Description

June 29 1926.
W. FALKENBERG RADIATOR SUN Filed June 6, 1923 Patented June 29, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEW YORK, N. Y.
RADIATOR SUN.
Application filed June 6, 1923. Serial No. 843,758.
clamp an exchangeable glass plate 18 against the open front part of the reflector.
The glass plates 18-are varicol'ored so that The present invention relates to improvements in electric heaters, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a heater with a means for making it useful for medical purposes as a so-called radiator sun.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an electric heater which may readily be changed into a radiator for varicolored light rays for medical purposes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an electric heater combined with means for generating ultraviolet rays for local treatment of atients.
A stillfurther 0 ject of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of this kind which may just as well be used with direct as with alternating currents of high frequency.
These and other objects of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure.
Figure 1 is a side view of my novel ap-' paratus, partly? in section, illustrating its use as a heater.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 1 illustratin the use of the apparatus as radiator sun or medical purposes.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of my novel sun, partly in section and illustrating its use as a generator for ultraviolet rays for medical purposes.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the apparatus comprises a foot 10 which supports a standard or post 11 to the up r end of which is pivotally secured, a brac et 12 which carries a socket 13 for the reception of the customary heat resistance 14. y
A concave mirror or reflector 15 is secured in the usual manner to socket 13 and surrounds the resistance 14.
If the apparatus is to be used for medical purposes as radiator sun, as for instance illustrated in Figure 2, the resistance 14 is replaced by a lamp 16, and the peripheral outer margin of the reflector 15 is provided with four clamps 17 which are adapted to rays of various colors are produced by the lamp behind the colored plates.
In case it is desired' to generate ultraviolet rays, the apparatus illustrated in Fig-' ure 3 is used, in which a holder 19 for the carbons 20 and 21 of an arc li ht is attached to the socket 13, and lateral s ields or baflie plates 22 are provided to avoid a dispersion of the light rays.
A funnel 23 is provided which is attached at one end by means of a bayonet coupling to the front of the reflector. This funnel may be made to receive telescopically in its narrow front part 24, a neck part or tube 25 the outer end of which is closed by a collector lens 26 for the purpose of permitting the use of the apparatus for local radiation of a patients body. Plug contacts 27 are provided for connecting the apparatus with a source of electricity in the usual manner.
The apparatus can be constructed for use with direct as well as alternating current, in the latter case by simply installing in the foot 10 a high frequency apparatus. I
The operation of the device will be perfectly clear fror. the above description.
The ap aratus illustrated in Figure 1 is used as a eater in the ordinary well known manner. If it is desired to use the apparatus for medical purposes, the resistance 14 is replaced by a lamp 16 or by an arc light 19 and glass'plates of various colors are conveniently attached to the front part of the reflector, and the funnel 23 is attached to the reflector, and the tube 25 with the collector lens 26 is inserted into the restricted outer end of the funnel.
The apparatus may evidently either be used with any lamp socket and in this case the reflector will be held by the lamp or are light against the socket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A radiator sun for medical purposes, comprising a stand, a bracket pivotally secured ried by the bracket, a semi-spherical refiector secured to the socket, clamps removably secured to the marginal edges of the reflector, an approximately semi-spherical member carried by the clamps and closing the open edge of the reflector, the outer sur- "face of said member gradually merging into an elongated neck disposed in line With the bracket, a tube telescopically arranged in the neck and carrying a collector lens, and 10 a glass plate disposed intermediate the re flector and member.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
'WILHELM FALKENBERG.
