WERNER CHRISTIAN LASSEN HAUIBROE, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
MACHINE. GUN WITH EXCHANGEABLE BARREL.
Application filed September 3, 1924, Serial No. 735,546, and in France November 12, 1923.
In machine guns of the kind by which latter must be detachable in order that it 'Inay be replaced by another one, when after having fired a certain number of shots it has been heated so much that it would be damaged, if firing with the gun were continued. In order that the barrel may be exchanged, the trigger plate together with the butt-end are pivoted about a bolt provided on the bottom side of the lock frame, and the rotation may take place, when a bolt inserted in therear top corner of the lock frame is,
removed.
This arrangement involves the drawback that the bolt may easily be lost or thrown away, so that it must be replaced by another one. Besides, the insertion and removal of the bolt require a relatively long time.
The present invention has for its object to avoid the above mentioned drawbacks, and this result is attained by shaping the bolt serving to hold the trigger plate and buttend in the normal position in such a manner that it has to be turned only one half revolution in order to release the swinging parts, and only one half revolution in the opposite direction in order to lock the swinging parts in the normal position.
. On the drawing- Fig. 1 shows, in side elevation, a portion of a machine gun in the normal position,
Fig. 2 the same, similarly in side elevation, with the trigger plate and the butt-end swung downward,
Figs. 3 and 4 show the rearmost portion of the lock frame with the releasing bolt. in side elevation in the locking position and in vertical longitudinal section in the released position, respectively.
Fig. 5 the lock frame with the releasing bolt seen from behind, and
Fig. 6 the releasing bolt seen from behind.
. 1 is the trigger plate, 2 the butt-end and 3 the lock frame together with the bolt 4 about which the trigger plate and the buttend may be swung, see Figs. 1 and 2. 5 is a bolt which is seated in a hole 6 provided i in the upper rear corner of the lock frame 3, and which is fitted with a head 8, and to the latter a crank 7 is attached. Inthe head a slot 9 is provided, Figs. 3, 5 and 6, which is engaged by a pin 10 on the rear end of a bolt 12 actuated by helical spring 11, the said pin preventing the bolt 5 from sliding longitudinally in the hole 6. The bolt 12 and the helical' spring 11 are housed in a casing 13 on the side of the lock frame 3.
On the portion of its length corresponding to the width of an upwardly directed arm 14 on the trigger plate 1, the bolt 5 is truncated so as to provide a flat face 15. In the upper end of the arm 14 a semi-cylins drical recess 16, Fig. 4, is provided, which has the same radius as the bore 6 and is concentric with the latter. when the trigger plate is in its normal position.
WVhen the bolt 5 with the crank 7 stands in the position shown in Fig. 3, the trigger plate will be locked in the normal position, as the bolt 5 will then enter into the recess 16. On the contrary, when the bolt 5 with the crank 7 is swung into the position shown in Fig. 4, then the face 15 of the bolt 5 will be opposite the recess 16 in the trigger plate, and the latter may then be swung downward together with the butt-end as shown in Fig. 2.
Removal of the barrel in use on the gun and insertion of a new one may then be effected without difficulty, and the entire exchanging operation including release of the trigger plate and locking the same after the exchange may be performed by a skilled person in very few seconds, so that the period in which firing is discontinued is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a machine gun, the combination of a trigger plate, a lock frame pivotally secured to said trigger plate, a removable barrel carried by the trigger plate, a rotatable lock bolt mounted in the lock frame, the trigger plate being provided with a semicircular opening adapted to engage said bolt thereby to retain the trigger plate against swinging on its pivot, said bolt being truncated whereby upon rotation of the bolt for half a revolution the trigger plate i released therefrom, a head carried by said lock bolt and provided with a slot, and. a spring-actuated bolt carried by said lock frame and adapted to enter said slot and prevent longitudinal displacement of the lock bolt.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WERNER CHRISTIAN LASSEN HAUBROE.
