other arcuate mounting means, and affords variation of contour of cutting or scoring or both as may be desired.
Pursuant to my preferred procedure or forming the cutting and scoring unit, the body portions of the cutting and scoring knives are rules of flat stock of uniform thicknesses and the cutting and scoring edges of simple tapered formation, affording ready making up of the knives for all variations of outline of the desired cutting and scoring.
By the use of my invention, the output per unit of time is materially increased. My invention is wholly adapted to be directly attached to rotary and similar presses, and
thereby attaining the desired cutting and scoring of the web as well as the printing or coloring or both by substantially a single operation.
By reason of the composite or made-up character of my cutting and scoring shell, the component strips are of relatively short arcial lengths, thereby enabling in practice the use of strips of substantially uniform inner and outer radii of curvature respectively as well as of uniform thickness, not withstanding that the resulting shells are of different inner and outer radii of curvature.
The particular cut and scored outline of the blank illustrated in the drawings is that of a carton for a bar of soap, and it will be understood that the invention is also adapted for forming other out and scored products such as egg boxes and the like, hearing such printed or colored impressions as may be desired.
lVhereas, I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may he made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The combination with a cylinder roll and its coupled impression roll, of adjustable means for rotatably mounting said cylinder roll and said impression roll, a set of cutting and scoring shells respectively having difierent inner and outer diameters and a set of supports respectively for said cutting and scoring shells having substantially the same inner diameter and of different outer diameters, each of said supports being integral and of a complete circumference.
3. The combination with a cylinder roll and its coupled impression roll, a set of cutting and scoring shells respectively having different inner and outer diameters, a set of supports respectively for said cutting and scoring shells having substantially the same inner diameter and of different outer diameters, and means for removably locking any support to the cylinder roll, each of said supports being integral and of a complete circumference.
