Description
' R. s. EMMET June 15 1926.
ANDIRON Filed April 15. 1926 Patented June 15, 1926.
UNITED STATES RICHARD S. EIVIME-T, OF SCI-IENECTADY, NEW YORK.
annmon. r 'g Application filed April 15, 1926. Serial No. 102,297.
The present invention relates to andirons, and especially to andirons of relatively small size such as are used in connection with domestic fireplaces, although it is not limited necessarily thereto.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved andiron which while being attractive in appearance, at the same time is very simple in structure and capable of being manufactured at low cost.
i A further object of my invention is to provide an andiron of a contour such that a number of them may be nested when they are packed for shipment whereby when packed for shipment, they provide a small compact package.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved andiron, the forward end of which supports the log or logs to be burned close to the floor of the fireplace whereby a small fire may be kept burning, it being possible with my improved andiron to maintain a fire with a single log.
For a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following specification and the claims appended thereto.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a view of a fire place with an andiron therein embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective'vicw of the andiron, and Fig. 8 is a side View thereof, showing also how several andirons may be nested for shipment.
According to my invention, I construct an andiron from a single piece or bar of suitable material such as wrought iron, which can be bent readily to the desired shape and which can be given a pleasing and attractive finish. The bar is bent to provide two downwardly depending feet 5 at the rear end of the andiron, two substantially parallel forwardly extending downwardly sloping legs 6 which terminate in knees 7 at the front of the andironadapted to rest directly on the floor of a fireplace, and a front portion comprising two vertical or substantially vertical arms 8 connected by a cross bar 9. Feet 5 are of a length such that legs 6 slope downwardly from the rear of the andiron to the front of the andiron at an angle suflicient to cause a log on the andiron to tend to roll forward by gravity and lie against vertical arms 8. Here it is comparatively close to the floor of the fireplace so that it will burn readily due to the draft Which will circulate under it and the fact that it will be in contact with the coals lying on the floor of the fireplace beneath it even though there be but a small amount of them. This advantageous feature of my in Q0 vention results from the fact that no feet are provided at the forward end of the andiron, the height of the andiron at its forward end being determined by the thickness of the bar from which the iron is formed. The particular arrangement thus has a functional advantage in that it enables a small fire to be kept in a fireplace and also a mechanical advantage in that it enables the andiron to be bent up out of a single piece of material which means that it can be manufactured at a low cost.
While my improved andiron is simple in structure and very easily manufactured at low cost, at the same time it is attractive in appearance and functions for its intended purpose in a most satisfactory manner.
In the present instance I have shown the andiron as being made from a bar rectangular in cross section. However, this is only by way of example for bars of other section may be used if "found desirable.
In Fig. 1, 10 indicates a fireplace, 11 being the floor of the fireplace. From an inspection of this figure, it will be seen that a log, such as that indicated at 12, lying on the andiron rests close to floor 11 so that it will burn advantageously.
YVhen andirons embodying my invention are to be packaged for shipment, they can be nested one within another, the legs 6 of one andiron resting directly on the legs 6 of another as is indicated in Fig. 3. This ability of the andirons to be nested thus is most advantageous when the andirons are to be packed and shipped.
An andiron embodying my invention can be manufactured by taking a straight bar of material of the desired cross sectional shape and bending it into the required form. This means that it can be manufactured very simply and easily, and I regard this as being one of the important advantages of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. An andiron comprising a single continuous piece of material which provides two legs having depending feet at their rear ends, the forward ends being adapted to rest directly on. a floor, two vertical arms projecting upwardly from the forward ends of said legs, and a cross bar connecting the upper ends of said arms.
2. An andiron comprising a single continuous piece of material. having its central portion bent upwardly to form two vertical arms connected by a, cross bar and its two ends bent at an angle to the Vertical portion to provide two substantially parallel legs the extremities of said legs being turned downwardly to provide depending feet, the lower ends of said 't'eet and the lower ends of Silld arms lying in a common plane, whereby when placed on a floor, said. legs slope downwardly and forwardly.
In Witness whereof I have hereto set my hand this 14 day of April, 1926.
RICHARD S. EMMET.
