cAsnve-nnan ATTACHMENT.
Application filed September 14:, 1916.
To aZZw/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. Human, a cltizen of the United States, and resident of Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casing-Head Attachments, of which the following is-a specification.
p The obect of this invention is to provide improved sealing means for the casing head of an oil well by means of which a string of tubing may be either entered or withdrawn without oil or gas escaping from the casing. The improved device is readily applied to casing heads of usual construction, and is intended for use only when entering or with drawing the tubing, at other times the casing head being closed by the usual casing head cap or closure well known in the art.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in top plan tachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same in position on the casinghead.
Referring to the drawings,2 designates a casing head of usual construction which is formed with a through vertical passage to the lower end 01. which thewell casing 23 connects. The casing head is provided with the usual lateral gas or oil outletst'and,
at its upper end is formed with the dcpressed seat 5. Thisseat is adapted to recelve' a cap or closure (not shown) of ordinary construction, also the attachment comprising the present invention, such closure or attachment, as the case may be, being secured by the set screws 6 entering through the upstanding flange of seat 5.
The im n-oved attachment consists oi? the upper and lower head- like sections 7 and 8, respectively, which are adapted to be secured together by the clamping bolts 9, section 7 formed with base flange 7 which rests on seat 5 on which it is secured by.
screws 6. The under side of section 8 is recessed upwardly at 10 to receive the diaphragm ll of rubber or other flexible material. Projecting from the opposed clamping faces of the heads 7 and 8 are the annular V-shaped flanges or ridges 12, which when the heads are clamped together are impressed in the opposite facesiofthepliaphragm to insure a sealed joint.
The through passageway in heads 7 and 8 for tubing 13 is flared or enlarged posite sides of the diaphragm so that the latter may flex as the tubing is assed through the center opening therein, the do- Specification of Letters Patent.

flection being downward as the tubing is passed into the casing and upward as it is removed therefrom. The opening through the diaphragm is of such size that the latter is caused to closely fit around the tubing, preventing the escape 01 any gas or oil under pressure within the casing. The flexibility or elasticity of the diaphragm is such that the tubing couplings 13 may be passed either upwardly or downwardly therethrough without breaking the seal. After the tubing has been placed in position in the casing or after it has been withdrawn therefrom, the improved attachment is replaced by a casing head cap or closure of usual construction.
The advantage of the invention results from the effectivesealing of the casing duringthe operations of lowering and withdrawing the tubing without in any way interfering with those operations.
claim: 1.-A casing head attachment, comprising two superimposed sections having interiorly enlarged registering vertical openings therethrough, the lower section having a base adapted to engage the usual cap or closure seat of a well casing, a'packing diaphragm seated and clamped between the opposing faces of said sections, one of said sections havin'ga vertical spacing flange surround- .ing the edge of the diaphragm and adapted to contact with the other section to limit the approach of said sections, and clamping means for securing said sections together, substantially as described.
2. A. casing head attachment, comprising two superimposed sections having interibase adapted to engage the usual cap or closure seat of a well casing, a packing diaphragm seated and clamped between the opposing faces of said sections, one of said sections having a vertical spacing flange surrounding the edge of the diaphragm and adapted to contact with the other section, a centering means on the otherof said sections with said spacing flange,
securing said sections together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
