IMPROVEMENT IN IRONING-BOARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,844, dated January 19, 1875; application filed April 25, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, ANTHONY IsKE, of the city of Lancaster, inthe State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements on Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to that class of devices for ironing purposes. The object Vis to combine a clothes-drier with a sliding and revolving ironing-board and cuff-board, made ad'- adjustable to iit any ordinary table, the whole capable of being shut compactly together and secured, so as to occupy the least space possible When not in use.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my improvement, 'with the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l shows the ironing-board, with the parts attached, in perspective, applied to an ordinary kitchen-table ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the same folded together againstl the under side of the board, turned up to exhibit' all the parts in place.

The construction may be briefly stated, to enable any one skilled in the art to make and .use the same.

Between two parallel pieces, B B, united at the ends by cross-pieces K F, slidesa block, H, and a piece or cuff board, C, each provided with a vtongue on the edge to fit into grooves in the inner edges of B, Fig. 3. The pivotbolt h of the ironing-board A is connected to the sliding block H, by which connection it obtains a sliding horizontal as well as a circular motion for its adjustment. A pair of parallel slats, D D, is hinged to the crosspiece F of the parallel pieces B B. Said slats D are combined at their one end by a crosspiece, G. They are also perforated, to receive lthe cross-slats or driers E, shown turned up,

with the driers in place, Fig. l, as also side rods P, drawn out, held by a pivot-bolt, connected with the cross-piece F aforesaid. C shows the sliding cufl'board drawn out, and is inten ded to `answer for ironing sleeves and cuffs, as well as for an adjusting clamp and holder, by means of its projecting end and turning-buttons L, and thumb or binding screw M. (Seen in Fig. 2, which shows the driers E drawn out of the hinged pair D.) In

order to fold these, so as to come under the ironing-board, it is necessary to slide the board forward to its utmost limits, when the united slats D will turn down between the pieces B and outer driers rP on their hinges, and allow the ironing-board to be slid over them. Turning the under side up, the drying-slats E are laid upon the pieces B, and held by the turnbutton L and thumb-screw M, connected with the cuff-board G, which latter is slid back any desired distance to hold them in place. Thus folded, when separately made of pieces of one inch in thickness, Will only be thlee inches in thickness collectively. On the under side of the crosspiece F there is a hook-clasp, I, which engages the edge of a table on one side.

.The turn-button L on piece or cuff board G is pushed up against the opposite edge of the table, and so held by the thumb-screw M. There is also a turn-button, f, on the outer edge of the cross-piece F, which is turned down over the cross-piece G, that combines the hinged pieces D, to hold them when in a vertical position.

The operation of this combination is readily understood. The combined arrangement is believed to be both novel and useful.

What I claim, in combination with an ironing-board, is-

l. The combination of the foundation-bars B and the end pieces K and F, the latter having catch I, with the adjustable cuit-board C, having the locking-screwM, the whole being adapted for ready attachment to and removal from any ordinary'table, substantially as described.

2. In combination with the bars B B, the board A, adapted to slide longitudinally, and

`also to revolve upon its pivot h, asdescribed.

3. In combination with the foundation-bars B B, the turning-slats D D, perforated for the reception of rods E, and hinged to the said bars B, together'with side driers P on pivots in the cross-piece F, the Whole constructed and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth. v
