Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. PAYNE, OF ADAMS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HUBS FOR VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,974, dated January 19, 1875; application filed J annary 2, 1875.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. PAYNE, of Adams, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hub Boxes and Bands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.-
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal section of my hub box and band. My invention has relation to hubs for wheels; and it consists in constructing the hub-box and the inside band in one piece, and confining the same in place by means of spurs on said band, and a screw-cap on the outer end of the box, as will be fully understood from the following description. My objects are to prevent a hub from splitting, and also to prevent the hub-box from becoming loose.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the wooden portion of my improved hub, the ends of which are beveled, as shown in Fig. 1. B designates the hub-box, on the inner end of which a band, B, is formed, which band has formed on it an annular flange, a, the side of g which is beveled, so as to hug the inner beveled portion of the hub A. Between the beveled flangea and the box B spurs b are formed on the web of the band B, which spurs enter the inner end of the hub A, when the band and box are drawn home, and prevent these parts from becoming loose. G designates a band or cap, which is constructed with a beveled flange, 0, adapted to fit snugly on the outer beveled end of the hub A. This band C is screw-threaded, and serves as a means for tightly drawing the hub-box and the band B in their places, and holding them there.
Edesignates an axle-skein, which is received into the box B, and provided with a nut, D, on its outer end; also with a flange, g, which is received into an annular recess made in the band B, as shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The band B, formed on the box B, and having a beveled flange, a, and spurs b, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the cap-band G, having beveled flange c, with the band B and hub-box B, the band having beveled flange a, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY A. PAYNE.
