E. KITTELSEN BALANCE RUDDER Filed Oct. s, 1924 Patented June 15, 1926.

BALANCE RUDDER.
Application led October 8, 1924. Serial No. 742,432.
This invention relates to an improved balance rudder for ships, and its object is to arrange the rudder slidably on its shaft and to so connect it with the latter in a movable manner that in any positions of the rudder torques are practically avoided. The rudder or the rudder blades are displaced at the rotation of the rudder shaft corresponding to the travel of the pressure centre.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, a preferred form of construction of the subject matter of the invention: Fig. l being a sectional side view of a rudder on ships stern, while Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rudder, partly in section on the line A-B of Fig. l, in its zero position, and Fig. 3 a similar plan view of the rudder in a laid-on position.
A two-blade rudder a is slidably mounted on its shaft b by means of velongated slots g, g in its middle supports f, f carrying the blades of the rudder a by means of stays f The rudder shaft b is mounted in a ships bracket ,7L and can be set in rotation from the ship-in a way known in the art. Said shaft b carries fixed levers c, c in pivotal connection with arms (l, d fulcrumed on fixed bolts e, e of said supports f, f
and .having a common connection-link d that is positively guided in a slotted extension h of the ships bracket h. Said levers c, c and arms d, d serve thus as carriers of the rudder a which is guided by the supports f, f on the shaft b and by the connection-link d in the extension h.
For laying-on the rudder a, for instance to the position shown in Fig. 3, the shaft b is rotated in the direction of arrow l. At the same time, owing to the positively guided pivotal lever system c, cf and d, d', CZ, the rudder a is displaced on its shaft b along the slot-s g, g in its supports f, f in the direction of arrow 2, in such a way that, if desired by an additional insertion 'of resilient means, the resultant from the current pressure remains without a noxious vrotary action on the shaft o.
Y That I claim, is:
1. In combination, a rudder lshaft, a balance rudder slidably lmounted onsaid shaft, and a pivotal lever system connecting said rudder and shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination, a rudder shaft, a balance rudder slidably mounted on said shaft, and a positively guided pivotal lever system connecting said rudder and shaft, substantially as and for f the purpose set fort-h.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ERLING KITTELSEN.
