This invention relates to certain improve ments in nursing nipples; and the nature and objects of the invention will be readily recognized and ruiderstood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation and detailed description of the ac companying drawings illustrating what I at present consider to be the preterrcd embodiments or mechanical expressions of the invention from among various other forms, arrangements, combinations and constructions ol which the invention is capable within the spirit and scope thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a nipple for nursing bottles which isformed to overcome the tendency of such nipples to collapse in use due to the creation of a partial vacuum therewithin, and which is further designed to present a more natural shape and provide a flow of food there-from in such quantities and at such a rate as to more elliciently feed an infant using the same under the varying conditions to which such nipples are subjected in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nursing nipple embodying the foregoing characteristics and securing the above results, which nipple is so designed and constructed as to be readily cleaned and maintained in the desired sanitary condition essential in the use of nursing nipples.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nursing nipple of simple construction capable of manufacture at small cost andwhich will be durable in use and efficient in operation.
With the foregoing main objects and certain other objects and results in view, which 0 objects and results will be readily recognized by those'skilled in the art, the invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combination and arrangement of elements, as will be more fully and particularly referred to and specified hereinafter.

In the example of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described herewith, a nipple of the type adapted for use with the so-called large mouth or sanitary type of nursing bottle is disclosed. However, the invention is not limited to such type of nipple or to use on such type of nursing bottle but the principles and features of the invention are adapted and applicable to embodiment in any and all types of nursing nipples, as will be readily apparent'to those familiar with this art.
According to the form of the invention presented herewith, a nipple 10, formed of rubber or any other material suitable for the purpose, of the type for use on and with a large mouth nursing bottle, is constructed with and embodies the various features of the invention. The nipple 10 includes the large body portion which is given an approximately natural shape and contour, and terminates at the open side or end in the usual or any other desired construction of attaching skirt or flange 11, which is fitted over and around the open end of a nursing bottle and maintains the nipple 10 in the desired mounted position thereon. In Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, the month .end of a nursing bottle B is shown with the nipple 10 in mounted position thereon.
The nipple 10 terminates at the outer or discharge end in the discharge neck 12 in communication with the interior of the nipple body, and the discharge head 14 in communication with the neck 12. In the present example the discharge neck 12 is of smaller diameter than the head 14 and forms a constricted passage between the body of the nipple and the discharge head, as will be clear by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings in particular.
A relatively hard rubber stem 15 is formed extending from the inner side of head 14-, inwardly through the discharge neck 12 and a distance into the space within the body of the nipple. (See Fig. 3.) This stem 15 is of smaller diameter than the i (it) Oil eck l2 and is thus specad from the walls thereof. Discharge passages or grooves 1'? are formed at opposite sides and extending longitudinally of the stem 15 and terminate spaced a distance from the inner end thereoi within the body of nipple 10. The outer ends l? of the discharge passages 16 extend through the top wall of head l t and are inclined r through in opposite directions to terminate in the open discharge ports 18 in the nipple head 14;. Thus, with the nipple in mounted position on bottle B, the liquid contents oi": the bottle are discharged from the bottle and nipple through necl: 1.2, head 14-, and the discharge passages l6 l7 and head discharge ports 18.
Tue relat'vely hard rubber stem 15 provides a substantially still and relatively rigid structure which will efiectually prevent the tendency of the nipple to collapse in use, due to the formation of a partial vacuum therein by a child pressing the sides of the neck or head of the nipple together and sucking or drawing air therefrom, as will be understood by those familiar with the use of nursing nipples.
in operation and use of a nipple 10, the multiple discharge passages l6-17 and separate discharge ports 18 thereof, food is more elliciently and naturally fed theret-hrough at a rate of flow and in quantities sufficient to properly feed a child with a minimum of eliort and the reduction of the exhausting effect on a child in exerting itself to draw the proper quantity ol' food from the bottle and nipple. In; child will still be enabled to secure food from the other passage and port, so that the possibility of a nipple becoming totally inoperative in use is substantially reduced. The formation and construction of the nipple 10 is such that the interior surfaces of the nipple are readily accessible so that thorough cleaning and sterilization is easily and quickly accomplished, while the nipple can be manufactured at low cost, due to this construction and arrangement.
It is also evident that various changes, modifications, variations and substitutions might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not ish to limit the invention to the exact and specific disclosures hereof.
Desiring to pr? s t my invention in the curved outwardly therebroadest manner legally possible, what I claim is:
1. A nursing nipple formed with an axial interior stem depending a distance in the nipple from the discharge end thereof, spaced discharge ports through the end of the nipple, and separate teed channels formed longitudinally of said stem in communication with said discharge ports, respectively.
A nursing nipple formed of rubber and having a relatively stitl stem of rubber depending from the discharge end. of the nipple on the interior thereof, discharge ports at opposite sides oi the stern through the discharge end of the nipple, and opposite discharge channels extending longitudinally in and open along opposite sides of said stem and communicating with said spaced discharge ports, respectively.
A nursing nipple embodying, a nipple body terminating in a discharge neck and a discharge head, the said neck forming a constricted passage between the body and the head, and a relatively hard material stem extending from the inner side of said head inwardly through said neck 3.1K, a distance into the nipple body.
4:. A nursing nipple formed with an axial interior stem extending a distance into the nipple from the discharge end thereof, sepa rate feed channels formed in opposite sides and extending longitudinally of said stem and inclined outwardly in opposite directions at the discharge end or said nipple, and the nipple formed at the discharge end with spaced discharge ports in communication with the outwardly inclined ends of said channels, respectively.
5. A nursing nipple embodying a nipple body terminating in a discharge neck and discharge head, a stem extending longitudinally of the nipple from the inner side of the discharge head, through the discharge neck and a distance into the nipple body, the discharge head formed with discharge ports therethrough at opposite sides of and spaced from the stem, and said stem formed with separate discharge passages extending longitudinally thereof from points spaced from the inner end of said stem to and in communication with said spaced (llSCll2ll' !;Q ports, said passages inclined outwardly at their discharge ends to said ports.
