IBATTERY-POST SEAL.
Application filed August 27,-1924. Serial No. 734,392.
It is Well known thatit'is diflicult to seal the top of a battery over the battery plates and liquid so as to prevent leakage around.
the posts or terminal members. This is due in large measure to the fact that the tops or covers, commonly used been down on the connecting bar or base of the post and to which the plates are attached and these con necting bars or bases are not always straight or so positioned that the top will rest squarely and snugly in place, but are tilted slightly. The object of my invention is to correct this defect and to provide a construction and arrangement which will make it possible to use the well-type of top or cover and to get a perfect seal. I do this by providing the terminal post with an annular collar or flange at a space above the base or connecting bar to which the plates are attached and then in providing a gasket above said flange or collar to receive the top or cover. I also prefer the well-type of cover sothat the lower or inner end of said well rests around the post and upon said gasket and flange, and then provide a taper fit nut for securing the top or cover to the battery post. In order to fully describe my invention, I have illustrated the same on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe. In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the top portion'of a battery em- I I bodying my invention.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown for illustrative and descriptive purposes, 1, designates the jar, 2 the battery plates, attached to the base or connecting bar, 3, of a battery post or terminal, 4. Said gostis provided'with an annular collar or ange, 5, a short distance above the base, or connecting bar 3, which carries the plates. The top or cover is designated 6, and is pro vided with two well openings, as 6 6", of
tapering form, so that when placed over the posts, 4, they rest down upon gaskets 7, 7, on said posts, over said collars, 5, and a short distance above the connectin bars or bases 3, 3, as clearly illustrated. packing, 8, is
placed around each terminal post, 4, Within the well of the cover, 6, and a-taper fit nut, 9, is screwed onto the post, down in the Well with a taperfit, thus perfectly sealing the joint between the c0ver,or top, and the post or terminal which supports the battery plates.
y thus providing an annular shoulder or collar around'the terminal post ofthe battery plates, above the base or supportin bar for the plates, I avoid the necessity o the top or cover 6, resting down on the said base or connecting bars, 3, 3, and make possible a better fit and a better seal.
I do not'limit my invention to the details 'of the application as shown and described for explanatory purposes, exce t as I may be limited by the hereto appen ed claim. I claim:
cover therefor having a well opening therethrough of tapering form, a terminal post having an annular collar formed thereon to engage with theinside of said cover as said post is inserted up through said well openmg, a laterally projectlng base at the lower end'of said post and below said annular collar, a battery plate connected to said base, said post being threaded intermediate its ends, a taper fit nut threaded internally and adapted to screw down on said terminal post, the outer periphery of said nut being in direct taper fit with the well-opening to wedge thereinto, and a packing placed in the bottom of said well opens ing around said terminal post and below said taper nut but not extending above said nut, whereby as saidnut is screwed down into said well opening on said terminal post, the lower end of said nut forces said packing around the opening through which said terminal post is located, substantially in the manner shown and described.
Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, this 20th day of August, 1924.
