IMPROVEMENT IN METHCDS OF LUBRICATING CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,960, dated January 19, 1875; application led December 10, 1874.
To all whom -it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOE V. MEIGS, of Lo well, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CartridgeLubricators, of which the following is a specification:
It is the object of my invention to lubricate cartridges, and to remove the surplus grease therefrom. The improvements claimed will hereinafter be set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows a vertical longitudinal central section through an apparatus for carrying out my invention, A is a furnace or heating-chamber, in which a fire may be made; or it maybe provided with a gas pipe or pipes, I, having jets or burners B B, a cock, D, and a gas-supply tube, E. A vat or tank, C, contains the lubricant or grease, which is melted by the heat from the furnace. An incline, H, heated by the furnace, leads from the edge of the Vat to one end or side of the furnace. Air to support combustion may be admitted to the furnace through openings in its side, and the smoke and surplus heat may escape from a suitable smoke-pipe. The cartridges to be lubricated are placed in suitable frames or holders, in this instance composed of perforated plates Gr, with handles F. The cartridges are retained in the holes in the plates by their anges, or by friction against the sides of the shells. I claim as my invention- The method herein described of lubricating cartridges, and removing the surplus grease therefrom, which consists in dipping the cartridges in the heated lubricant, drying them, and placing them in contact with a heated surface, substantially as set forth.
