Be it known that l, Bruns W7. KABEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of lvfaryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Frames; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert As to make and use the same.
rlhe invention relates to car truck side frames of wrought metal construction and resides in the production of a very strong and reliable side frame of comparatively light weight which can be economically manufactured from a plurality of metal sheets or blanks.
@ne of the principal 'features of the invention is to construct a car truck side frame from separate metal sheets united by welding and comprising inner and outer walls, each of said walls being formed with corresponding side frame portions, such as l truck column portions, top arch bar portions,
and bottom arch bar portions, said walls being provided with stiffening flanges adapted to be abutted and welded longitudinally of the side frame, portions of said flanges being designed to co-act with the journal boxes `for effecting a very rigid and durable connection thereof to the side frame, said connection acting to resist the rotative strains of the journal box with respect to the side frame and permitting of rapid assembly and detachment of the boites from the frame.
Another object of the invention resides in the Construction of a car truck side frame from sheetmetal blanks suitably flanged and arranged in opposed and spaced relation to 'form the inner and outer walls, portions of the flanges, bordering the lower edges of the side frame, being united at the ends thereof to provide journal box recesses corresponding in shape to the curvature of the ends of the frame, advantageously located welds being utilized to effect the joining of the flanged portions of the blanks at spaced intervals longitudinally of the side fram-e.
Another object of the invention is to construct a car truck side frame of oppositely arranged flanged metal sheets welded longitudinally of the frame, said sheets having Serial No. 681,202.
portions of the flanges united at their ends to form continuous bearing surfaces for contacting the journal boxes, and other portions disposed adjacent said boxes to which they are connected for resisting the relative ro tation of the journal boxes with respect to the s ide frame, said last named portions also serving as an abutment for resisting said rotation in one direction.
Another object of the invention is to eon struct a car truck side frame from complementary metal sheets shapedto provide the inner and outer walls of the frame and having` corresponding side frame portions, said sheets being welded in a plane passing through the center of the frame and having portions at each end thereof adapted to form bearing surfaces for receiving and contacting the journal boxes which are designed to enibrace and be connected to the respective inner and outer Walls. The invention further consists in the coinbination and arrangement of the several parts as well as the method of constructing` the side frame from flanged complementary metal sheets or blanks united by welding so as to permit portions of the flanges of the blanks to form journal box recesses and attaching portions for the journal boxes.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate correspending parts in the several views, the side frame involves an outer sheet-metal wall l and an inner sheet-metal wall 2, said walls being formed from separate sheet-metal blanks preferably of symmetrical contour and each having a bolster opening and corresponding side frame portions such as truck column portions, top arch bar portions and bottom arch bar portions. Each of the metal sheets or blanks is provided with stiffening flanges, said flanges extending inwardly of the frame and being united in a plane passing through the center of the side frame longitudinallythereof. The top arch bar portions 3 and bottom arch bar portions t of the sheet-metal walls are formed integral at their points of junction over the journal boxes, the stiftening flange of the top arch bar portions being indicated by the numeral 5 and the stili'ening flange of the bottom arch bars being designated by the numeral 6. VThe flanges bordering the top arch bar portions Vare arranged along the top of the side frame, 'said flanges being preferably united :by welding in a plane extending parallelt'o the axes of symmetry of the united'metal blanks. The flanges bordering the bottom arch bar portions are arranged along the lower edge of the side frame and are also united by welding preferably located at spaced intervals for Veffectively uniting the blanks, said welding being preferably disposed in the same vertical plane as the weld connection joining the blanks at the top of the frame.
Each stiffening flange G of the bottom arch bar portions is provided with an inturned portion 7 arranged above the journal box and disposed to .coact with an adjacent inturned portion for forming a bearing surface adapted to contact the top of the journal box carried by the side frame. The pori tions 7 of the flanges are preferably curved to conform to the contour 'of the bottom arch bar portions of the side walls at the ends of the frame, said curving producing very effective journal box recesses in which the journal boxescan be easily seated and from which they can be readily removed.

Each journal box is provided with an lextension 13 preferably arranged between the depending portions 12 of the flanges 6, saidv portions being firmly connected to said extension by sheets to form flanges disposed inwardly of f the side frame, shaping portions of said flanges to provide journal box recesses, uniting adjacent edge portions of theflanges forming said recesses to produce continuous bearing areas contacting the tops of the journal boxes, and uniting other portions of said flangesin a plane passing through the center of the side frame. v
lt will be perceived that my improved method consists in welding, at a plurality of points, the complementary flanged metal sheets in opposed spaced relation with the flanges extending toward each other, each of said sheets, in addition to providing journal box bearing arcas from flanged portions thereof, also being formed with a projecting portion forming an attaching portion for the journal box, which projecting portion also acts as an abutment member for resisting relative rotative strains in one direction.
.A car truck side frame constructed in accordance with my present invention can b'e economically produced with comparatively little handling, the bending of the flanges and the uniting thereof beingrapidly accomplished, the most advantageous welding apparatus being utilized to assure an exceedingly strong and reliable 'side frame.
I claim:

A car truck side frame involving a plurality of lianged metal sheets oppositely disposed and ar 'anged in spaced relation to form inner and outer walls, and weld means uniting adjacent flanged portions of said sheets at the ends of the side frame to provide curved bearing surfaces adapted to contact the ournal boxes. i

A car truck side frame involving opposite-ly `arranged flanged metal sheets arranged in spaced relation to form inner and outer walls, and weld means uniting adjacent flanged portions of said sheets in a plane passing through the center of the side frame, the united flanges at each end of the side frame forming discontinuous bearing surfaces adapted to Contact the journal boxes. j n

A car truck side frame involving oppositely arranged flanged metal sheets united longitudinally of the side frame and arranged in spaced relation to forni inner and outer Walls, portions of the flanges of the sheets providing bearing surfaces adapted to contact the journal boxes and other portions of the flanges being arranged for connection with said journal box to prevent the relative rotation thereof with respect to said bearing surfaces.

