and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be removed from applied position with convenience and facility and whereby the same may be expanded when in applied position to assure a hermetic seal of the container to which it may be applied.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved bottle stopper whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, T will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a stopper constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a coacting container being shown in fragment and in section.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw ings, 1 denotes the body portion of my improved stopper which may be made of cork or other compressible material and disposed axially thereof is a shank 2. The shank 2 is provided at its lower extremity with a head 3 adapted to overlie the inner end of the body 1 and is provided with an annular flange 4 adapted to surround the inner periphery of the body in order to maintain such extremity of the body 1 substantially non-compressible and to afford a medium whereby the shank is anchored to the body 1.
The shank 2 is of a length to dproject above the upper extremity of the b0 y 1 and such projected portion is threaded and adapted to be engaged within the threaded socket 5 produced in the shank of the key 6, said shank intermediate its length being provided with an annular shoulder 7 se ental 1n cross section and which is adapte to engage a compressible disk 8 formed preferably of rubber which is adapted to overlie the upper end of the body 1.
It will be understood that the shank 2 is loosely disposed through the body 1 and through the disk 8 and it will be readily perceived that upon moving the key 6 inwardly upon the shank 2, the body 1 together with the disk 8 will be expanded transversely under the strain of the longitudinal compression and thus assure a substantially hermetic engagement with the container to which the stopper may be applied.
ll find it of particular advantage to employ the disk 8 as the same can be readily replaced when unduly worn or mutilated under the influence of the annular shoulder 7, as is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which by invention appertains.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a bottle stopper constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
2 A stopper of the character described comprising a cork body, a shank loosely disposed axially therethrough and projecting beyond an end thereof,a head integrally produced with the shank and overlying the opposite end of the bod and provided with an annular flange over ying the periphery of the body and serving as a medium'to anchor said shank to the body, a rubber disk Patented July 13, 1915.
