UNITED S ES" PATENT OFFICE} :omr r; noun, or aonrco'n, wrsconsm.
' monmo noun.
3, I Application llled l y This invention relates to improvements in ironingboards', 'and";more particularly to ironing boards :which may be folded when notinuse I v I It is the principal object of the present invention to provide an ironing board which may be easily folded to a closed posit on in a very simple manner so as to occupy-"but a minimum amount of space when not 1n use. A further ob'ect of the invention is to provide afolda le ironing board having ,a

simple and effective means for locking the legs when the board is in elther open. or folded position. j 4
A further object of the invention is to provide a foldable ironing board which forms a very rigid and steady support when the legs are locked in oplen position. s ;A further ob'ect' of-gt e invention is' to le flironing board which is of very-"sim le construction, is strong and d islwell]: adapted for the pur-;
With th 7 above 7 other objects in view, helinvention consists ,oithe improved iron- .lngjjboard" and its parts and combinations .iaslset "forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof. a
. In; the; accompanying? :drawing I which the same; reference characters indicate the 'sa'me' parts in all of-the ,VIEWSL.
' the board nearythe front end thereof, and the upper end portions of-a pair of legs 11 are pivotally connected to the outside faces of the bracket by 8 Pl VOt bolt 12.. Said upper end'po'rtions are cut diagonally as indicated by the numeral 11 so that when in open position the will bearflatly against the underside of t aboard and form a. stop tor the outward movement of said legsli legs ll to form a 1923. "'Seria1 in. 088,859.
The legs diverge from each other outwardly from the bracket, and medially of their length are connected together by a brace member 13 and a brace rod 14.
,A third leg 15,diverging fromthe legs 11 when the legs are in open position as shown, has its upper end portion lodged within the U-shaped opening of the br ack etill and is pivotally held therein by 'means of the pivot bolt 12. 'Medially of the length: of-said leg,'- a pair of links 16 are pivotally connected by means of a pivot bolt 8 17 and the other ends of said links arepivotally connected'to a second link member 18, the inner ,end' of which is hingedly secured, as at 19, to the underside of the board 8 near the, tapered end portion 8 thereof.
A about a bolt 21 whichconnects members 16 to member 18, and the other ends of said rods are pivotally secured to a lever or crank r I pair of rods have their inner ends bent 22. Said crank is of bifurcated form and has its end portions extending through the pivotal connection theref with, as at 23.
To unfold'the ironing board, leg 15 first swungaway from the board. Then the legs 11 aremoved away from the board and at the same time, lever or crank 22is moved toward the extremities of legs 11.
movement of the lever or crank will pull onrods '20 which in turn pull link members 16 and 18 until their point of connection 21 is out of alinement with the centers 17 and This 9o "19', as shown, and rod 14 will drop'into a oove 24 provided therefor in member 18 and all of the parts will besecurely locked in"- open position; The reverse operation folds the ironing board and the crank is first moved to shift the point of connection to, theother side of the centers 17 and 19.
The legs. 11 are then folded toward the Y board and the leg 15 is next folded and the links 16 and 18 ivot with res ect to each other to the position shown in the legs are in-fo lded position, the parts will'lie in a plane approximately parallel to the board with the le 15 and links 16 ,folded upon link 18 anda 1 within the space enclosed by legs 1'1. 'A'notched roove 25 provided in member 18're'cives' race rod 14." When so folded, the ironing board may be stored away in a comparatively small space.
the modified formlof the invention ig. 2. When 1 shown Figs. 3 and 4,ithe legs 'll 'and a pair of'shorterlegs" are pivotally connected to a U-bracket 9 by means of a pair of pivot bolts 12. Secured to the underside of the board 8 by means of a hingevv 19 is a crank 22' of elongated lform and said crank is pivotallyv secured mediall of its length, as at 26, to a pair of-links 16 r the other ends of said linksbeing pivotally secured to legs 15, as at 27. When the .legs
are in open position, the lower end of the:
crank will dro into a in a brace 13, t ereby lo open position. A pair of brace rods are also provided and have one pair of ends oove 28 formed 5? thereof formed with eyes through which the 1 pivot bolt 2-7 extends. Saidrods extend' to' the other pair of legs 11 and pass through eye-bolts 28 provided therein and when the lefgs are in open position the bent ends 29 0 sa id rods will bear a ainst said eye bolts en the legs are in ,1
the arts are effectively locked in position.
at I claim as my invention is: g 1. A foldable ironing'board, comprising a board member, legs pivotally'connected to the bottom portion thereof, link means comprising a pair of Hivotally connected members and connecte to one of the legs and to the board member, rods connected to said link means, and a crank member connected with others of said legs and with the rods and limited in movement.
2. A :ioldable ironing board, comprising a board member, legs pivotally connected v to the bottom portion thereof, pivotally connected link members connected to one of the legs and to the board member, a crank member associated with a pair of said legs, and rods connected with said link members at their point of pivotal connection and with said crank member, said crank member ing the parts in en so opened,
being limited in movement and connected to said link means by said rods to lock said legs in open su' porting position.
3. A foldable ironihg board, comprising aboard member having a bracket on its under side, a pair of legs and a single leg pivotally connected to said bracket member,
said si'ngleleg and the pair of legs diverg-.
ing from each other when in open position 5 so tion parallel'to said board, link means .conc and also foldable upon each other to a posinected to said single leg and the board, rods connected to said link means, and a; cranked member pivotally connected to said pair of legsfand to said rodsto iiiove said link means, said cranked member being limited in p v movement. 7 v 4. A foldable ironing-board, comprising a board member, a pair of legs and a third leg pivota-llv connected to the bottom portion thereoi, a link hingdly connected to said board, links ivotally connected to said third leg and said first mentioned link, a cranked member limited in movement and connecting thelpvver. portions of said pair of legs, and connecting rods extending from thepivotal connection ofsaid links to said cranked member.
5. A foldable ironing board, comprising a board member, a pair of legs and a third 'leg pivotally connected to the bottom portion thereof adjacent each other, 'a link hin'gedly connected to said board and having a groove therein, links pivotally connected to said third 1e and said first mentioned' link, a cranke member limited in movement and pivotally mounted in said pair of legs, and connecting rods extending from the pivotal connection of said links with each other to said cranked mem her, said pair of legs having a brace rod insertable in the groove in said first mentioned link to lock said legs in open position when said connecting .rods are moved by said cranked member and the pivotal connection of said links is moved thereby to a position out of alinement.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
JOHN P. DORAU.
