BASEBALL GLOVE.
Application filed August 1, 1924. Serial No.172 9,530.
This invention relates to an improved of the blank of material utilized to form,
base ball glove and while it has more particular reference to the type-of glove to be used by infielders and outfielders, it is not to be restricted to this particular use since the invention is adaptable for incorporation in mitts of the kind used both by catchers and first basemen.
The invention relies more particularly for its novelty on the specific construction.
of the thumb of the glove. Heretofore, so far as I know, all base ball gloves have a seam which encircles the base of the thumb at its point of juncture with the main or This seam is particularly objectionable, especially on the face of the glove owing to the shearing action to which the threads are subjected bythe constant pounding of the ball in the glove. Also, this front portion of the seam is subject to abrasion and the life of the marketed types of gloves is thus impaired to a very noticeable extent.
What I aim to do is to provide a glove I which does not have a seam extending from the base of the index finger to the base of the thumb and across the front of the glove. I have therefore conceived of and evolved a glove provided with a thumb wherein the objectionable seam is entirely eliminated, both on the front and rear sides of the thumb. Thus, I have produced a very novel glove which is very strong and durable, one which conforms more accurately to the shape of the players hand, and one wherein the players ability will be aided by the tendency of the ball to stick in the glove.
More specifically, I have devised a new form of base ball glove wherein a single piece of material serves to form the facing for the fingers and thumb and also the backing for the little finger, the backing pieces for the remaining fingers and thumb being of separate pieces of material.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawing. 7
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a base ball glove constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2'is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an elevation of top plan view the facing for the glove.
Figure 4 is a detail View ofthe backing piece for the improved thumb.
As before intimated, the glove is primarily composed of a facing formed from a single blank 1 of suitable material such as leather, chamois skin or the like. This blank is so shaped as to practically form thecomplete covering for the little finger. The backing pieces for the indexand intermediate fingers designated by the reference character 2 are substantially of conventional design. The backing piece 3 for the improved thumb structure is new. As is usual, when the several pieces of material I are properly stitched together, the glove is padded and the padding is retained in place by suitable lacing 4, the thumb and index finger being connected together in the usual way by a strap 5. v
Referring again to the blank 1, it will be seen that the same is cut as to provide facing for the index finger .6, middle finger 7 third finger 8, little finger 9 and thumb 10. Particular emphasis is to be given the inclusion in this blank of the port-ion utilized to form the facing for the thumb. The blank also includes a wing 11 for forming the rear side of the little finger and an extension 12 to which the usual strap 13 is connected. It is also to be pointed out that the blank is provided with a pointed or V-shaped tongue 14 between the index finger and the thumb.
It is obvious that when the glove is completed by stitching the several parts together, the seam 15 at the bottom and rear side of the index finger (see Fig. 2) and the adjacent end of the seam 16 of the thumb are disposed in diverging relation with the apex disposed at the margin of the opening 17 in the back of the glove. The seam 16 then extends up and over the end of the thumb and then down along the side as indicated at 17 (see Fig. 1) after which it takes a turn and extends across the rear side serve to permit the parts to, be properly parent, I do not deem it necessary to enter a more lengthy description.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is I 1 In a base ball glove, a trank of a single piece of material for forming the front of the palm, fingers and thumb including a body having finger, thumb and tab portions, there being one thumb portion, one tab portion, and a plurality offinger portions projecting from the body, the thumb portion extending at an acute angle to the index finger portion, the tab portion being V-shaped and extending to bisect the angle between the thumb and index finger portions, n Y
In testnnony whereof I affix my s1gnature. V
JOSEPH KABAT.