A car truck side fra-me involving a plurality of metal sheets united to form an inner Wall, an outer Wall arranged in spaced relation thereto, each of said Walls being forn'ied with corresponding side frame portions including bottom arch bars having their end portions curved to overlie the journal boxes, and stitiening flanges bordering said bottom arch bars, said flanges having their respective end portions shaped to conform to the curved end portions of said arch bars and arranged to form bearing surfaces for contacting the journal boxes.
8. A car truck side frame involving oppositely arranged metal sheets united in a plane passing through the center of the side frame and arranged to forni inner and outer Walls. each of said Walls being provided With a bolster opening and corresponding side frame portions including bottom arch bars, stilitening flanges bordering said bottom arch bars and arranged to form journal box recesses at the ends of the side frame, said flanges each being provided with a portion arranged adjacent the journal box recess and adapted to be connected to the journal box.
9. A car truck side frame composed of separate sheet-metal blanks, each of said blanks forming one side Wall of the frame and having corresponding side frame portions, stittening flanges for each side Wall, portions of said flanges being shaped to provide journal box recesses, means uniting the stili'ening flanges longitudinally of the truck, and ineans uniting adjacent portions of said flanges forming the journal box recesses.

A car truck side frame involving oppositely arranged metal sheets Welded in a plane passing through the center of the side frame and disposed to forni spaced outerV and inner Walls, each of said walls having aplurality of truck column portions, top arch bar portions and bottom arch bar portions, and stiffening flanges for said bottom arch bar portions, the outer ends of the bottom arch bar portions and said fianges being shaped to provide bearing surfaces adapted to receive and contact the journal boxes.

A car trucl: side frame composed of separate complementary7 sheet-metal blanks, each of said blanks forming one wall of the frame and having side frame portions corresponding to the side frame portions of the complementary blank, inturned stiffening flanges provided on the blanks and bordering said side frame portions, and means uniting said fianges at intervals in a plane passing through the center of the side frame, portions of said united flanges being arranged to overlie the journal boxes and form bearing surfaces for contacting the saine.

A Wrought metal car truck side frame composed of flanged complemenntary metal sheets arranged in spaced relation to form the inner and outer Walls of the side frame, and means uniting the flanged portions of said metal sheets so as to provide continuous bearing surfaces for contacting the top of the journal boxes, portions of the flanged sheets being arranged adjacent the journal boxes to provide abutment means for resisting the relative rotative strains oecurring between the side frame and journal boxes incident to service conditions.
13. A Wrought metal car truck side frame comprising oppositely disposed metal sheets united longitudinally of the frame and arranged in spaced relation to form the. inner and outer Walls, inturned stiilening flanges bordering said sheets and having end portions shaped to contact the top of the journal boxes said flanges being provided with depending portions arranged adjacent one side of the journal box and to which said boxes are connected for resisting in one direction the relative rotative strains of the box With respect to the side frame, said depending portions acting as an abutment member for resisting said rotative strains in the opposite direction.
14. The combination with a car truck side frame composed of oppositely disposed flanged metal sheets Welded in a plane passing through the center of the frame and providing inner and outer Walls, the flanged end portions of which are arranged to form bearing` surfaces, of journal boxes having their top portions contacting said bearing surfaces, means connecting said journal boxes to adjacent flanged portions of said sheets, and means connecting the journal boxes to the respective inner and outer Walls.
15. The method of manufacturing a Wrought metal car truck side frame Which consists in ormii'rg two symmetrical blanks each having corresponding side frame portions, bending portions of said blanks to form flanges projecting toward each other, portions of said flanges being shaped to provide journal box recesses', Welding the fianged portions to provide a continuous bearing area contacting` thev upper portion ot' the journal bok, vand Welding the remainingportions or' the said irianges at a plurality of points.

The method of manufacturing a wrought metal car truck side frame which 'consists in forming two symmetrical blanks each having corresponding` side 'raine portions, blending portions of said blanks to 'form flanges projecting toward each other, sha-j ing said flanges to provide curved journal box recesses, 'and Welding adjacent rportions of the curved lianges and other adjacent portions ot' said flanges in aplane passing through the center of the side frame.

The method of manufacturing a Wrought kmetal car truck side frame which consists in orn'iing two symmetrical blanks each having corresponding side frame por tions, bending portions of said blanks to form lianges projecting toward each other, curving` the end portions ol' some of said flanges to provide bearing areas adapted to contact the journal boxes and bending other portions of said iianges adjacent said curved portions to form an attaching portion, and
uniting said ianges at a plurality oi" points 7' in a plane passing through the center of the frame.
