It is to be noted that the spring 17 accommodates slight variations due to wear and other variations, which alterthe length of the rod and thus insures a very quiet operation oi the tapp' t rod at all times.

Although the invention has been described in considcrabha detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied anl is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. A tappet rod head-comprising a cylindrical member lniving a closed end and an open end, a plug screwed into the open end, a plunger slidable through said plug, a helical. spring surrounding said plunger and urging it outwardly, and means for adjusting the pressure of: said spring.
2. A tappet rod head comprising a cylindri :al member having a closed end and an open end, a plug screwed into the open end, a plunger slidable through said plug, a helical spring surroi-lnding said plunger and urging it outwardly, means for adjust-- ing the pressure of said spring, and a locking member for holding said adjusting means against motion.
3. A'device adapted for use with tappet rods comprising an elongated cylindrical member having an open end, a plug screwed into said open end and having an enlarged aperture through its inner end, and a smaller aperture through its outer end, a plunger titted within said plug and projecting through the smaller aperture and having a collar formed thereon, a spring positioned within the lar 'er aperture of said plug and bearing against said collar, and a cap screwed'into said plug and adjustably compre sing said spring.
4-. A device adapted for use with tappet rods comprising an elongated cylindrical memberhaving an open end, a plug screwed into said open end and having an enlarged aperture through its inner end, and a smaller aperture through its outer end, a
plunger titted within said plug and projecting through the smaller aperture and having a collar formed thereon, a spring positioned within the large aperture of said plug and bearing against said collar, a cap screwed into saidplug and adjustably compressing said spring, said )lug and said cap having right angle slot-s "oi-med therein, and a right angle member having its arms removably .Feated in said slots to hold said cap and plug against relative motion.
