My invention relates to side frames for car trucks and has been primarily designed to provide a simple wrought metal construe-- tion which is both strong and stiff but comparatively light in Weight.
The invention, generally stated, consists in forming a car truck side frame from a relatively thin sheet or blank of metal shaped with a plurality of symmetrically formed side frame portions and folded so as to provide the compression member, tension member and truck columns. I
C ne of the principal features of the invention, particularly stated, is to provide a car truck side frame from a substantially square sheet-metal blank shaped to provide an inner Wall and an outer Wall disposed in spaced relation to each other, each of said Walls having a bolster opening, a plurality of truck column portions, a plurality of top arch bar portions, and aplurality of bottom arch bar portions, the angular disposition of said bottom arch bar portions permitting of the formation of the side frame from a relatively small blank in Which there is a minimum Waste.
Another object is to provide a car truck side frame formed from a relatively small sheet-metal blank having a plurality of top arch bar. portions, truck column portions, and bottom arch bar portions, said blank being folded along an axis of symmetry extending diagonally of the blank'whereby the opposite edge portions thereof form thetension member with its bottom arch bar por' tions disposed at an angle to the top arch bar portions of the side frame, Which angle corresponds to the angular relation of said opposite edge portions to the axis of symmetry of the blank.
A further object of the invention resides in the production of a Wrought metal side frame having symmetrically formed side frame portions, the arrangement of said portions in the blank from which the side frame is formed being such that part of the metal forming the symmetrical side frame portions extends in the direction of its rolling While other portions of the metal forming the oppositely disposed symmetrical side frame portions'is disposed in a transverse direction to its rolling as the result of folding the blank along an axis obliquely disposed with relation to the direction of rolling, said arrangement of the metal serving to greatly increase the strength value of the side frame and permit of itsformation from relatively thin sheetanetal blanks.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a Wrought metal side frame formed from a sheet-metal blank shaped and cut to provide corresponding side frame-portions, the opposite corners of the blank being cut away, and the corner portions adjacent the diagonally disposed axis of symmetry of the blank permitting of the upper ends of the bottom arch bar portions receiving the journal boxes at the ends'of the side frame in a comparatively simple and reliable manner. v
A still further feature of the invention consists in the method of manufacturing a car truck side frame by forming from a sheet of metal a substantially square blank and providing in said' blank upon opposite sides of a diagonally disposed axis of symmetry corresponding side frame portions, s'omeof said side frame portions being arranged adjacent opposite edges of the blank andat an angle to its axis of symmetry, folding the blank along a line Which, throughout its length, is parallel to said diagonally disposed axis of symmetry, and uniting said side frame portions. r e

The bot-tom arch bar portions of the side frame are formed along the opposite edge portions of the square blank, the angular disposition of said bottom arch bar portions w.ith respect to each other being that of a right angle and their angular relation to the diagonally extending axis of symmetry being that of forty-five degrees. These same relative angular arrangen'ients of the bottom arch bar portions are maintained in the completed side frame. 7
The blank is folded along a line parallel to the diagonally extending axis of symmetry, it being observed that in the folding of said blank the direction of the rolling of the metal is disposed differently in adjacent arch bar portions, that is to say, the direction of rolling of the metal is disposed longitudinally of one side frame portion and transversely of the other side frame portion in each side wall of the side frame. The relative strength of the bottom arch bar portions is increased as the result of this construction in that some of the bottom arch bar portions take the stresses in the direction of rolling of the plate.
It will be observed from the foregoing method of blanking a sheet-metal plate with corresponding side frame portions upon opposite sides of an axis of symmetry disposed obliquely to the direction of rolling of the plate, that a relatively small and thin metal blank can be utilized and a side frame constructed which not only has the merit of being formed of light and reliable material, but the disposition of the metal in the sev eral parts is such that the points of the side frame subjectedto greatest strains in service, are rendered exceedingly strong.

bending corresponding portions of said blank to form flanges, folding said blank along a line which, throughout its length, 10 is parallel to said axis of symmetry, and uniting said flanges.
