UNITED STATES LELAND B. WHIPPLE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
CUTTER GUARD.
Application filed July 11, 1923. Serial No. 650,824.
My invention is an improved cutter gnard for use in protecting operatives from m ury by the knives of jointers or planing machines, and the leading object of my lnvention is to provide means for automatically moving the guard over knives under normal conditions but which may be readily disengaged so that the guard is free to turn on its pivot away from the cutter to permit ready access to the knives and table top.
My invention is preferably embodied n a machine having a guard j ournalled relative- 1y thereto upon a vertical axis, the guard being normally drawn over the knife cyl1n der by spring mechanism having one end anchored and the other end latched to permit quick engagement and disengagement thereof.
The characteristic features and advantages of my improvements will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawmgs of a preferred embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a machine having my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 83 of F1g. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view illustratlng the connection with the guard of its operating means; and Fig. 5 is a further fragmentary view transverse to the view shown in Fig. 4.
As illustrated in the drawings, a bed 1 has adjustable tables 2 fixed thereto on opposite sides of the recess 3 in which is mounted a knife cylinder 4 rotated by the motor 5. A work guide 6 is adjustably supported along one side of the tables.
A One of the tables 2 has a hanger 7 depending from a corner thereof and forming a bearing for a bolt 8 on which is journalled a bent arm 9 having a vertically inclined section 9 which supports a transverse extension 10 forming a guard over the cylinder 4. The guard is provided with an inclined member 11 which is adapted to be engaged by work advancing over the table to deflect the guard laterally and expose a sufiicient portion of the knives to cut or plane the work.
' The arm 9' is normally drawn toward the machine by mechanism comprising a bolt spring 16, sleeved on the bolt within the table, bears against a washer or bearing 17 sleeved on the bolt and having a hemispherical face engaging the side web of the table adjacent to the slot 13. The tension of the coiled spring may be adjusted by means of the lock nuts 18 on the bolt.
Under normal conditions, the. outer end of the bolt is engaged in the socket 14 and the spring 16 is placed under such tension, by adjustment of the nuts, as will draw the guard over the knives and against the guide 6, but permit the deflection thereof by the engagement of work with the member 11. Vhen it is desired to swing the guard back out of the way, the spring mechanism may be readily unlatched therefrom by lifting the knob 15 and bolt 12 clear of the walls of the socket 14. The spring mechanism and arm are latched together by seating the bolt in the socket when the guard is again brought into use. p
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A machine of the character described comprising a table having a slotted web, a guard journalled relatively to said table and having a socket therein, a bolt having an end detachably engaged in said socket and a shank projecting through said slot, and a spring connected with said bolt and turning said guard about its axis.
2. A machine of the character described comprising a table having an apertured member, a guard journalled on said table below the top thereof and having an open socket, a bolt engaged. in said socket and having a head forming a knob and a shank projecting through said aperture a coiled spring sleeved on said bolt and bearing against said ape-rtured member and means on said bolt engaging the opposite end of said spring.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this 2nd day of July, 1923. V
