3 Claims. (Cl. 145-46) This invention relates to tools for setting nails, and more particularly to a nail set having a laterally disposed handle.

One object of this invention is to provide a device of the above nature which includes improved means for holding the tool in alignment with a nail being set, whereby the setting operation will be facilitated.

A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eflicient and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view, there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawing two forms in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.

In the drawings,

Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved nail set as it would appear during use.

Fig. 2 is an end view of an adaptation of the tool, wherein the bit portion is modified to serve as a center punch.

Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral ID indicates the nail set generally, which comprises a tapered bit portion H, and an integral laterallyextending'shank H! which is inclined downwardly from the upper part of the bit portion I I.

In order to provide a surface suitable to receive the impact of a hammer H, the upper surface of the shank I2 is formed with an integral beveled anvil boss 13 in alignment with the bit portion I I.

The outer end of the shank I2 is enlarged upwardly to form a handle [4 which is preferably knurled and recessed upon its side surfaces so that the tool may be firmly gripped by the carpenter, or other person using said tool.

The outer end of the shank I2 is also provided with a fiat base surface [5 which is disposed in substantially the same plane as the end of the bit portion II, in order that the nail set It) may be firmly supported upon a board B in proper position to set a nail N in said board.

Operation Inasmuch as the flat base surface l5 of the shank I2 is disposed in approximately the same plane as the end of the bit portion II, the nail set will have a stable support upon the board B.

Further, the nail set 10 will not be likely to overturn when receiving an oblique blow from the hammer H, and even if it does overturn, no injury can be inflicted upon the user's hand by the hammer H. The offset relation of the handle 14 will also permit the nail set It] to be held without obscuring the work.

One advantage of the improved nail set is that it will enable the carpenter to set nails at a very rapid rate without fatigue.

The tool described above may be modified to provide a center punch I 6, as shown in Fig. 2, which is similar to the nail set 10 except that the tapered bit portion I! has a point 18 at its lower end.

Thus, the center punch IE will have all the advantages of the nail set ID in that it may be easily and firmly held by the user without likelihood of injury to his hands.

While there have been disclosed in this specification two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

1. In a tool, an elongated shank having an integral vertical bit portion, said shank being inclined at an acute angle away from said bit, an elongated, relatively wide, heavy, flat-surfaced bottom base on said shank at the other end thereof, said bit portion having a lower extremity disposed in the plane of said base surface, whereby said tool will be stable upon a, flat supporting surface and said shank will be raised from said base bottom to said bit portion.

2. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which said shank is provided with an elongated handle disposed adjacent said base surface.

3. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which the extremity of said bit portion is circular, whereby said tool is adapted for setting nails.
