J. WENTZ DETACHABLE RIM AND WHEEL Filed Sept. 22. 1925 INYENTOR Patented daily Q, i gid.
JERE L. WENTZ, or rassarc, NEW JERSEY.
PATENT DETACHABLE RIM AND VTHEEL.
Application filed. September My invention relates to an improvement in detachable rims and more particularly to such rims for tractor wheels.
An object of my invention is to provide a rim of simple construction. Another ohject is to avoid the necessity of piercing the wheel body in order to fasten the rim on the body. A still further object is to provide a positive, non-slippable and easily removable locking means.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side view of the wheel;
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the felloe, rim and lugs;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lug; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification of the lug.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts thruout the several views.
The type of wheel with which my detachable rim is to be used is shown at 1, having the rim attached thereto. The fixed rim of the wheel 1 having the hub 2 is composed of two annular angle irons 1 riveted together flange to flange by the rivets 4. These rivets also serve to fasten the spokes 3 to the angle irons between the flanges of the same as shown in Fig. 2.
My invention is applied to a wheel such as is above described, and includes a circular metal band or annulus 6 having holes drilled therethru near the outer edge along the periphery on either side. The circular band may be formed from a flat sheet of malleable metal or may be cast or made in any other well known and desired manner. The holes drilled in said band are at points corresponding to the interval between respective spokes or between every other spoke or as desired. in'the wheel 1. The holes are preferably countersunk to receive screw heads.
My invention is assembled and attached Serial No. 57,826.
the rivet heads and the hole 8 in line with the hole in the band or with the rib 11 of the lug between the rivets of each pair.
This is done on either side of the flange at a snoke and preferabl at ever 1 other s Joke as shown in Fig. 2.
As each lug has the hole 8 aligned with the hole in the band a fiat headed screw 9 18 inserted and driven flush with the outside surface of theband. Then these lugs have been so fastened to the band r detachable rim by the screw 9 it will be evident that the rim is looked against peripheral slip due to the sockets 11 or ribs 11 and that the lugs on either side also prevent any lateral displacement.
Therefore the rim is securely but detachably held in fixed position.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. In a device of the character described the combination of a wheel having a felloe including two annular angle irons flange to flange, rivets fastening said angle irons together, heads on said rivets projecting from said flanges, an annular band on the felloe, a plurality of lugs on either side of said flanges, said lugs abutting said flanges and said band, means on said lugs to engage the projecting heads of the rivets and screws binding the lugs to the band.
2. In a tractor wheel the combination of two annular angle irons, rivets fastening said angle irons flange to flange to form a tread of inverted T-shaped cross section, the heads of said rivets projecting from said flanges, 21 one piece circular band surround ing said tread, lugs on either side of said tread, means on said lugs to engage said rivet heads and means to lock said lugs to said band whereby the band is locked to said tread.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my Sept, 1925.
JERE L. WENTZ.
