"UNITED STAT-Es P T E N T 'OF-2F I C GEORGE El. LOGAN, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO EDV/'ARD A. HORIGAN AND ONE-FOURTH TO EDWARD L. HORIGAN, BOTH OF PITTS- BURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application led December 26, 1922.
Yhe i tory movements between the .iter-ent members, thereby producing discord ly the present invention, there is provided an improved shell, preferably cennln'ising a' single casting by means ct eh the tones ot' the drum are greatly improved.
This invention also has :tor an object the provision et improved means for tightening the heads, whereby all of the tightening members are maintained in axial alignment.
In the accompanying drawings there are shown t'or purposes of illustration only certain embodiments of this invention, it being understood that the drawings do not detine the limits of the invention as changes may4 he made in the construction without depart- .ing 'troni the spirit and scope ot my broader claims.
In the drawings:
Fi ure l is a perspective view of a drum constructed in accordance with the present invention q j 2 is a sectional view on an enlarg-cl scale through the shell; and
Figure is a view corresponding gener- 'ally to Figure 2, but illustrating a modified torni of construction.
ln carrying out the present invention` there provided a shell 2, preferably in the form ot a single casting ot aluminum hav` ing inte-gral reinforcing bands 3. As is customary in this art, these bands are preferablv,7 located adjacent the edges and the central portion of the shell.
The heads 4 may be secured to the drum in the usual manner by securing the edges to hoops 5 and tastening the hoops over the ends ot the shell 2. Rings 6 are then placed in engagement with the hoops and tightening screws 4' are inserted through the open` ings in the lugs S on the rings.
It is desirable in order to prevent any torsion er binding of the tightening screws DRUM.
Serial No. 609,154.
7 to provide a construction wherein they are nniintz-xined in true axial alignmentv during the tightening of the heads and the use ot the drum. This is accomplished in accordance with'the present invention by theuse ot sleeves i), adapted to receive the tightening screws.
in the torni ot' the invention illustrated in Figure i?, the sleeves 9 are adjustably carrie en the. threaded outer extremity ot pos l), which posts are rigidly secured to an )reject outwardly from the shell. By thrczuling the sleeves inwardly or outwardly on the post 10, it is possible to so position the saine that the tightening screws 7 may enter the sleeves without any binding action. 'ihe tightening screws may then be drawn up in the usual manner.
In Figure 3, there is illustrated a slightly niodiied einl'iodilnent of the invention, in which the sleeves 9 are formed integrally with the posts l0. The posts, in turn, have projecting inwardly therefrom threaded eX- tensions ll, which are threaded in suitable openings in the central reinforcing band 3.
lVith both oit the forms ot' the invention illustrated, it will be apparent that means are provided for producing relative adjustment between the shell and the sleeves and for holding the sleeves in adjusted positions. It has been found that it is impossible to obtain these results by utilizing a construction in which a free sliding movement is pern'iitted between the sleeves and the posts.
It will be apparent that7 due to the onepiece construction of the shell, the resonant qualities thereof are greatly improved, thereby insuring better' results. Other advantages arise from the improved form of tightening means, in which the rings are always drawn in a true axial direction and the tightening screws are maintained in axial alignment.
l claim:
l. In a drum, a shell comprising a casting having integral reinforcing bands adjacent its upper and lower edges, substantially as described.
f2. In a drum, an aluminum shell comprising a casting having integral reinforcing bands adjacent its upper and lower edges and its center, substantially as described.
3. ln a drum, a shell, a plurality of posts projecting outwardly therefrom, tightening i ts sleeves carried by each of said posts, and means for producing positive adjustment between the shell and sleeves and for holding the sleeves in adjusted positions, substantially as described.
4. In a drurn, a shell, a plurality of posts projecting outwardly from said shell, sleeves carried by said posts, a threaded add justinent intermediate said sleeves and said shell for adjusting the sleeves inwardly or outwardly with. respect to the shell, and tightening screws cooperating with said sleeves, substantially as described.
5. In a drum, a one-piece shell having an integral Central reinforcing band, and integral reinforcing bands adjacent its upper and lower edges, a plurality of posts projecting outwardly through said Shell and having fastening means cooperating with said central band, sleeves carried by said posts and adjustable with respect to said shell, and tightening screws cooperating` with said sleeves, substantially as described.
6. In a drum, a one-piece shell having an integral central reinforcing band, a plurality of postsprojecting outwardly through said shell and having fastening ineans cooperating with said band, sleeves carried by said posts and adjustable with respect to said shell, and tightening screws cooperating with said sleeves, substantially as described.
Y 7. In a drinn, a cylindrical shell of cast metal having relatively thin side walls with integral bands of relatively greater thickness extending thereabout at the edges thereof, substantially as described.
,ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE H. LOGAN.
