Be it lrnown that l, CHARLES A. MILLE-R, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and `State of New York, iave invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Valve-ROCLAdjuSting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has to do with a valve rod adjustingl device, Aand the principal obj ect is to provided for readily changing the length of an individual valve rod, with reference to the valve rod tappet or other operating device of an internal combustion engine.
Afurther purpose of the improvement is to afford a simple structure that can be produced at a low cost, and permits of making the desired adjustment without removing the valve or any of the engine parts, the simplicity of the device being such that the adjusting operation can be e'ected in a few moments and without requiring the knowledge or skill of an expert repair man.
Other objects and advantages will be made clear in the following description, and the novel features of the invention will be fully pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the mechanism here illustrated, which will be understood as showing merely an exemplary embodiment for carrying out the invention, A designates a cylinder-head having a cylinder port controlled by a valve B, which is mounted upon a valve stem C. The valve B is held closed by a spring, in the usual manner, being intermittently opened by an operating device which engages the outer end of the valve stem at regular in tervals. @wing to the constant engagement of the operating device and valve stem, the
parts become worn and it is necessary to bring about a relative adjustment in ordery formed of hard steel or other metal or matev rial, its closed outer end having a flat surface o, with which the tappet or operating device E engages to open the valve B. To
adjust the length of the valve stem and consequently vary the throw of the valve B, it is only necessary to turn the contact member D upon the valve stem in one direction or the other.
lt is extremely important that the contact member be held fiXedly in its adjusted position, and I accomplish this by providing an elongated opening or slot c in the Contact member, and a small opening Z in the valve stem. A locking member is provided, preferably in the form of a pin c. rEhe contact member D is turned until the opening o is in alignment with the opening 2, and the locking pin e is then inserted through the openings referred to, fitting closely within the small opening d, and preventing any turning of the contact member D. The pin e also serves to hold the retaining plate f in place, the latter engaging the outer end of the controlling spring g, which actuates the valve to its closed position.
wWhen an adjustment is desired, the spring g is pressed sufficiently to release the pin e, which is withdrawn, and the contact member D can then be rotated upon the valve stem to lengthen or shorten the valve stem with reference to the operating device E. rlhis adjusting operation is rendered much more easy by providing for retaining the spring g and plate 7" in retracted position, and to accomplish this a supplemental small opening 72, is provided in the valve stem and located inwardly beyond the normal position of the contact member. The opening L is of the same size as the before-described opening d, and its purpose is to receive the pin e after the spring and plate f are forced inwardly to the position of Fig. 4. and retaining plate are held retracted, as in F ig. 4, and the contact member can then be readily adjusted until the proper relation with the contact member is obtained. Following this, the pin e is Withdrawn from the opening' z, and again inserted into the opening Z for holding the parts in normal adjusted position.
1While I have described the invention with reference to a` more or less specific construction, it is to `be understood that l do not limit it to the disclosure ot this application, as it susceptible of modifications Without departing from the spirit or essential purposes of the improvement, as set torth in the following claims.
That I claim is:
l. The combination with an internal combustion engine,'oi" a valve and valve ste-m, an operating device for the valve, a Contact member having an interiorly threaded portion and an elongated transverse opening, the valve stem also having a transverse opening, a locking pin which passes through the opening in the contact member and lits closely in the opening in the valve stem, thereby preventing the contact member l'rom turning after it is adjusted, a spring governing the valve, and means adapted to holdl the spring out of normal position during adjustment of the Contact member.
2. T he combination With an internal combustion engine, ot a valve and valve stem, an operating device for the valve, a contact member having an interiorly threaded p0rtion and an elongated transverse opening, the valve stem also having a transverse opening, a locking pin which passes through the opening in the Contact member and fits closely7 in the opening in the valve stem, thereby preventing the Contact member from turning after it is adjusted, and a spring governing the valve, the stem having a second opening to receive said pin and hold the spring out of normal position during adjustment oi the contact member.
