Description

July 6 1926.
5. J. EDWARDSON TOOL Filed May 12. 1923 Patented July 6, 1926.
SAM J. EDWARDSON, F ANACONDA, MONTANA.
TOOL.
Application filed May 12, 1923. Serial No. 638,525.
The object of the invention is to provide an impact tool particularly adapted to the use of a carpenter or cabinet maker so that the wooden handled implements which he is required to use may be driven without marring or breaking-the handles. The tool. has further utility as a means by which the Wood parts used in cabinet and carpenter work may be driven into place without damage to the same.
With these general purposes in view the invention consists in a construction and com bination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a tool embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the mallet head.
Figure 3 is a face View of the mallet head.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a modified view of the invention showing the same equipped with two mallet heads. v
The invention comprises a tool having the body portion 1 formed with an eye for the reception of a handle 2 and also formed at one extremity with the hammer poll 3 de pending from which, in a plane parallel with the handle, there is a claw 3 for the purpose of Withdrawing nails when such is necessary or removing loose screws when the heads project suificiently from the work. At the extremity opposite the poll 3 there is formed the mallet head 4 of conical shape with a large base constituting the impact face. The mallet head comprises a plurality of leather disks 5 arranged one on the other, a metal stud 6 extending from the body portion through the majority of the disks and receiving on its extremity the nut 7 abutting the washer 8 and forcing that down against the other of the disks carried by the stud and holding the several in attached position on the body portion of the head. The next succeeding disk is secured to the outermost of the disks by fastening means such as pegs 9, the disk intervening between the outermost and the disk next to the washer 8 being recessed or formed with an eye to provide a clearance space or pocket for the nut 7. By means of such construction as this, an impact element is provided in connection with the tool which will not scar or damage the work on which the device is used and while the head is preferably held to the body portion by a metallic attaching medium in the form of a stud, the outermost disks are secured by means which will not mar or .scar the work. Obviously, as the outermost disks are rendered unserviceable as a result of continued use of the tool, they may be replaced by new disks attached by means of pegs such as those indicated at 9.
In the modification shown in Figure 5, the hammer poll is replaced with a mallet head 4 of identical construction as the mallet head 4 at the opposite end of the body portion 1 of the tool.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is An impact tool having a mallet head con sisting of a plurality of laminae of yieldable material and means for securing the laminae 7 to the tool and comprising a stud extending through a specified number of laminae adj acent the tool, and pegs securing the outer most laminae to those secured by the stud and covering the upper end of the latter.
In testimony whereof he afiixes his signature.
SAM J. EDWARDSON.
