INVENTOR MMM'fra/wka,
WITN ESSES ATTORN EYS UNITED STATES ALEXANDER FRANKEL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO JACOB LAGOWITZ, OF SAME PLACE.
PATENT OFFICE,
IMPROVEMENT IN lTRUNK-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,085, dated January 26, 1875; application tiled December 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALEXANDER FRANKEL, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Trunk-Lid Catches and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ot' the drawing is a representation of an outside view of my trunk-lid catch, and Fig. 2 is an inside view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional View.
This invention has relation to catches which are especially designed for trunks, but which may be used for other purposes.
The nature of my invention consists in a 'hooking-catch which is inclosed inside of a case and formed on a stem which is allowed to oscillate, and also to receive endWise movement, and which is acted on by a single coiled vspring, that keeps the catch in locking position, in combination with a hooking-catch, Which is formed on a plate which is adapted to be applied to the trunk-lid, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a latch-case, which has a perforated flange, through which screws can be applied for securing the case to the body of a trunk. This case A has a hollow stud cast in it to receive a screw which secures the back plate, a, in place. B designates a catch, which has a beveled hooking-nose. This catch is formed on a cylindrical stern, b, the ends of which are received into and through holes made through the sides of the case A, which allow the stem to oscillate freely. On one end of this stem a finger-piece, c, is formed, and just below the hooked catch B a tongue, c, with a notch in it, is formed on the stem b. O designates a helical spring, which is coiled around the stein b, one end of which spring bears on the tongue c, and the other end bears against the back plate, c. The spring O holds the catch inapposition for engaging with a catch, E, which is formed on a plate, F, Which plate is adapted for being secured to the lid of a trunk.
When the catch E is thrust into the caseA by closing the trunk-lid, the beveled nose of this catch will force back the catch B and become engaged with it. To release the trunklid, the catch B is pressed forward by applying the linger to the projection c, which throwsV hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEX.. FRANKEL.
