WITNESS V as a rotating shaft of the loom provided generallycreferred .to as follows: The, ro-' Patented June 8, 1926.
1 :UNITED -STATES am r oFFicE.'-* I WILLIAM HARRIS, or rA'rERsoN, NEW masts.
Lenora MEANS son :tooivrs. 7
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of @a loomem bodying the invention, certain parts ing in section; and a 7 Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views on line 2-2, Fig. 1, showing certain-parts in different positions; i I
1 is the loom frame and 2 a going part,
appearwith a crank arm 2 having a stud 2*.
Certain means hereinafter described are tary means to supply the warp X by A; the
flexible attenuated device by B; the pay ing-out means by G; and the means, ten-' sioning a bight in said device B and con-,
trollingmeans C, by D. 'Describing these in detail: i 3
Means A in the present example includes the beam 1, having its shaft or trunnionfi journaled in the loom frame, and asprocketwheel 6 fixed thereon. 1
The device B is in the present case a chain extending in peripheral contact with the under-half of the sprocket-wheel 6 (being engaged with its teeth) as by being slung over suitably journaled idler sprocketwheels '7 in the present case this chain is endless. I
The paying-out means C in the present case comprises the following parts: A combined sprocket-wheel 8 and worm-wheel 9 fixed on a shaft 10 journaledin the frame side, the chain extending over and being engaged with the teeth of the sprocketwheel; a worm 11 fixed on a shaft 12 which extends parallel with the 100m side and forward, having an operating handle or wheel 13 at its forward end, the worm being in mesh with the worm-wheel 9; a ratchetwheel 14: fixed on shaft 12 and a pawl 15 to engage the teeth of the ratchet-wheel and pivotally connected with one arm of a bell crank lever 16 the other arm of which is connected with a crank pin 2 by a chain, wire or other flexible connection 17 which preferably extends up over a pulley 18 (the connection at 2 being a swivel).
The means D includes the following parts: A disk-like sheath 19 revoluble on the in Fig.3. at 19*; a'fixed arm 20 projecting Application filed March 13, 1926'. @se'rial No. 94,445.
pose some of the teeth of the latter as shown between two stop pins'g19 on the sheath; a bell crank lever 21 fulcrumed in the frame to move in a plane parallel with the sheath and connected with the sheath by aspiral spring 22, the upper endof the spring being connected to the lever at a point 22 above the a x is (l2) ofnthe sheath and its lower end to the sheath point 22 below said axis; asprocket-wheel'23 engaged in a bight B of the chain depending between sprocket-wheel 8 andthe near idler sprocket 7; and, a weight carrier'24t hung from the central spindle 23 of the sprocket-wheel and adjustable lengthwise of and on a lever 25 which is fulcrumed in the i frame and has an arm25" engagedlina slot 21 of lever When the loom is running, theparts. being in the positionof Fig. 3, the device B' is pulled by meansA. in thedirection of the arrow in'Fig. 1 and at the same time it is being paid out by means O,.'the pawl 15 of which, kept oscillating constantly from stud 2 is then moving the ratchet wheel 14: step by step and so through 11-9 rotating the sprocket-wheel 8. This, paying-out, by proper designing and timing of the parts, is made faster than the take-up of said device by means A, so that the bight will increase and there will be a corresponding descent of lever 25 and shifting of lever 21 from the position in Fig. '3 to that in Fig. 2 (or clockwise), resulting in the sheath utimately undergoing a sudden rotary (anti-clockwise) shifting sufficiently to clear and hold the pawl '15 disengaged from the ratchet-Wheel, whereupon the paying-out ceases. Taking up of the bight then proceeds, lever 25 con sequently rising and shifting lever 21 in the anti-clockwise direction, resulting in the sheath undergoino a sudden rotary. (clockwise) shifting sucientl to allow the pawl again to engage the rate et-teet-h, wherefore independent rotation; thus I simplify the gearing and eliminate any need for an independent brake, andat the same time I provide a simple means whereby when the loom is stopped the warp can he'slackened, which is accomplished by turning the gear member 11tby means of the hand-wheel 13in the direction to pay-out the device B.
The mentioned sudden movements of the sheath are due to'its spring-toggle connection with lever 21. lVhen this lever shifts in either direction the spring holds the sheath in its initial position until point 22 passes a straight li'ne'connecting 22 and 12, whereupon the spring becomes active to shift the sl1-eathin the'direction relatively op posite to the ensuing movement of the lever. In other words, 19 is an actuated member rotatable back and forth between given limits, 21 an actuating member movable back and forth and so that a part (2%) thereof travels 7 past the axis of member 21 at one side of said axis, and the springis elastic means connecting said part with the actuated member at the opposite side of said axis.
Having thus fully described my, invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v 1; Mechanism to control the letting-off of a warp in a loom including a rotary element urged to rotate in one direction under the pull of the'warp, rotary paying-out means, a flexible attenuated device having a bight betweenand being in tractive engagement with said element and a rotary part of said means and extending from the former oppositely-to its said direction of rotation, and
means to tension the bight, the first-named means including with said par-t another ro ing said part with said actuated member at the opposite side of said axis.
8. In combination, rotary means to supply the warp including arotary element" on which the warp is wound, a flexible attenuated device in tractive engagement with and having a portion thereofYextendingffrom a rotary part of said means relatively reversely to the directionin which the warp extends from said element and formed with a bight, rotary means to pay out said device at a rate to'increase said bight including a retary member and means to advance the same step by step shiftable into and out of; en;
gagement with said: member, means to tension' the bight movable back and forth as the bight varies in extent, and toggle means controlled bythe last-named means and controlling the shifting of the advancing means.
In testimony whereof; I affix: my signature.
