UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM H. KING, OF PETERSBURG, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JEROME BORER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUSlC-LEAF TURNERS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,101 dated January 26, 1875; application filed April 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KING, of Petersburg, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Attachment to Music-Leaf Turners, of
which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing,.l igure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved attachment to music-leaf turner as applied to the piano or other instrument in connec tion with my music-leaf turner; and Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, are a detail bottom view and vertical transverse section of the lever and ratchet'plate for opera-tin g theleaf-turner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for use in connection with my musicleat turner, patented to me under date of January 6, 187 3, and numbered 146,188, an attachment for turning the same by means of the leg or'foot, so that the time-consuming use of the hands is entirely dispensed with, and the arms quickly and neatly turned at the required moment.
My invention consists of anattachment consisting of a cord fastened by a hook and elastic strap to the left side of the 1nusi0- rack, to be then wound around the knob of my musicleaf turner, passing then over suit able pulleys to a lever pivoted to the under side of the piano, musicstand, or other article, the front part of which is acted upon by ahing'ed' plate with segmental ratchet, and operated by the leg or foot, turning the leaves,on raising the ratchet-plate, by means of the elastic strap in one direction, and by means of the lever in opposite direction.
In the drawing, A represents the cord, and B the lever-and-ratchet mechanism, of my attachment to music-leaf turner. Cord A is applied at the left-hand side of the music rack of piano or other musical instrument or music-stand, after the leat turner has been attached to-the main part thereof, in the position required.
A hook or any other fastening device, a,
- may be used for attaching cord A to the rack,
an elastic strap or spring, I), of rubber or other material, forming the connection of fastening a, and the end of cord A. Cord A is then Wound around the knob of my leafturner, and passed over suitable pulleys, 01, applied at the side of the piano or similar inbase-plate, as desired. It consists of lever U,
which is pivoted centrally to the instrument, with cord A attached to its rear end by means of a slit and set-screw, f. The recessed front of lever O has a metallic catch, 9, for looking into the teeth of a segmental ratchet, D, of a plate, E, which is hinged to the instrument under right angles to lever O.
The ratchet-plate D E acts on the lever C, until raised by means of the leg or foot, dropping instantly back on the lever as soon as released.
the leaves attached to the arms of the turner to the right. The elastic strap is thereby stretched, and turner and attachment ready for the player.
A simple touch of the ratchet-plate by the leg or foot ofthe player releases the lever, and producestheinstant turning of the leat by the action of the elastic strap and cord, which is repeated as required, forming therebya very convenient and simple device for operating the music-leaf turner and the leaves without the use of the hands.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pivoted lever 0, having cord A attached to its rear end, and catch 9 at its recessed front end, in combination with segmental ratchet-plate D E, hinged sidewise and laterally to lever O, to operate as described.
WILLIAM H. KING.
