ELECTRIC CONDENSER.
Application led July 23, 1924. Serial No. 727,633.
My invention relates to electric condensers whose sides are formed of metal leaves or plates, the invention having for its object an improved assembly of such leaves with the supports that carry them.
ln carrying out my invention the condenser leaves are received within slots or recesses which are formed in the supports for the leaves and the metal between the slots is outwardly flared or spread to press tightly upon the leaves to hold them firmly in assembly with their supports, and to evenly space the median planes of the leaves irrespective of 'the variations in the thickness of the leaves that usually occurs in practice.
The invention will be more fully explained in connection with the accompanying' drawing in which Fig. 1 is a view of the preterred embodiment of the invention on line 1-,1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan view, with a mounting board or panel shown in section; F 3 is a sectional detail on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4- is a view, on a larger scale, on line fl-fl of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a View on line of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 -is a perspective view illustrating a step in the process of assembly; Fig. 7 is a perspective view illustrating the completion of the step illustrated in Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a view, on a larger scale, on line 8 8 of Fig. 3.
The condenser illustrated includes two mounting plates 1 and 2 of insulating material which are assembled upon threaded metallic rods 3` by means of nuts fl. The plate 2 is screwed upon the mounting board 5. One of the condenser sides is composed of a group of metallic leaves or'plates 6, preferably three or more, formed with aligned U- shaped recesses 7 through which the mounting rods 3 pass, there being preferably three such mounting rods. A longitudinally split metallic sleeve or tube 8 embraces each rod 8 and is formed with transverse lingers 9 upon opposite sides of the split in the sleeve, these fingers entering the spaces between the leaves. These fingers are preferably initially straight, as illustrated in Fig. 6. The
slits or slots 10 between the fingers are eX- tended into the bores of the sleeve 8 and initially somewhat loosely receive the portions of the leaves which margin the sides of the recesses 7 therein, the spaces 10 being intially wider throughout than the thickness of the thickest leaves that are apt to be employed in the construction of the condenser. if'

The other condenser side illustrated includes leaves 11 interleaved with the leaves 6 and mounted upon a rotatable shaft 12 in order that the capacity of the condenser may be adjusted, although the invention is not to be limited to such adjustability. The shaft 12, if rotatable, may beprovided with a knob 13, in front of the panel or rmounting board 5.
Changes may be made without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
A spacing member for condenser plates comprising a split tube having a plurality of cross slits extending at right anglesr to its axis, in combination with a plurality of condenser plates received in said slits, the material between the slits being spread into tight engagement with said plates and relatively disposed to maintain the median planes oil said plates substantially equidistant.
