UNITED f STATES PATENT oFFlc.
ROMAN F. IPOLSKI, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
IPADDED COVER FOR IRONING BOARDS.
applicati@ 1aed :une 24, 1925. serial No. 39,244.
It is my object to provide an improved cover and pad therefor, adapted to be quicklyand easily attached to and detached from the top of an ironing board of common type.
5 I-Ieretofore, it has been common practice to secure the covers and pads to ironing -boards by the use of nails, tacksor similar i fastening means, and much time and laborhas been expended in so attaching the covers,
l either after removal for washing or to re-A place a worn cover by a new one. In my 1mproved cover, all suchfasteningmeans are done away' with, and it is only necessary to extend the cover by stretching to va limited l extent, and then to draw the margins thereof downward4 over the edges of the ironing board top.
In the accompanying drawings, -forming part of this specification, Figurel'is a perl spective view-of the cover showing the bot-l tom thereof, detached vfrom the board top;v
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the board top with the cover and pa-din place thereon; Fig. 3 is a' fragmentary, perspective view of the margin .of the cover and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the board assembled and with one corner of the cover raised in position for nal stretching into place on the top. l r ,Y i f As illustrated, I provide an ironing board top 5 having tl1e usual tapered or converging end 6, a squared end 7 extending at right angles to the longitudinal side edges and rounded corners-at the junctions of the ends and sides of the board. My improved cover 8 is formed with an end 9 adapted to conform to the end '6 of the board, the opposite extremity of the cover being formed to t the end 7 of the board. To form flanges 10 around the margin of the cover 7, said margin is gathered where it is to fit the cornersV or convex portions of the top at 11 in the drawings.
An endless tape 12 is sewed to the normally lowerv edgeof the flange 10. This tape is made of a material having less elas- 5, as indicated ticity than the fabric of the cover 8, and is of smaller perimeter than the board 5, so thatvsaid tape normally lies within the outer margin of said board when the cover is in position thereon. The pad 13, which is adapted to be placed beneath-the cover 8, is constructed of suitable thick fabric, or may be made of a number of thicknesses of cloth bound at their edges one to the other, but is 55 otherwise formed like the cover 8 with marginal tape and gathered portions.
To mount the cover and pad on the top 5, the end 6 of said top is inserted in the taperedend 9. of the cover and corresponding end of thepad, so that said cover and pad cap the end of the board. n Now theopposite end of the cover and pad may be forcibly stretched over the squaredl end 7 of the top 5, so that the tape 12 is carried downward beneath the board. Now, when re-` leased, the tape maintains the fabricof the e'over and pad tightlyIupon the top 5. .-To
'remove 'the cover or pad, it 1s only necessary to grasp the tape 12 near one of the gathered portions 11 and to stretch the fabric sufficiently to permit the tape to be carried upward past the edge ofthe top 5.
Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is The combination with an ironing board top, of a cover constructed of a somewhat elastic fabric and 4formed with a margin constituting flanges adapted to extend downward about the edges of said top, and a looped tape, of material having less elasticity than said cover, secured to said margin and arranged to be drawn over said top while stretching the lfabric ofsaid cover, said tape being shorter than the Aperimeter of said top and constituting a permanently attached binding strip extending entirely around the margin of the cover. l y
In testimony whereof, I have `hereunto 00 signed my name to this specification.
ROMAN F. POLSKI.
