ensa,
To all whom may 0mm.-
Be it known that I, CARLHUBE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San l ranciscoandState of Californiaphave invented anew and useful Improvement in Safety-Guards for Rotary Sticker Heads, of which the following isafull, clear, and exact description, such as willenable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same,
My inventionrelates to improvements in safety guards forjrotary sticker heads wherein an adjustable chip breaker oper Specification of Letters Patent.
ates to guard that side and top of thecutter head adjacent the operator and alsoto retain uncut portions of lumber, passing 1 through thesticker, firmly upon the table of. the machine. p a
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved, simple and effective guard for rotary stlckerheads and the like; thatmay be easily and simply adjusted to guard an operator from in ury and to retain the lumber being cut. i
A still further object 's toprovide an improved chip breaker and guard of the character described which maybe adjusted toform a guide for lumber being cut.
A still further object of the inventionis to provide a guard adjustable to cutter heads of various diameters. at 1 ,I accomplish these several objects by means of the device disclosed inthe draw:
ings forming a partofthe present specification wherein like characters of reference are usedto designate similarjparts throughout the said specification and drawings, and y in which- Figure 1 is aplan view of aportionbf a sticker table, disclosing the cutter head and the guardattached thereto; Fig.2 lsa frontelevation of Fig. l with the tableshowninsection; M Fig.3 is aleft hand elevation of Fig. 2 with the table portion shownin section; and Fig. 4 is a left hand elevationof Fig. 3 with the upper portion of the cutter head and thecutting blades removed, 1
Referring to thedrawings the numeral 1 is used to designate atable of'a stickerma chine and 2 the cutterhead'rotated by a shaft 3 and carrying cutter blades 4:. a
An arm 6 is pivotally mounted upon the table l ias at Tand is provided with an ar cuatefslotted ezgtension 8 through] which on said arcuate portion 22 in a passes a securing bolt able thumb nut 11.-

9engaged by a suit-1 arr rise.
The arm 6 is movedupon its pivotlto ad-f just the same relatively tothe cutter head p and when properly adjusted is securel held in position by tightening the thum nut 11 on the bolt 9. a p I p p The arm 6 terminatesin an arcuate portion l2having a vertically disposed extension 14: to serve as a chip breaker. n
The BXtGDSlOll 14 is providedwith a verticallydisposed groove 16 within whichis ld slidably mounted a bolt 17 provided with a thumb nut 18. j I j An effect flexible or spring member 21 is provided with an arcuate extension 22, having an arcuate slot 23therein, arranged to extend over the cutterfbla des 4 and adja cen t the cutter head 2, which 1161a said blades 4:, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the draw ings. The opposite end of the member21 is provided with a horizontally fslotted yer:
tical extensional which is engaged bvl the bolt 17 and [the thumh ut 18 thereforfjto rigidly secure the said memberQlQin post tion. a j k In order to prevent themember ,21 from rotating about the bolt 17 a seriesof lugs 26am formed integral with the vertical extension 14 and parallel withthe groove 16 therein one of which lugs 26 restsiunderthe end of the flexible member 21to]prevent the arcuate end22 thereof from being raised when an upward pressure is broughtto bear manner hereinafter more fully set forth. pp p a a p A p bolt 27, provid d gwith a thumb 28, passes throughthe arcuate slot 23 in the arcuate portion 22 of the flexible member 21, j and also through a slot 31 in a short plate a or lug 32 which carries anarcuate block 33 having its under surface curved upwardly nearthe ends thereof. p 1 3 By referring to Fig.1 it will be observed that by means of this arrangement tliejar cuateblock 33 may be adjusted radizilly and circumferentially relatively to the cutter head 2. a s
Thej operationisas follower a i o By loosening the thumb nut 11;- onthebolt 9 the arm 6 may be adjusted to :bring the 1 edge of, the vertical extension14cadjacent to the circular path describedby the rota tion of thecutter blades l so that said edge willserve as: a chip breaker.
ment is disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings and operates to accommodate cutter heads of various diameter within the range of the machine.
The flexible ofl'set member 21 is adjusted by loosening the thumb nut 18 and bolt 17 and moving the said member 21 vertically with its end resting on the proper lug 26, until the arcuate end 22 of the member 21 rests at a proper height which will bring the lower surface of the 'arcuate block 33 a distance above the table 1 slightly less than the thickness of the lumber to be cut.
The lower surface of the block 33 will then be slightly lower than the upper edges or tops of the cutter blades 4: as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The chip breaker. edge of the vertical extension l l 'ofthe arm '6 is adjusted in a longitudinal-line, relatively to the table 1 and the direction to be taken by the lumher to be cut, so that said edge will serve as a guide when inserting said lumber. The stick of lumber is indicated in dotted lines in Fig, 1 of the drawings.
As the arcuate block is adjusted so as to leave a space between its lower surface and the surface of the table 1 slightly less'than the thickness of the lumber to be cut it is evident that as the said lumber is inserted under the curved lower end of said block 33 an'upwa'rd pressure will be exerted on the arcuate portion 22 of the flexible member 21 which pressure would tend to rotate the said member 21 about the pivot as represented by bolt 16 in the vertical extension 14: of the arm 6.
I But, such rotation is prevented by the end ofth'e lu'g 26 which rests under the end 21 of the said flexible member, and the resulting upward pressure places the flexible member121 under a tension, the reaction of said tension operating to hold the lumber being cut firmly onto the table 1.
It "is obvious from "the foregoingthat I have provided 'an improved guard for sticker cutter heads that will effectively guard the operator from injury to hands while passing 'lumberfthrough the machine as the arcuate block 33 and arcuate portion 22 0f the flexible member 21 effectively coverandscreen the revolving knives or blades 4.
Itis also evident that the device may be adjusted to various positions to suitably accommodate the thickness of lumber being cut and also various diameters of cutter heads.
Having thus described my invention what I claim .as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-' 1. A safety guard for rotary cutter heads of sticker machines comprising an arm pi-votally mounteda'djacent the head and terminati'ngin an arcuate chip breaker; an adjustable flexible member securedto the chip breaker and arranged to extend over the rotating head; and means adjustably mounted on the flexible member to engage and retain on the sticker table, lumber being operated upon by the rotary cutter.
V 2. A safety guard for rotary cutter heads of sticker machines comprising an arm pivotally mounted on the table of the machine and terminating in an arcuate upright extension adjacent the cutter head to form a chip breaker, said chip breaker having a vertically disposed groove in the side thereof adjacent the cutter head; an arcuate oil set member slidably mounted within the groove and extending over the rotating blades of the cutter head at one side of said head; an arcuate block adjustably mounted upon the extension to engage and retain the uncut portion of lumber being operated upon by the cutter head.
